LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 FROM THE VICARAGE Remembered with honour What an amazing weekend we had together as a community for Remembrance. I am so grateful to all who were involved in the planning and the outworking of the exhibition and all the events: Parish Council, History Group, School, Church and our sponsors. It showed the strength of our amazing community and I hope will lead to many more collaborative events in the future. It is very easy to take these things for granted, but I know the huge amount of time, effort and emotional energy that went in to organising these two weeks of commemoration activities which have truly honoured the memory of those from our parish who sacrificed themselves for us all. For me, one of the most poignant sights was the photo of children from Leek Wootton School in 1905 which, almost certainly, would have included some of those who went off to war and never returned. To have eight of the current pupils of our school taking such a key role within our ‘Battle’s Over’ commemoration service and saying “Thank you” so movingly to the absent soldiers, was an absolute privilege to witness and was the moment for many (myself included) when the emotions really kicked in. Anyone who didn’t manage to get one of the souvenir service booklets of the day is welcome to pick one up from the church where they will be available by the display screen at the back. There is no charge for these as the cost of all the printing was covered by one of our sponsors, Broad Lane Leisure. Now, our attention turns to a different time of remembrance as we look back with thanksgiving and gratitude to another type of rescue mission: when God, out of love and compassion for his broken and lost world, came in the form of a helpless and vulnerable baby to meet us in our brokenness and confusion and to guide us along his ways of love, joy, peace and eternal life. This too we easily take for granted, many choosing instead to replace the celebration of the birth of Christ with a time of excess and indulgence. The noble attempt by the supermarket chain ‘Iceland’ to turn the focus instead onto the plight of our fragile world and of the Orang-Utan, is seen as too ‘political’, (if you want to watch it, you can find a link to it on the church website version of Leek Wootton Link, or use www.tiny.cc/ lwiceland) but the politics of greed and commercialism are given free rein on our screens. Let us, instead, as a community, choose to remember with honour the one who came as a child and, when grown, freely sacrificed his life that we might have the chance to experience ‘life, and have it to the full.’ (John 10:10). You can find all the details of our special Christmas services elsewhere – but please take particular note of the change of start time for our Family Carol Service on Sunday 16 December which will start at the earlier time of 3.30pm, despite what you may see on some publicity which was produced before we discovered 3

Each year, the Mary and Joseph figures from our Christmas Crib journey around the village and other local homes en route to the Blessing of the Crib service at 4:00pm on Christmas Eve. If you would like to have them come and visit your home this year, then please contact Jim or Nicola Perryman as soon as possible. The journey begins after our Advent Celebration service at 9.30am on Sunday, 2 December. All we ask is that you treat your guests with respect, take a photo and send it in so that we can build a photo slideshow on the website, and commit to contact the next host to arrange the handover. ‘Host’ our crib figures this year, and have the blessing of sharing in the Christmas story, come to your home. 5

LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 www.coventrycathedral.org.uk COVENTRY CATHEDRAL MATTERS Parish Partner : Mary Robins t : 512643 The recent Cathedral Parish Partners' meeting was held at St. Gabriel's, the newly built Church of England School at Houlton near Rugby. The Vicar from the medieval St Gabriel's in the old village of Houlton seized the challenge of a new town being built over the next 15 years and is investing in families and children. The Diocese sponsored the building of the school with the developers and a service is held every Sunday afternoon in the school’s Community Hall. The good news from the Cathedral is that admission charges have been abolished and there are good clear signs outside the entrance announcing this. There will be an abundance of music over the Christmas period: Thursday, 13 December / 7:30pm – 9:30pm Viennese Christmas by Candlelight. A festive concert featuring work by Strauss, Tchaikovsky and Brahms to be played by the London Concertante Ensemble. www.ticketsource.co.uk/classical Saturday, 15 December / 3:00pm – 4:30pm and 6:00pm - 7.30pm A Christmas Concert in aid of the NSPCC with a ‘carols for all concert’ sung by the Coventry Cathedral Chorus and plenty of audience participation. www.coventrycathedralchorus.com/concerts Monday, 17 December / 6.30pm – 9:00pm Guide Dogs Christmas Wishes Concert to be hosted by Aled Jones. www.guidedogs.org.uk/christmasconcert Sunday, 23 December / 4:00pm – 6:30pm Handel’s Messiah by Candlelight with Coventry Cathedral Chorus. www.coventrycathedralchorus.com/concerts Monday, 31 December / 1:00pm – 3:00pm BFLF: New Year's Eve Family Rave. LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 I recently took the time to read the welcome address printed on the front of one of the Cathedral’s Eucharist Service booklets and I am reproducing it here as I think it is true for every Church: "We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, widowed, straight, gay, confused, well-heeled or down at heel. We especially welcome wailing babies and excited toddlers. We welcome you whether you can sing like Pavarotti or just growl quietly to yourself. You 're welcome here if you are just ‘browsing', just woken up or just got out of prison. We don't care if you're more Christian than the Archbishop of Canterbury, or haven't been to church since Christmas ten years ago. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome keep-fit mums, football dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, junk food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you're having problems, are down in the dumps or don’t like 'organised religion'. (We're not that keen on it either!) We offer welcome to those who think the earth is flat, work too hard, don't work, can't spell, or are here because granny is visiting and wanted to come to the Cathedral. We welcome those who are inked, pierced, both or neither. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down their throat as kids or got lost on the ring road and wound up here by mistake. We welcome pilgrims, tourists, seekers, doubters… and you!" Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, Mary Robins www.mothersunion.org LEEK WOOTTON MU Contact : Janet Jackson t : 258264 25 November -10 December 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE This runs until 10 December and during this time there will be a collection box at All Saints’ Church for items so that we can make up toiletry bags for Coventry Haven Women’s Aid. LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 3–5 December WAVE OF PRAYER Throughout the year prayers are said usually at midday so there is a wave of prayer around the globe for communities worldwide where MU work to support family life, empower women, combat gender inequality and gender based violence and promote participation and representation of women in decision making. This Wave of Prayer is focused for 3–5 December on Coventry Diocese and our Link dioceses: Akot in South Sudan, South West Tanganyika in Tanzania, Aba and Irele-Ese Odo in Nigeria and Cuttack in India. Do join us as we pray for these places. Thank you. News from Sudan Our current ‘families worldwide’ resources magazine reports on one of our links; Sudan where a new future is being built for the women of their province through Mothers’ Union members working in co-operation with their partners. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby paid tribute to members at the inauguration of the Province, describing them as ‘the heart and love of the church’. A hope and a future was brought when women met together from both areas after the split between South Sudan and Sudan as two separate countries. They shared stories and experiences, beginning to understand each other’s contexts and then shared priorities such as appointing Community Development Coordinators; representing the voices of women. NEXT MEETING: Thursday, 13 December, 1:30pm at 69, Beaufort Ave, Leamington CV32 7TD. Our theme will be Christmastime memories, readings and poems: A time of sharing. Prayer: Our Christmas Gift In the crush of buying presents in the crowded stores, look deep into the faces, see the Christ Child there. A gift so freely given, a gift without compare. When you kneel before the manger, when you worship and adore, remember he is yours to cherish, he is yours for evermore. We are waiting for your coming, but you are already here, to share each joyful moment, to wipe away each tear. But we shall still celebrate your arrival here on earth, the moment that the Father chose for you to have your birth. We shall shout the joyous news with our loudest voice, so that everyone may know the reason to rejoice. And we shall tell them of your arrival in that stable bare, of the beginning of a new age that all on earth may share. Amen Susanne Brough, UK From ‘Dear Lord...’, a new collection of prayers and poems from MU members across the world 9
LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 SPECIAL SERVICES FOR ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS This December, please join us for a whole variety of ways to celebrate together, being guided to God’s great gift of Jesus Christ. MESSY CHURCH CHRISTMAS AND CHRISTINGLE - Sunday, 9th, 3:00pm Messy Church’s answer to Merry Christmas! A time of fun with crafts, games and other activities which, this year, will include our celebration of Christingle. This is an event for everyone, but is especially aimed at families with children of Primary School and Pre-Primary School ages. FAMILY CAROL SERVICE – Sunday, 16th, 3:30pm This is the traditional All Saints’ Carol Service with the School choir, Leek Wootton Handbells, Church Christmas Choir – and most of all, YOURSELVES. There will also be refreshments to enjoy after the service. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE EARLIER THAN USUAL START TIME. The ‘Churches Together’ card you will receive with ‘Your Call’ magazine shows a different time as it was produced before we realised the need to rearrange. The change is due to some of us, in the handbells group, also playing at the service in Ashow, where the service time has been put back 30 minutes to 5:30pm. NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS SERVICE – Sunday, 23rd, 6:00pm The Church Christmas Choir will again get a second chance to lead us in Christmas Worship at this Carol Service that links us with the spirit of Christmas Past with Readings from the Authorised Version of the Bible. This year, we hope to welcome the Handbell ringers too to add that little extra to our celebrations. BLESSING OF THE CRIB – Monday, 24th, 4:00pm Our Mary and Joseph crib figures arrive, from their annual ‘Posada’ journey around various homes in the area, to join the shepherds and wise men gathering in our Crib to welcome the baby Jesus. Children (and others) are invited to come to the service dressed as shepherds, kings, angels or animals to take part in the Nativity scene which we build up as we travel through the Christmas Story. MIDNIGHT COMMUNION – Monday, 24th, 11:30pm The ‘first communion of Christmas’ begins in the still of the night as we gather to remember and celebrate together that Holy Night in Bethlehem. CHRISTMAS MORNING COMMUNION – Tuesday, 25th, 9:00am For those who prefer to sleep at midnight, there is another opportunity to take Christmas Communion at the morning service, which will follow the ancient liturgy of the Book of Common Prayer. CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION – Tuesday, 25th, 11:00am Let the party begin! Come to enjoy some fun as we worship Jesus in a more informal way; giving thanks for God’s greatest present to us – as well as showing off some of the presents already received this Christmas Day. CHURCHES TOGETHER IN KENILWORTH AND DISTRICT www.lovekenilworth.org.uk It will come as no surprise to know that Christmas is also being celebrated in the other fellowships of our Churches Together in Kenilworth and District group. This year, the Churches Together card will arrive with the ‘Your Call’ magazine. A warm welcome will await you in all our places of worship. 10
LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 www.leekwootton.org.uk LEEK WOOTTON & GUY’S CLIFFE PARISH COUNCIL Clerk to the Parish Council : Helen Eldridge t : 853841 The Parish Council met on Tuesday, 6 November 2018, at Leek Wootton Village Hall. Discussion included the following: CHANGE TO STAGECOACH SERVICES Concerns have been raised to the Council by residents that the Stagecoach bus service through the parish is to be cut. This issue has been raised with County Councillor Redford, who has confirmed that Stagecoach plan to remove daily services from South Kenilworth, Leek Wootton. Hatton and Hampton Lucy. WCC is currently seeking possible alternative contractors to serve those areas to the south of Kenilworth that will be left without a service after January. The Parish Council will continue to monitor this issue. SALE OF WOODCOTE (FORMER POLICE HQ) The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Warwickshire has written to the PC with an update regarding the future of the former Police HQ. Whilst there is no precise date given for the Police to vacate Woodcote, the OPCC has instructed property specialists to market it for sale. The Parish Council is continuing to meet with both the OPCC and WDC Planning to express the need for an integrated masterplan for the whole site. THE PARISH DIRECTORY 2019 You will notice that the 2019 Directory has not been distributed with this issue of The Link. Due to the new GDPR legislation all local organisations will be contacted by the Parish Council and asked to consent to having personal data published. This is especially important with local community groups and societies where the contact details are often people’s home phone numbers or email addresses. The Parish Directory is intended to promote community interaction and inclusion of parish-based organisations and businesses is free, if it is run from inside the parish and/or is a door-step service for the benefit of the community. If you run a community-based group, organisation or business and wish to be included, please contact the Clerk. COMMUNITY MAINTENANCE WCC Highways: A new grit bin has been installed on Croft Road and WCC Highways informed of its location and it is awaiting being filled. Permanent repairs to the pavement at The Puffins, Warwick Road, have now been undertaken and the various displaced sign posts that were discussed at the last Parish Council meeting have been restored to their correct directions. Road repairs and leaves will be an ongoing issue over the next months as the temperatures drop. 11
LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 Street Lighting: A number of faulty street lights have been reported and repaired recently. With the darker nights during winter it is important to report faulty street lamps. Please report these to the Clerk at the above contact details, giving the street name and post number. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR It only remains to wish you a very merry Christmas, on behalf of the Parish Council. We look forward to 2019 and wish everyone a very happy New Year! NEXT MEETING There is no meeting in December. The next meeting is an ordinary meeting and will be on Tuesday, 8 January 2019, at All Saints’ Church, Leek Wootton. Minutes of all Parish Council meetings, when signed, are published on the website at www.leekwootton.org.uk. Any local issues can always be raised at meetings under Public Question Time or by contacting any of the Parish Councillors or the Clerk, details of whom are listed on all noticeboards, the Parish Council website, in the Parish Directory and the Bulletin. BEACON OF LIGHT Letter from the Chairman of the PC I wish to congratulate and thank all members of the community who were engaged with the construction of the magnificent ‘Beacon of Light’, which provided the finale to our Remembrance Day commemoration. Aside from the many personal contributions to this effort, specific thanks are also due to two of the principal employers in our parish for their unstinting provision of resources to assist the construction. Broad Lane Leisure provided the transport and labour to enable the collection of the materials from various locations in the area, whilst the Warwickshire Golf and Country Club, in addition to providing the location, helped with the intricate building and supplied refreshments to the many of our parishioners and friends, who attended on the night. Though perhaps not visible from space, as we had supposed, the beacon was a dramatic closure to a very successful day’s events. It is rewarding that members of the parish, when called upon, truly do act as a community. Colin Smith VOLUNTEER TASK FORCE There are a number of ‘orphaned’ plots in Leek Wootton & Guy’s Cliffe parish. If you would like to see an improvement in these areas and can spare the time, please sign up for the Volunteer Task Force (VTF) invitation/reminder email and you will be contacted when there is going to be a VTF event – there will be no ongoing commitment. (The Parish Council has appropriate insurance and will carry out any required risk assessments.) Also, if there is any area that you have concerns about the maintenance of, please let the Parish Council know (t : 853841 / e : clerk@lwandgc-parishcouncil.co.uk) 12

Watch this space for further news and planning meetings in the New Year. www.pawsitivevetcare.co.uk PAWSITIVE VET CARE m : 07410411461 Paws for Thought By Helen Perryman According to the latest PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) report around half of dogs and cats in the UK are overweight or obese. This is a growing problem and causes significant health and welfare problems for our pets. Being overweight increases the chances of disease such as: • Diabetes • Arthritis • Pancreatitis • Cancer • Breathing problems Just like in people, losing weight can be a real challenge so where possible it is best to prevent obesity in the first place. Making sure puppies are fed appropriately and kept in a good condition can go a long way to make sure they stay a good weight as adults. Some dogs, particularly Labradors, have a gene which stops them feeling full so for these dogs, careful management is needed at an early age to reduce their risk. If your pet is overweight, a special diet is usually the best way to help shed the pounds. Simply reducing the amount of their current food will often lead to them being hungry and can also lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. ‘Light’ versions of normal diets can be helpful to prevent weight gain but often are not low enough in calories for weight loss. Seeking advice from your vet or vet nurse is the best way to ensure healthy weight loss. Regular weight checks will ensure your pet is losing the right amount of weight and can support you as their owner through this, often emotionally challenging, time. The struggle is worth it, however. Your pet should live a longer and happier life if they are the correct weight. 16

LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 Your Letters If you would like to write to us, please email the Editorial Team at : link@leekwoottonchurch.co.uk Remembrance Sunday This month we have received a number of letters and stories from parish residents about local, national and international Remembrance events for the centenary of the Armistice. Starting with those closest to home: LEEK WOOTTON & GUY’S CLIFFE Everyone involved in planning the events held in the village to mark the centenary of the end of the first World War should be congratulated!! It is obvious that a great deal of thought and hard work culminated in extremely moving services appreciated by everyone who attended. A great big THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!! Well done!! Eileen Clayton I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting to thank all of you who helped to make Remembrance Sunday so memorable. You all worked so hard; the poppies around the village, the display in the church, the slides of the soldiers and the children playing their part in the activities, which were so well organised, all finalised by the lighting of the beacon, which could be seen all over the region. The community should be very proud of you all. Well done. Ros Commander THE TOWER OF LONDON Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers (photo on next page) We approached the Tower of London in the torrential rain on the cold dark evening of 10 November. We had been lucky enough to win tickets from the Daily Mail to be able to enter The Moat and view the installation - Beyond the Deepening Shadow. We arrived just before the bugle sounded the Last Post at 5:00pm and were allowed into The Moat first. Four years previously, on a hot August afternoon, we were lucky enough to have been chosen as volunteers to plant Poppies in the installation - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red. This turned out to be one of the best experiences of our lives to date. To be able to be part of it again was just amazing. Similar in scale, and again used as a focal point as a tribute to the fallen of the Great War, Beyond the Deepening Shadow did not disappoint. Despite the weather, the ethereal atmosphere created by the solemn lighting of the 10,000 flickering flames, which started from a single Beefeater’s Torch, was breath taking. The flames were progressively lit as the smoke drifted across the sodden landscape of The Moat. A wall of white noise around The Moat from a specially commissioned soundscape (based on a Sonnet written by Mary Borden, a frontline nurse in the Great War), screened the noise of the city and 21

This augmented and complemented the total visual spectacle and created a space in one’s mind to focus and remember. Douglas Faulconbridge, Chairman Leek Wootton Scout Group THE CENOTAPH A Nation’s Thank You - The People’s Procession - Armistice 2018 On Sunday, 11 November we were privileged to be among the 10,000 who took part in A Nation’s Thank You - the People’s Procession - Armistice 2018 at The Cenotaph in London. There were ex-service personnel, descendants of casualties and other members of the public who wanted to pay their respects. Many carried photos, wore medals and carried wreaths to lay at The Cenotaph. The playing of ‘Nimrod’ brought a hush and signalled the start of the nation’s Act of Remembrance. After the two-minute silence, as the veterans procession began and the tone of the music changed, many joined in with gusto singing the wartime favourites. An increasing ripple of applause rolled down our waiting lines as those veterans unable to march the whole distance, came back down the Mall. It wasn’t until nearly 1:00pm that our part of the procession got underway and we were surprised to see how many people still lined the route. I carried a poppy cross with a photo of my Great Uncle, James McCluskey, who died on 7 September 1914, aged 21 years, of wounds suffered in the battle of Le Cateau. Cliff carried the names of all those from the parish who gave their lives in both world wars. It was both a proud and emotional moment as we walked past The Cenotaph itself. In the evening we were fortunate to have tickets to go down into the moat of the Tower of London for ‘Beyond the Deepening Shadow’. 10,000 flames were lit by volunteers and haunting music created a reflective atmosphere. We found a quiet place on the pathway around the flames and took the opportunity to stand still and read aloud the names from the parish. It was an honour to carry those names with us and the day will remain in our memory for a very long time. Denise and Cliff Gregory AUSTRALIA I am at the Anzac Memorial in Sydney which is quite magnificent! It has a moving exhibition inside, beautiful bronzes, flame and artwork. Apart from a wonderful structure you actually have to see it to appreciate it all. They are delighted that we are here and shall attend the full service on Sunday, eleven hours ahead of you. I shall be taking ‘Hill Wootton’ to the service, so shall be doing my bit. (photo on previous page) Sonia Scrimshire 24
LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2018 Once again, our parish excelled itself and raised the fantastic sum of £2,306.17 for the Poppy Appeal this year. This was a special year marking the 100 th anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War. My heartfelt thanks go to all individuals and businesses who gave so generously to help our service men and women and their families. Richard Coates MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT Chairman : Ros Commander t : 511373 We had a super Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning at the end of September when Barry Meatyard came to give us a talk on the reclaiming of the Guy’s Cliffe Walled Garden. It was very interesting, and the gardens are well worth a visit. The committee made the cakes and we raised £850; thank you to everyone for your support. On 9 November we held a Bridge Day at Kenilworth Bridge Club, with the committee providing morning coffee and lunch. It was a lovely, informal day with lots of laughter and a record £1,560 was raised. Well done to all on the committee and thank you to all who took part. ADVERTISING 25

LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 www.historygroup.leekwoottonandguyscliffe.org.uk LEEK WOOTTON HISTORY GROUP Chairman : Paul Eldridge t : 854347 A new acquisition After the commemorations of Remembrance Sunday, the History Group received an email forwarded by the Vicar. Peter Brookes, from Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria, had made contact offering to gift a book, which was once owned by Sir Francis Waller, Bart. Mr Brookes had been given the antique copy of Nelson for his 60th birthday some years ago by his son and his family. It has a presentation plate in the flyleaf, showing that it was given to Sir Francis as a first prize for achievements in mathematics, awarded in December 1893. At Christmas 1893 Sir Francis was 13 and a pupil at The Golden Parsonage, a boys’ prep school in Hertfordshire. He had inherited his title and Woodcote when his father died in February 1892 and it is interesting that his brother Wathen’s photograph album, which the History Group bought a couple of years ago, was given to him that same Christmas. Francis would go on to study at Harrow, then to Sandhurst and to serve with the Royal Fusiliers (City of London) Regiment between 1899 and 1908, which included the Boer War. Between 1908 and 1914 Sir Francis was a popular figure in Sir Francis, or the local community, he was patron of the living of Lillington, a ‘Far’, from his magistrate, Deputy Lieutenant of Warwickshire and, in 1913, held brother’s photo album the post of High Sheriff of Warwickshire. He was also the District Commissioner for Kenilworth Scouts. In 1914 Sir Francis wasted no time in re-enlisting with his former regiment but was the first of the men of Leek Wootton to fall, on 25 October 1914, at Neuve- Chappelle. Mr Brookes had investigated the name on the flyleaf when he received the gift and had read about Sir Francis’ memorial in All Saints’ Church. During the poignant events of Remembrance weekend and the centenary of the armistice, he decided to offer to send Sir Francis’ book ‘home’, with the blessing of his son, who had given it to him. The History Group was pleased to accept the gift. We now wonder at how very different the world of Mathematics at the end of the 19C was, compared to that of the pupils in Waller Class at All Saints’ Academy with ‘Mathletics’ and currently “…using the RURC approach (Read, Underline, Represent, Calculate and Check) to solve a range of multiplication word problems – related to a range of contexts.”? (From Newsletter 2018/684) As with all property of the History Group, Sir Francis’ book is available to anyone who wishes to look at it and will be available to the school for educational purposes. Please contact us if you are interested. 27

LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 www.leekwoottonhorticulturalsociety.co.uk LEEK WOOTTON & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Hon Secretary : Steph Jones Mary Murdoch t : 854103 In Memoriam It was with sadness we learnt of the passing of Alex Hughes who was the Chairman of our Society for a number of years. We extend sympathy to his family. 150th Anniversary Planters Leek Wootton Horticultural Society, as you are probably aware, is celebrating it’s 150th year from the first annual show in 1868. As an organisation we wanted to mark this in a permanent way and investigated locating planters on the entry points into the village, on Warwick Road. These would be maintained by the Society’s members. The Parish Council has now agreed to them being introduced and so, within the next couple of months, they should be installed. We hope this will brighten up the entrances to Leek Wootton. ADVANCE NOTICES: The Society’s AGM will take place on Wednesday, 13 March 2019 at the Village Hall at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend. The Photographic categories for the 2019 Annual Horticultural Show will be Orange and Silhouette. We look forward to seeing your entries at the August Show. Date for your diary – Next year’s Garden Visit will be on Saturday, 8 June 2019. Further details will be announced in The Link. ADVERTISING 29

LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 www.ecochurch.org.uk ECO CHURCH Ideas for a more Environmentally-friendly Christmas Trees • Artificial Trees - If you've got an artificial tree already, keep using it – make it last as long as possible, or if you don’t want it, give it away. • Real trees - Look for one that has been grown sustainably, not in a way that's environmentally damaging, look for the FSC-certification logo. • Grow your own - Buying a potted tree with roots lets you grow it outside and use it again next year, reducing its environmental impact and costing you less. But they do need some looking after, and you'll need a big pot. Alternatively, if you're feeling a bit radical or non-traditional, get a large perennial indoor plant – like a yucca, palm, fig etc – and just decorate it at Christmas time. • Recycle your real tree - The trees are shredded, then used as mulch on plants in parks, or on woodland paths or else rotted down and recycled as compost. Gifts • Home-made crafts or foods are lovely alternatives to the usual shop-bought stuff. • Pledge to do something nice for someone, such as take on a trip, babysit, do some decorating, make some curtains. Make the gift of your time the things that counts. • Buy a Charity Gift such as from Christian Aid or Samaritan’s Purse Food • Why not try cutting down (or out) the meat this Christmas – at least for some days of the festive break? • If buying meat, try choosing organic and free-range, and support small-scale farming wherever possible. • Decide to eat less meat as a New Year resolution. • Don’t waste food - Try the BBC Good Food leftovers recipes for ideas to create new meals and make full use of the fridge and freezer. (www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/ collection/christmas-leftovers) • Keep left overs in Tupperware type boxes instead of using cling film or foil. • When shopping look to buy items with the minimum of packaging. • Consider food miles and so buy vegetables that are in season in the UK or fruit from Europe, not further afield. Decorations • Make your own Christmas decorations from natural materials • Use scarfs instead of Christmas wrapping paper. • If you're using fairy lights, make sure you get LED ones – they're the most energy efficient. And put them on a timer so they're not on all day. • Forget the tinsel and glitter • For more ideas see websites for Friends of the Earth, Good Energy and Green People 33

LEEK WOOTTON LINK | DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019 Peaceful praise on a silent night 200 years ago this Christmas Eve a parish priest near Salzburg in Austria and his organist wrote a new carol for the midnight mass. The priest, Fr Joseph Mohr, provided the words in a poem he had recently written. The organist was Franz Xavier Gruber who created a tune of haunting beauty. The carol, Stille Nacht, was duly sung at the service. We don’t know what the congregation thought of it, though I bet someone said, ‘I can’t stand all these new tunes!’ But the simple words and wistful melody were to become one of the world’s favourite carols, translated into some 140 languages; ‘Silent Night’ as we know it. My father told me of his experience in the First World War, when on Christmas Day the British troops heard the sound of German soldiers singing Stille Nacht. They responded with Silent Night, and the sacred words echoed across the blood-stained no man’s land. It is a carol that breathes peace, quite unlike the traditional ones that stir us to action – ‘O come all ye faithful’, ‘Hark the herald angels sing’. This German song is about the infinite peace of nativity – Mary pondering in her heart all that was happening and the shepherds returning to their fields. The birth of this royal baby went largely unnoticed. There were no crowds, no cheering, no processions. But for two centuries people have sung this precious song of peace to recall that silent and holy night. Canon David Winter (from Parish Pump) ADVERTISING 35
