NEWS IN BRIEF WENDY TUCK WOWS THE WORLD CYCA Member Wendy Tuck History has made history, becoming the first female skipper to ever win a round-the-world yacht race after clinching the overall victory in the Clipper 2017-18 Race. Wendy and her Sanya Serenity Coast team went into the 13th and final race of the Clipper 2017-18 Race on top of the overall standings and did enough to put the result out of reach for the other 10 teams ahead of the sprint finish up the Mersey to Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, UK. Wendy, 53, from Sydney, who claimed the Jane Tate 6 Emerson Street, Russell Island, QLD Memorial Trophy for the first female skipper and second Clipper 70 Division, Sanya Serenity Coast, in Absolute last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race (pictured right), said: “I can’t believe it. It hasn’t really sunk in really but I am just so happy. It is so, so special. “I don’t think it’s about being a woman. It’s just, do what I do. But I am very proud and even prouder of my team. They are Waterfront the ones that did all the work and considering many had never sailed before, what they have accomplished is incredible.” From everyone at the CYCA, congratulations Wendy! WINTER SERIES AUDI CENTRE SYDNEY WINTER SERIES The Ladies Day series has been included in the winter sailing calendar for many years and is run as the opening, mid-series and ending race in the CYCA’s Audi Centre Sydney Winter Series. For many teams it’s not about changing-up the whole crew and filling the team with just females, it’s about working the gender balance and The close racing across the giving everyone a go. As many of the boats will head in to the summer series and compete in fleets under this system it means that there is time to test the boat against many of their usual competitors in varying conditions and situations that will prove to be beneficial to their team’s improvement. “The close racing across the IRC Division pushed us to continually improve our game-day performance week on week,” Zoe Taylor, owner and skipper of Grace O’Malley, says. “It’s a fantastic playing field to try out different boat set-ups in varying conditions over 10 weeks. Even though inshore and offshore are two different headsets, the series is really nice preparation for us to work as a team ahead of the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore.” Picture left: Sailors with disABILITIES continue to improve lives by giving opportunities to people of all backgrounds.
