THE BORDERS GROUP OF PARISHES My best ever Christmas present was probably the second-hand bike I got when I was a young teenager. My widowed mum couldn’t afford a new one, but I DECEMBER 2018 rode it with a smile a mile wide. Christmas itself is about a gift – God’s gift of his Son Jesus, born of Mary, and no Christmas celebrations are complete without that. We’re also reminded about the wise men and those fantastic symbolic JANUARY 2019 gifts – gold for a king, incense for the worship of God and myrrh for death. The trouble now though is that Revd Kevin Cecil - 01600 713459: kevincecil@hotmail.co.uk Christmas has become like a birthday party in which The Vicarage, 38 Hillcrest Rd, Wyesham, Monmouth NP25 3LH everyone gives gifts to everyone else but rather Bishopswood, Dixton, Ganarew, Whitchurch, Wyesham fewer give anything to Jesus. Revd Ben Bentham 01989 770454: benbentham@yahoo.co.uk The Vicarage, Llangrove, Ross-on-Wye, HR9 6EZ How can you give a worthwhile gift to Jesus this Christmas? In the Parable of the Goodrich/Welsh Bicknor, Llangarron, Llangrove, Marstow, Welsh Newton/Llanrothal Sheep and the Goats in Matthew’s gospel, which is about caring for the needy, Jesus says, “Whatever you did for the least of these my brethren, you did for me.” ASSOCIATE MINISTERS So I am going to suggest that you give generously to Jesus by giving generously Revd Jill Stephens - 01600 890975: jill.stephens1@btinternet.com Revd Richard Jones - 01989 770254: richard.jones@langstone-court.org.uk to the needy through a Christian charity (and I am suggesting a Christian charity because it’s a Christian festival. Put a smile on someone’s face, or at least help to ASSISTANT CURATE take the misery off someone’s face. Revd Penny Powdrill - 01600 714096: pennypowdrill@btinternet.com You could, for example, give to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal for its work HON. ASSISTANT CLERGY with the homeless and vulnerable, or to Christians Against Poverty for its work Brian Phillips Jim Cross with those in this country crippled by debt. Or how about giving something to the Children’s Society which works to protect and help children and young people. HELPLINES There are worldwide Christian medical charities like Mercy Ships. Mercy Ships, as the name may suggest, has a hospital ship and treats people in dozens of the world’s HOPELineUK poorest countries. Starfish Malawi is a Christian organisation working in education; 0800 068 41 41 agriculture, vocational training, health and social care for children and young people in Malawi, and there is also Starfish Asia. TEARFund is a large Christian aid agency 0845 790 90 90 01989 769581 doing disaster relief, working to alleviate poverty and partnering churches to make people’s lives better. Or how about Toybox, which is a Christian charity working to Please submit material for the February 2019 issue - help street children? It says of them that often “their future is bleak and their life NO LATER than 15 January 2019 to your village correspondent expectancy terrifyingly low.” (their email address is below each correspondent’s name on pages 4–13). All of these Christian charities, and many more besides have websites which can be The Borders Group of parishes does not endorse any of the goods consulted.
