President's Message...... Suitcases unpacked? Check. President’s Message School back in session? Check. Calendar filled with AWA events and activities? Check! With our “Aloha” theme (and plenty of pineapples, maybe even a few pink leis) we held another very successful Welcome Fair in August. Many thanks to Machelle Robbins and her team for taking time out of their busy summer schedules to plan and organize this fantastic event. It was Mel Rice great to have all of our social, sports, special interest and community outreach volunteers on hand to tell us all about the amazing activities that they have planned. One event I am looking forward to this year is our annual Carpet Auction, which will be held at the Novotel Singapore on Friday 28th September. For over 20 years, the AWA has partnered with Eastern Carpets to put on this impressive event. Whether you buy something or not, this is a great opportunity to experience the excitement of a real live auction with some great deals and an evening that you won’t want to miss. With October just around the corner, thoughts of cooler weather, autumn colors and Halloween candy come to mind. While we may not have “fall type weather” here in Singapore, and the colors of the palm trees won’t change; we might just have the perfect Halloween event for you and your family to attend. For the third year in a row, AWA will be participating in the Peoples Association’s Halloween Night. This Halloween fair will transform the Cairnhill Community Centre into a gigantic haunted house, complete with activities and fun for kids of all ages. The AWA will have a room with all kinds of mysterious thrilling activities, so please bring your family and come enjoy this great event! While you are on the lookout for all things fall, don’t forget to register for our annual Home Tour which will be held on Tuesday October 30th. Machelle Robbins and Dana Thompson have spent countless hours scouting out some of the best and unique homes that will be featured. This event is extremely popular and is for members-only; tickets will sell fast so be ready on September 1st when registration opens. Whether you are brand new or returning to Singapore, at home with little ones or work full time, the AWA is the right place to come to make friends and find fun and fulfillment this year. With so many activities and events to choose from you will be spoiled for choice. Benefits of AWA Membership to Business Owners Nominations While AWA is a social rather than a business networking organization, we do feel strongly about supporting our members who are business owners. The following summarizes the opportunities we offer to members who own their own business: Business Monday On our AWA Facebook member community, you can post to our members about your brand or event on the first Monday of the month. This has been selected to optimize the day of the week and time of the month to post, whilst keeping this group otherwise advertising-free. We think this works best to really draw attention to the posts when they go up. (for non-members the price is $75 per post) Discounted Advertising for Members For any advertising in our magazine or website we offer our members $75 off per advert. If you buy a package of ads (6 or 10) you also get an additional % discount, making it even more cost effective. If you are interested you can view our rates here, or contact our advertising manager, Anna, at bt_advertising@awasingapore.org. Preferential Vendor Prices AWA Members get a discount when buying a vendor table at one of our events. The price is communicated at the time vendor registration begins. Email crc@awasingapore.org to be added to our potential vendor list. AWA Workshops & Speaking Opportunities Our workshop or speaker’s lunch programs can be great opportunities to give back to fellow members while also letting them know about your business. Email workshops@awasingapore.org or monthlylunch@awasingapore. org to be added to our potential speakers lists. AWA Conference Room Space As a member you can use the AWA conference room in our Scotts Rd office for business meetings at a discounted rate. Lucky Draw at Events We often have lucky draw opportunities at our events, and always give credit to the donors in event-related promotional materials. If you are interested in contributing a prize to any of AWA’s Major Events, please email crc@awasingapore.org. Sponsor & Partner Opportunities To provide events at a lower price we always try to keep our costs low. You might consider sponsoring a photo booth at one of our events, they are super fun and will really get your brand out there, as members keep the photos on their fridge all the time! To discuss these opportunities please email crm@awasingapore.org Visit Australia & New Zealand with us... Explore our natural World Heritage sites. COMMUNITY Community Service SERVICE Highlighting Our AWA Members At Ronald McDonald House Charities I’m very proud of all of our AWA members who have committed to volunteer at RMHC, both at NUH and IMH. I’m happy to report that as of June 2018, the Ronald McDonald Family Room at IMH has 11 volunteers, 9 of which are AWA members! More than 10 volunteers at NUH are AWA members. One in particular is Robin Phillips, who is now employed full time by RMHC of Singapore. Recently I spoke with Robin to find out why RMHC has a special place in her heart, and how volunteering has turned into a job opportunity for her here in Singapore. Please see our interview below. 1. Robin, please tell us how Long you have been an AWA member, how Long you have been in Singapore, and how Long you plan to stay. 6 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG Bamboo Telegraph September/October 2018
We moved here in October 2016 and I joined right away! My husband isn’t on a contract with his employment so I tell people “we’re here until we’re not here”! But, I think we will be here at least through 2019, if not longer. Community Service 2. Why did you start volunteering for RMHC, and why did you choose RMHC as opposed to other volunteer opportunities in Singapore? Back in Houston, my husband’s company’s charity of choice was Ronald McDonald House, so we did quite a few things with them. I actually didn’t know there was an RMHC here in Singapore until June of last year when I saw something about it on the AWA website. I would have started here earlier, had I known or paid attention. I really like the organization and what it stands for. The mission is consistent globally and I think that is refreshing and important - make sure families who have children in the hospital are as comfortable as possible. I am very proud to be a part of it. I did volunteer with some women’s shelters and food distribution facilities before finding RMHC. I enjoyed it very much, but really started devoting a lot of my time to RMHC, and it started to take priority to other volunteering opportunities for me. 3. What, in your opinion are the benefits of volunteering? Of course, the main benefit of volunteering is seeing how the work you do affects the person for whom you are doing it, right? Even if you feel like your volunteering contribution is small, it might not be to the person receiving it. Seeing and hearing how grateful someone is for the work we do, it the best part. For me personally, it really gives me a sense of fulfillment, like I am doing something to help towards the greater good of society. I know that sounds incredibly cliche, but as an expat wife, it’s not uncommon to start struggling with having an identity (or lack there of) and feeling like you have something worth contributing. Volunteering fills that gap for me. 4. In what ways do you see our volunteers changing the lives of others? Being a volunteer at RMHC means being a friendly face and a smile. It also means being the gateway to a place where the families of children in the hospital can go to relax and escape, if only for a second, the incredibly stressful time they are having. Something as simple as a smiling face has a profound affect on the families. They open up to the volunteers, talk about their children, and genuinely look to them as a calming force. Sveral of the families who have benefit from RMHC, whether they were the child in the ward, or the family of the child, have come back and volunteered with RMHC! I think that speaks for itself! 5. How did volunteering at RMHC become an employment opportunity for you? (And by the way, congratulations!) Haha! Well, thank you! Honestly, it kind of fell into my lap. I have been a volunteer here for almost a year. The existing manager left to pursue a new opportunity in April, so I reached out to a board member telling him I was keen to take over the role and bibbidi bobbidi boo, I have a job! 6. What is your new role title and what are your new duties? My new title is “Operations Executive for RMHC Singapore at NUH”. My duties are to over-see all of the operations of the House and the Family Room - the 2 facilities we have at NUH. That pretty much means making sure things run efficiently. In addition to partnering with the pediatric wards, I collaborate with NUH’s Volunteer Communications department to make sure we give every family possible to opportunity to benefit from our charity. I am also responsible for making sure we have enough volunteers, engaging them and making sure they are happy. :) Don’t forget to attend the AWA Welcome Back Fair on August 29, 2018 at the Fort Canning Lodge to check out all volunteer opportunities and sign up to take a tour of The Ronald McDonald House at NUH on September 19th! The nominations process is managed by a Nominations Chair and Committee, drawn from the general membership. The committee also includes the President, GM & Historian from the current board. The committee spends January to March looking for and interviewing candidates. They also host a Leadership Coffee in February for anyone keen to learn more. The committee recommends a slate of officers to the existing board in April, and then to the General Membership at the AGM in May. The time commitment varies but is approximately 5 days a month in February and March. This is a great way to be involved with the organization of AWA over a limited time frame. THE FORK AND CHOPSTICK The Fork and Chopstick Mission: To highlight the off the beaten path, heritage, or just plain fun chomping grounds By Jenni & Eric Lee SBCD Korean Tofu House Millenia Walk, 9 Raffles Boulevard, S. 039596 Tanjong Pagar Centre, 7 Wallich Street, S. 078884 Los Angeles, aside from being known for Hollywood and beaches, has one of the most vibrant ethnic food scene in the US. Not surprisingly, this includes Korean cuisine - greater LA having the largest Korean community in the US. Most people’s entry level foray into Korean cuisine is with the ubiquitous Korean BBQ, progressing to comfort foods and hangover cures in stew form, including the Korean army stew. For some people, comfort food is chicken soup, for others there’s congee and for Koreans it can be soontofu. (“Soon” means soft.) It’s a stew simmered in a pork and vegetable based broth, which is deeply red due to large amounts of Korean chilli powder. Why are we talking about Los Angeles? We frequented BCD Tofu House in LA and now Singapore has two branches of SBCD Tofu House, specializing in soontofu. The soft and silky tofu is freshly made daily on the premises, using specially imported soybean from South Korea. SUNDAY LUNCH CHOMP: We ordered combos, like soon tofu and bibimbap (rice mixed with seasoned vegetables), and soontofu with unagi (freshwater eel) - all priced about $24. A standout dish at SBCD is freshwater eel. This Korean version comes grilled - tender and smoky. We highly recommend it! (A sweeter Japanese style sauce is served on the side.) There are four levels of soontofu spiciness to choose from, along with the option to have it non-spicy. The dishes come with rice served in a piping hot stone bowl, where you scoop out enough rice to eat with your sew but leave a thin layer of rice that crisp up. You can later pour the corn tea into the stone bowl for a crunchy, soupy way to finish your meal. COMPARISON: Portion sizes are generous and almost what you would find in LA. You are also provided with banchan, or Korean condiments, and refills can be requested. The LA version of the restaurant is open 24 hrs a day, serving a clientele of mixed cultures… comfort food is needed round the clock! We would also like to pay tribute upon the passing of Jonathan Gold, the restaurant critic for the LA Times, who told the story of LA through its food and the cultures that represent the city. Thank you for showing us the mosaic that is Los Angeles. AMBIENCE & DECOR: Light & airy. Luxurious canteen feel. ADVENTURE LEVEL - Advanced, if you are ready to go beyond introductory Korean BBQ. PRE/POST MEAL: Walking around this mall is actually unique and interesting, with many specialty shops rather than ubiquitous chains. The Tanjong Pagar location has a number of watering holes to walk to along Tras Street and environs. RANT & RAVE: Crazy hot level of spice was disappointingly not crazy nor hot. Good value meal for Singapore, but alas, still much higher prices than Los Angeles. Bamboo Telegraph September/October 2018 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG 19

Top Tennis Tips Tennis/Running Assessments Some Words of Advice From Coach Azhar Azhar Zainudin “Please don’t stress about assessments! I’ve been doing this for several years and it doesn’t take me long to analyse your technical skill and matchplay ability. I look at variety of strokes and spins with consistency and depth. The transition from the baseline to moving forwards to the net is also very important while playing. During doubles play I look at serve, return of serve, volleys and positioning. Movement on court will be equally important. I only judge on what I see on the day of assessment. Many ladies worry that they might be partnered with someone who is a better or lower level of player than them during assessments. Do not worry! More advanced players should be able to handle any kind of returns coming to them - who you are assessed with will NOT reduce your assessment level. You are assessed purely on YOUR technical skill - not theirs. In the second part of the assessment I group similar level players together to observe matchplay." Thanks Coach Azhar! Do take a moment to read the helpful info sheet on the tennis section of the AWA website that outlines in more detail what is expected at each level. Coach Azhar receives a short summary of your tennis experience too. Take the time to warm up on court - it really helps with the nerves. Above all this is just a guide - you can always get reassessed as you feel your game improves. Just get yourself on court and have fun! RUNNING Monthly Update Throughout July we met and ran our regular routes, whilst sharing coffee and conversation after runs. We even managed a toilet stop at ‘Peek-a-Loo’ on Mount Faber and adopted a dog for our photoshoot at Marina Bay/ Labrador Park. Whilst many were on their travels in July we enjoyed receiving WhatsApp photos from personal runs in The States, Europe and Asia. On the 22nd June 2018 we had our bitter-sweet farewell (never goodbye) lunch at Bakalaki Greek Taverna in Tiong Bahru with our glorious, fabulous, amazing, inspiring leader Jeanine. We all want to thank her for her sheer dedication, positivity and organizational skills. Don’t panic, we have a new team ‘running’ the group, so welcome Alison (L), Rachel, Claire and Jo. It’s going to be a tough act to follow but we will do our best. We look forward to old and new runners joining the group in August/ September. Our first run back will be the 7th August 2018, 8 am at Botanic Gardens meeting at the MRT Gate. We meet at Botanic Gardens every Tuesday and at various locations on a Thursday. We are excited to be getting ready for our Bangkok Runcation in November. If you’re interested in coming for a run please email us at running@awasingapore.org. We look forward to meeting you. AWA WRITERS’BLOCK Writers’ Block Writers' Block is a monthly contribution from our AWA Writers’ Group members. Hot Commodity by Stephanie Suga Chen Upon arrival at our Airbnb unit, the kids started unpacking and squabbling over storage space while I checked out the kitchen. Opening the cabinets and drawers, I was shocked to find them completely empty. “This might be problematic,” I said aloud. I messaged our host, asking if it would be possible to provide some kitchenware. We were staying for a month, I reminded him, and would need to eat. He replied that he could bring over a pot and a ladle, but that was the best he could do. “Can we just go out and buy some plates and bowls?” my son suggested. “That would be wasteful. We have plenty at home,” my daughter said pointedly. “We’ll be pioneers!” my husband cut in. “I have some stuff from lunch we can use,” he said, pulling out from his backpack a handful of napkins and a set of disposable chopsticks. *** And so it began, our month of zero-waste, not because we were particularly concerned about our carbon footprint, but because we needed every container, cup, and utensil we could get our hands on. Even plastic wrap and bread bags were saved and used again. After a few take-out meals, we amassed a small stock of wares and developed a meal repertoire that was sustain- able, if not a bit boring. Breakfast was cereal served in yesterday’s rinsed-out coffee cup with a hard-boiled egg served on a napkin, lunch sandwiches in a take-out box, dinner pasta or rice, dessert fruit eaten whole. One day I spotted a large plastic tray at the grocery store; four apples had been placed on it and wrapped up in clear cling wrap. Back home I would have grumbled at the waste, but here I zeroed in on the platter, maniacally ex- cited about my find. The tray became our largest “plate,” the only one that was big enough to comfortably chop vegetables on or hold a normal-sized serving of food. It also became the subject of innumerable fights between the children. “He got to use it for breakfast AND dinner yesterday,” my daughter protested. “I NEED it,” my son insisted. “I eat messier than she does.” One morning, I couldn’t find it. “Has anyone seen the big plate?” I asked, worried that it might have gotten thrown out accidentally. “In the fridge,” my husband answered. “I put some leftovers away.” “Are you crazy?” I exclaimed, retrieving the treasured item. “This plate is a hot commodity; you can’t just use it haphazardly!” “Sorry!” he said, taken aback by my forcefulness. “I won’t do it again!” *** At the end of the month, I stacked up our “plates” and “bowls” and placed them in the trash. Although we had had a wonderful stay, I couldn’t wait to get home and eat a meal using real cutlery. It wasn’t long before we started making plans for our next trip. As my husband and I discussed possible destina- tions, I overheard my daughter say to her brother, “I call dibs on the big plate.” Stephanie Suga Chen is the author of Travails of a Trailing Spouse, the bestselling novel from Straits Times Press about expat life in Singapore.
