supreme governor Q & A with Willard R. Kitchens Supreme Governor Willard R. Kitchens is already on the road visiting lodges and spreading his positivity for the Fraternity wherever he goes. Moose Magazine caught up with the Alabamian, who was installed as Supreme Governor at the 2017 Tampa Convention in July. What led you to join Prattville, AL Lodge 1864 in 1982? I had retired from the Navy and received an offer to work in the civil service to run the commissary store in Okinawa. We had settled in Prattville with our two nearly-grown children and my wife (Kay) didn’t want to go back overseas. When I WXUQHGWKHMREGRZQP\ZLIHVDLG´ZHQHHGWRÀQGVRPHSODFHWRJRμ$IULHQG of mine was a member of the Moose and I called and said, “I understand you guys KRVWGDQFHVμ6R,ZHQWIHOOLQORYHZLWKLWDQGKDYHEHHQHQMR\LQJLWHYHUVLQFH “... we have to get What has your focus been as Supreme Governor? back to fraternalism My primary focus is on membership. That’s my expertise. I want to continue the community service work that we have started. I think it’s really important and get back to the for all lodges to become active in their local communities. We need to let our basics in our local communities know that we are not a bar and we are there to help the community grow. I think this will help build membership. communities.” — Willard R. Kitchens Why is it important to do the things you hope to do as 2017-18 Supreme Governor Supreme Governor? We have two institutions that we support as a Fraternity: Mooseheart and Moosehaven. If we are going to continue to support them, we have to get back to fraternalism and get back to the basics in our local communities. We need to inform everyone that we are a fraternal organization. The public image of the Moose in too many towns is that we are the bar down the road, and we need to change that view because it’s not what we are. What are your hopes for the future of the Moose? I think we have a great future. In a recent Supreme Council meeting, we discussed on our last day the things we need to do in order to make our Fraternity great again. I watched and listened and it made me feel so good to think about the things that these men had to say about the Moose. We have some great talent in the Fraternity and I think it’s in great hands. I think there is also great talent coming into this organization to continue to help it grow. 22 moose august|september 2017 | www.mooseintl.org
