The City of Los Angeles holds many distinctions. L.A. is the entertainment capital of the world, a cultural
mecca boasting more than 100 museums, and a paradise of idyllic weather.

The 75-mile Los Angeles County coastline is home to Southern California’s greatest beaches, stretching
from Malibu to Long Beach. L.A.’s coastal regions boast some of the best surf spots, amazing oceanfront
dining and trendy shops. Each seaside town is unique, offering distinctive landmarks such as Santa Monica’s
famous pier, Venice’s iconic Muscle Beach, and Malibu’s stunning shorelines and Getty Villa.

Some of the world’s best-known and most iconic landmarks and attractions call Los Angeles home: the
Hollywood Sign; Griffith Observatory; the Getty Center; the Hollywood Walk of Fame; the TCL
Chinese Theatre; Space Shuttle Endeavour at the California Science Center; the Battleship USS Iowa
located at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro; Air Force One at the Ronald Reagan Library and
Universal Studios Hollywood, with its dynamic immersive experience, The Wizarding World of Harry
Potter™.

Moving around – Transportation
With so many historic landmarks, interesting neighbourhoods and exciting attractions, Los Angeles can be a
bit overwhelming. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to explore LA, whether it’s getting behind the
wheel, using a bit of pedal power, or letting someone else do the driving.

Hit the road and drive on legendary streets or along a scenic route. Metro’s subway trains, light rail and
buses transport hundreds of thousands of daily riders, while LA bike paths welcome a growing number of
bicyclists. For those with disabilities, Los Angeles is one of the best cities in the country in offering
convenient access.
Every day, The Metro efficiently transports
hundreds of tho sands of passengers throughout
LA via subway trains, light rail and buses.
Metro Rail, LA’s rapid transit rail system, has six
lines serving 80 stations across LA County. The
Metro Blue Line connects Long Beach and LA,
while the Metro Green Line runs between Norwalk
and Redondo Beach. The Metro Red Line subway
services Downtown, Hollywood and the San
Fernando Valley. The Metro Purple Line runs
between Union Station, Wilshire Boulevard and
Western Avenue. The Metro Gold Line runs from
Pasadena to East LA. The Metro Expo Line runs
                                                           between Culver City and Downtown.
Metro also operates about 200 bus lines across the city and offers three types of bus services:

Metro Local buses (painted orange) make frequent stops along major thoroughfares throughout the city.
Metro Rapid buses (painted red) stop less frequently and have special sensors that keep traffic lights green
when a bus approaches, and commuter-oriented Metro Express buses (painted blue) connect communities
with Downtown LA and other business districts and usually travel via the city’s freeways.

One of the best ways to explore Los Angeles is to take in the sights by car. LA’s freeways are essential
for navigating the city, so get to know major routes such as Interstates 405, 10, and 5.

Iconic Hollywood Boulevard and the legendary Sunset Strip are home to many of LA’s top landmarks,
attractions, restaurants, clubs and hotels. Wilshire Blvd. stretches from Downtown LA to the Westside, while
some of LA’s best views can be enjoyed on scenic drives along Pacific Coast Highway and Mulholland
 Drive.

Los Angeles is known for its car culture, but its bike

Twice a year, CicLAvia opens miles of city streets to
pedestrians and bicyclists. The area’s most popular
bike path starts in the Pacific Palisades and
                                                               continues to Redondo Beach.

LA county’s longest bike path is the San Gabriel

and the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area.

Theme Parks
The Los Angeles area certainly has it’s share of theme parks: Disneyland Resort, Universal Studios, Six
Flags Magic Mountain, Pacific Park and just a short drive away, Knotts Berry Farm. These are the places
you’ve dreamt of visiting, that’s why year after year, families visit them in the 10’s of thousands, creating
memories that last them a lifetime.

The long standing Disneyland resort isn't just a set of theme parks: it's a spectacular piece of pop art that's
as bright or as dark as you'd like it to be. Incorporating two parks—the 50-year-old, near-mythic Disneyland,
plus the younger and less-celebrated Disney's California Adventure.

Te resort calls itself "The Happiest Place on Earth." And if you bring the right mood with you, it'll likely live up
to its nickname.

Disneyland
The original Magic Kingdom is packed with must-do
attractions spread over seven 'lands,' all
                                                           immaculately themed in every detail.

                                                           Main Street USA embodies turn-of-the-19th-century
America, while Frontierland takes on Westward
expansion (the John Wayne version) and New
Orleans Square is just like its namesake, only
without the floods, the poverty and the booze.
Adventureland offers thrills of the jungle variety.

Tomorrowland is a kitschily charming look into the future; Critter Country is the wooded home of Winnie the
Pooh and Brer Rabbit; and Fantasyland is where Disney's animated films come to life. As for the iconic mouse,
you're most likely to find him scurrying about with his pals in Mickey's Toontown.

The secret of Disneyland's charm lies in its special history. Unlike the company's other parks, Disneyland was
largely designed by Walt himself, and it's the only one in which he ever set foot. As a result, Disneyland is
practically a biography of its creator's life, if you know where to look. Try reading the names in Main Street's
upper-level windows; you'll find many of Disney's collaborators and artists listed.

The Walt Disney Story features artifacts from Disney's entertainment career. And in Frontierland, you'll find
the petrified tree Walt once gave his wife as an anniversary present.

But most people, of course, are here for the rides.

Among the best are Space Mountain (located in
                                                           Tomorrowland), a legitimately thrilling indoor
rollercoaster ride through 'deep space’. The epic
Indiana Jones Adventure (in Adventureland), based
                                                           on the Spielberg adventure movies.
Pirates of the Caribbean (in New Orleans Square),
the basis for the hit Johnny Depp film franchise and
one of the most detail-packed and atmospheric rides
in the park and the Matterhorn (in Fantasyland), a
breakneck bobsled ride around and through a scaled-
down replica of the Swiss peak.

If anything defines Disneyland, it's the human touch
that's so obviously been lavished on many of its
                                                           featured rides and attractions.

Certainly, it's difficult to imagine anything as charming
as the It's a Small World boat ride (you'll be singing
the theme song for weeks afterwards, whether you
want to or not) or the fabulous Enchanted Tiki

Disney's California Adventure
Located in a former car park, this decent little
enterprise is no match for Disneyland in terms of size
or attention to detail, but it does a decent job of
celebrating the geography, culture and history of its
namesake state. Also, unlike Disneyland, it serves
alcohol, and has done so since opening day.

In 2007, a $1.1-billion renovation of the park was
begun, which led to a grand reopening in June 2012.

built in a Disney park. Not every ride is suitable for
kids of all ages, but very young children are welcome
                                                       in A Bug's Land.

Though the rides lack both Disneyland's charm and the sheer terror inspired by Six Flags Magic Mountain,
Universal Studios Hollywood's hillside theme park offers some worthwhile thrills fueled by silver-screen
memories and an illusion of Hollywood glamour.

Free things to do in L.A.
The list of things to do in Los Angeles is as long as the city is vast. If your time in town is limited, you could spend
days in the city’s essential museums alone and never even make your way to Hollywood. Expect to put in a few
miles between beaching it in Santa Monica and exploring Runyan Canyon, but that’s the great thing about this city:
there are so many things to do and see, plus you don’t have to spend money at all of them. Here are a few
excellent attractions that are free.

The Griffith Observatory sits on the south-facing slope
of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. It
commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including
Downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to
the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest.

The observatory is a popular tourist attraction with a close

space and science-related displays. Admission has been
free in accordance with the will of Griffith J. Griffith, the

Runyon Canyon Park is a 160-acre (65 ha) park at
the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains.

The Runyon Canyon Road, a fire road that is closed to
public motor vehicle access, runs roughly through the
centre of the park between the northern and southern
entrances along Runyon Canyon itself, and there are
numerous smaller hiking trails throughout the park.

The highest point in the park at an elevation of 1,320 ft
(402 m) is known as Indian Rock. Because of its
proximity to residential areas of Hollywood and the
Hollywood Hills, celebrity sightings are common.

also contains some of the finest works of art in the
world. Here you'll find Renaissance paintings, 20th-
century American photography, Baroque sculptures,
historic manuscripts and more, all housed inside a
sprawling, modern campus amid the Santa Monica
Mountains. The museum also offers spectacular views
of Los Angeles on clear days.

We would suggest taking a guided tour as these tours
highlight interesting parts of the museum you wouldn't
have stumbled upon on your own. Tours of the Getty
Center's architecture and gardens are available, as
well as a Collection Highlights tour and tours of art in
specific eras.

The Original Farmers Market, sitting south of West
Hollywood is one of LA's most beloved landmarks:
Founded in 1934, this cream-coloured facility reels in
both residents and tourists with the promise of fresh
produce and the aroma of ready-to-eat snacks. The
tasty dishes sold by many of the prepared food vendors
make it a must-see spot

You can visit throughout the week, although hours vary
depending on the day. Entry is free, but you'll want to
have some cash on hand should any of the treats whet
your appetite. You can park for free for up to 90
minutes at the market's two lots, provided that your
ticket is validated at the market. (Fees apply for parking
after the allotted 90 minutes and for non-validated
tickets.) For a little help navigating the market, you can
also take a guided foodie tour.

LA Beaches
The city’s strategic location on a broad basin in the southern end of the state makes it affluent in all things natural
– mountains, forests, valleys, and of course the strikingly beautiful beaches along the Pacific. Here are some not
to be missed.

Venice Beach has long been known as the kooky

Some other streets to visit are:

Robertson Boulevard: Fashion mavens flock to Robertson’s big-name stores the way surfers seek out
legendary SoCal waves. Intermix and Kitson are local boutiques that have perfected the art of catering to
celebrity clients right alongside the style-conscious everyman. Some of the best celebrity spotting is at the valet
parking stands. Grab a table at The Ivy's outdoor patio and mingle with Hollywood stars who frequently drop in
on a break from shopping.

La Brea Avenue: Check out the area on La Brea between Beverly Boulevard and West Third. It’s a paradise for
sneaker-obsessed hipsters, stationary enthusiasts and vintage-clothing shoppers who want to find something
their friends don’t already own.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard: Named for the mastermind behind the Venice canals, this legendary street runs
through the heart of Venice and was named "The Coolest Block in America" in 2012 . The shopping is found
between Main Street and North Venice Boulevard. Handmade furniture stores, vintage clothing sellers, surf
shops and bookstores make this area as eclectic as any. A former hangout for artist types and other hipsters, the
area now caters to a clientele that’s in the know yet still a few tax brackets removed from the starving artist
stage.

Montana Avenue: Estimates put the number of shops at more than 150 along this well-known street in Santa
Monica. That translates to more choices than you can make in a single day. Most of the stores are privately
owned boutiques or designer-label retail outlets selling couture that’s not widely available.

The area is popular among the celebrity set and the well-heeled residents of nearby Brentwood. Situated
between 7th and 17th streets, this shopping district offers block after block of boutiques selling everything from
antiques to wines. In between, shops such as The Blue House and Hemisphere offer home furnishings, and
since you’ll want to stay a while, there are many great places to eat, from cafés to sushi.

Finally, one for Music and Film fans…..

Amoeba Music: The world's largest independent record store with over a million new and used items! Find
every genre of music or movies you're searching for including hard-to-find, collectible and import titles.

The staff consists of highly-knowledgeable record store veterans who make music their lives in one way or

business. Amoeba is also the ultimate source for cinema, with thousands of titles in every genre on DVD, Blu-
ray, VHS, and even Laserdisc! Come by for free weekly live music too!

All-You-Can Eat Restaurants in Los Angeles
There are so many different types of restaurants to choose from in Los Angeles we thought it would be best to
stick with one sort, the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet. The truth is Los Angeles County offers all-you-can-eat specials in
a wide variety of both cuisines and neighbourhoods. From Ethiopian to Japanese, Brazilian to Mexican, the
sheer volume of options will both surprise and entice you.

Heres a few to choose from…

A-Frame, 12565 Washington Blvd
has long been known for their cracklin’ beer can chicken, but the real cracklin’ is in the AYCE fried chicken, which
is only available for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, and dinner on Mondays. Buttermilk battered and fried to a
dangerously dark peppery perfection, the dish comes with two Kogi-esque sauces and directions for maximum
enjoyment. Squeeze the lemon, dip, crunch, and repeat. $15 gets you a bottomless bowl of legs and thighs, an
extra $10 gets you endless Hite beer.

Tandoor-A-India, 8406 Pershing Dr, Playa Del Rey
This is the go-to spot for great Indian food near the beach. Located up on the bluff in Playa del Rey and is
justifiably famous for their Chicken Tikka Masala; other winners include their Samosa appetisers and numerous
variations of Naan cooked in the Tandoor oven. Vegetarians will find plenty of tasty choices, with the Channa
Masala and Aloo Gobi two popular favourites. This classic eatery by the beach has been serving up delicious
Indian fare for decades. Check out Tandoor-A-India's offering of a lunch buffet for about $10, that includes most of
their most popular dishes.

The Smokehouse 4420 Lakeside Dr, Burbank
A staple in Burbank since 1946, they've been serving steaks, seafood, BBQ and their "The World's Greatest Garlic
Bread" to locals, tourists and celebrities since Bob Hope used to stop in for a bite.

The restaurant's Sunday brunch buffet is famous for a good reason, as they offer traditional breakfast items like
crepes, eggs Benedict and omelettes as well as seafood delicacies including crab legs, marinated mussels,
poached salmon, oysters and more. There are carving stations, tables filled with Mexican delights, plenty of that
garlic bread and lots of mouth-watering desserts. Champagne and Mimosas are included in the price of the
brunch, too.

Shakey's PizzaHollywood ,7001 Santa Monica Blvd.
If you are looking for a family-friendly pizza place in Hollywood try Shakeys restaurant which boasts tantalising
food, a low-key welcoming atmosphere, a convenient location and the best all you can eat pizza buffet around.

How can I make a phone call from Los Angeles?
There used to be pay phones in most parking lots, outside supermarkets, etc but they are now very few and far
between as most people have a mobile (cell) phone. California has several laws banning the use of cellphones
(wireless telephones) while behind the wheel.

The first two laws prohibit all drivers from using handheld wireless phones or cellphones and drivers under 18
years old from using hands-free cellphones. A third law bans texting and other wireless device use while driving.

Is smoking prohibited?
What you need to know about the laws on smoking cigarettes (and vaping) in California

In general, vaping and e-cigarettes are now regulated the same as regular cigarettes in California. In California,
you generally must be at least 21 years old to buy any tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, vape juice, etc.

There is an exception for active duty military personnel, who can purchase tobacco products if they are 18 or
older.

Throughout California, you can’t smoke or vape:
  • Inside any bar, restaurant or other enclosed workplace
  • Inside or within 20 feet of any public building, which includes any building owned or occupied by state or
local government, such as a public school, college, or other educational institution
  • In a car when anyone younger than 18 years old is inside (aka child, minor, etc)
  • Near a playground
  • In day care facilities
  • On any form of public transportation, such as a bus, train, subway, etc.

In the city of LA smoking e-cigarettes are regulated just like regular cigarettes), it is prohibited (in addition to the
statewide rules above):
   • within 10 feet of outdoor dining areas and 40 feet of food kiosks, food carts and mobile food trucks.
   • at farmer’s markets
   • on an elevator
   • on a bus, train, subway or other public transportation
   • at any park

Using e-cigarettes is specifically allowed in vape shops.

Smoking or vaping is banned on any LA Metro public transportation, including buses, trains, subways, etc. You
also can’t smoke or vape on a Metro facility or within 20 feet of any entrance, exit, or window of such a facility.
Smoking is banned in all L.A. County parks

In the city of Santa Monica, e-cigs are prohibited:
   • in outdoor dining areas
   • within 20 feet of any building open to the public
   • at bus stops
Health
Medical treatment is expensive and there are no special arrangements for British visitors. There are walk-in
medical clinics all over Los Angeles, but if you need emergency medical assistance during your trip, dial 911 and
ask for an ambulance.

Do not go to an emergency room in Los Angeles for a minor urgent care issue that you can have treated in a
fraction of the time at a walk-in clinic.

Contact your insurance/medical assistance company promptly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.
Some hospitals may ask non US residents to pay a deposit or ‘good faith’ payment upon admittance. Any
requests for funds should be directed to your travel insurance provider in the first instance; you should only pay
the hospital if you are advised to do so by your travel insurance company.

Your level of medical care won’t be affected while your claim is being processed.

Ways to pay for goods and services
Cash: Take foreign currency but make sure to budget correctly or you will be left with no money by the end of
your trip. Make sure you find the best deal before you leave.

Credit card or debit card: Take your credit or debit card, but watch out for foreign usage charges and your
cards getting blocked by your provider.

Prepaid card: These cards can be loaded with cash and spent in shops or withdrawn from ATMs. They only let
you spend the money you have put on the card.

Travellers cheque: They can be converted into dollars in specific locations. To do this, you will need to use your
signature and provide I.D.

Is tipping mandatory?
In Los Angeles, for the most part, restaurateurs that have moved away from traditional tipping are now using a
service charge, adding 18 to 20 percent to the bill.

This allows the restaurant to decide how that charge is split among its employees and avoids laws that prohibit
back-of-house workers sharing in tips.

How can you go online and check your emails?
A great thing is that modern Internet technology gives you a number of ways to get free WiFi in different places.

For many reasons this type of connection is the most preferable for and today you can get it for free, saving
money on your connection and not using the data that your mobile operator will charge you for.

There are loads of places - restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, internet cafe’s etc. where you can access the
internet for free.

How can I send a letter or a postcard?
You can buy stamps in any post office and many supermarkets in California. Simply find out the cost of mailing
your item(s), stick a stamp on them and drop them in a mail box!

Most hotels will also let you drop off your mail at the reception.
