What lies in store for 2019?
Four intense years of commemorations are now behind us. Both
low-scale commemorations and major events placed our city in the
spotlights. Now these great commemorations are over, Ypres can
regain its composure. We continue to look back to the past in and
around the city, but also look ahead to the future.

Ypres received the label of ‘City of Peace’ after the papal visit of
1985. We want to promote this even more now: a tolerant city where
history is our basis for the future. A future for all people: families with
children, people in motion who still want to reflect on all the beauty
our region has to offer. Walking and cycling through the green rolling
                                                          landscape that breathes serenity.

Last Post
Every evening at 8 pm precisely, the “Last Post” has been sounded
since 1928 under the imposing arches of the Menin Gate. After the
First World War, various grateful citizens decided to create the Last
Post Association. From January 1 to December 31 and in all weather
conditions the buglers of the Last Post Association play the “Last Post”.
On 11 November at 11 am a special Last Post ceremony takes place to
commemorate Armistice.

The Last Post Association has been organising two remembrance

the Ypres Cloth Hall and Belfry were recognised
in the 13th century as being one of the most

to survive the destruction during the war.
The Donkerpoort is also a prime example of

St. Martin’s Cathedral
The cathedral is a former Episcopal church in Gothic style
reconstructed after the First World War. Bishop Jansenius and Count
Robert of Bethune, the ‘Lion of Flanders’, lie buried here. Cornelius
Jansenius is the most famous Bishop of Ypres. His main work,
‘Augustinus’ remained unpublished until 1640, two years after his
death. Jansenius wrote there that only God can have pity on our souls.
Christians cannot save their souls themselves and may not “purchase”
them by way of indulgences. The work by the Bishop of Ypres was
condemned in 1642, mainly because of the influence of the Jesuits.
The work was finally judged to be heretical and was prohibited by
the Pope. Robrecht van Béthune passed away on 17 September 1322.
He is the only Flemish count to be buried in Ypres, in deference to his
express wish. He still enjoys the reputation of having been a popular
and good-natured count, who fought for the independence of the
cities and of Flanders, his county. The cathedral has a beautiful side
altar with an altarpiece and the miracle statue of Our Lady of Thuyne.

The cathedral is open to the public but not during services. The
100-metre tower is not open to the public. The Lapidarium next to the
cathedral contains the older ruins of St. Martine’s deanery. One of the
few remaining ruins in the city centre, the lapidarium is a permanent
reminder of the destruction caused by the First World War. The death
in 1937 of the city architect Jules Coomans may be one of the reasons
why this monastery has not been rebuilt.

The beautifully restored and huge painting by Joris Liebaert hangs in an aisle of the cathedral. It illustrates the stormy period of the Siege of Ypres
in 1383 when the population of Ghent and the English fought over Ypres. The population of Ypres then invoked H. Mary for mercy. Apparently their
prayers were heard because the siege was stopped. That was the origin of the worship of Our Lady of Thuyne. 3

Menin Gate
This memorial in the form of a Roman
triumphal arch displays the names of
54,896 soldiers of the then British Empire
who went missing in action. This memorial
lists the names from the beginning of the
war until 15 August 1917. Soldiers reported
missing after 16 August 1917 until the end
of the war are mentioned on panels at
Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendaele. There
are 34,984 of them. The Menin Gate was
inaugurated on 24 July 1927 by Herbert
Plumer. The site of the Menin Gate was
occupied for centuries by another gate
that had different names throughout
history. The gate was originally called the
Hangwaertpoort and subsequently renamed
Antwerp Gate. When Sébastien Le Prestre
de Vauban established the ramparts in the
17th century, the gate was transformed,
assuming a classical appearance with
distinct Doric qualities. Napoleon paid a
visit to the city on 8 July 1803, whereupon
the gate was called the Napoleon Gate. In
1815 it was given its present name: Menin
Gate. It was demolished in 1862 and this
entrance was no more than 13 metres wide
in the ramparts.

During the First World War the British
troops marched through this “gate” to
defend the “Ypres Salient”. 8

Every evening at 8 o’clock the Last
Post is sounded under the Menin
Gate by buglers from the Last Post

Saint-George’s
Memorial Church
This Anglican church was built in 1928-29 following the plans of
London architect Sir Reginald Blomfield. This “Memorial Church”
holds many reminders of the First World War. Everything down
to the furniture was donated by British associations, regiments or
individuals. After the Menin Gate, it is the most important monument
for the fallen in Ypres centre. The church is open to the public daily.
Next to the church is Eton School, which was built after WWI. For
several years this has catered for the children of British workers

The ammunition dump dates back to 1817 and was built on the
foundations of a former French ammunition dump by the army of the

restored in 1998. The ammunition dump marks the end of the ramparts

Housed in a ‘hotel’ dating back to 1774, the Hotel-
Museum Merghelynck was designed by Lille architect
Thomas Gombert in a transition style from rococo to
neoclassicism. After the First World War this mansion
house was faithfully restored. The Hotel-Museum
Merghelynck is probably Ypres’ least known, but
probably most exceptional museum. This is where
Arthur Merghelynck opened his private museum in
1894, dedicated to the lifestyle of the nobility in the
18th century.

After years of renovation work, the rooms and
lounges of the Merghelynck Museum are restored to
their former glory. The magnificent restoration of the
different rooms and furniture will be exposed again.
The museum can only be visited with a guide on
reservation. 15

De Palingbeek provincial estate is located 5
kilometres from Ypres, in the centre of the hilly
Ypres Salient. The property takes its name from a
stream that flows into the Oude Vaart (Old Canal).

Every visit to this green oasis is surprisingly
different, with opportunities to discover natural
wonders, landscapes steeped in history, the
higher realms of the AstroLAB IRIS observatory or
the hustle and bustle of the environmental farm.

The green area around the Oude Vaart was
developed into a spacious 250-hectare estate. As
a result of this expansion this area is now home
to a wealth of plant and animal life. Extensive
signposted hiking trails lead you to the most
beautiful spots. There is a large café for a quick
bite or a larger dinner. The Bluff, Caterpillar and
Hill 60 have been drastically modified against
the background of the WWI commemoration
activities. At this ‘South entry point’ you can see
a thought-provoking cinematic insight into the
formation of the southern Ypres Salient from Hill
60 to Sint-Elooi. Pay a trip to Information Centre
De Palingbeek to discover the estate’s rich past.
The environmental farm’s vegetable garden has
          become an authentic closed-loop system.

Ypres drinks...
Ypres is part of the Westhoek and the Westhoek is
synonymous with plenty of regional beer.
Under the title Tournée Locale, Beer experience in the
Westhoek, the region wants to profile as a real beer
region. Our beers are made with local hops. Hop farmers
and hop plants around Poperinge characterise the local
landscape and provide the golden basic product.
