WHY ISEP? YOUR PATH TO THE WORLD IS NOW OPEN. Over the past 40 years, ISEP has helped more than 60,000 students access the life-changing experience of study abroad. We believe study abroad should be for anyone who wants it. In fact, we’ve made that our mission. As a non-profit organization, our first job is to break down barriers to make study abroad accessible and affordable for all. • We offer an impressive and affordable array of programs among a global community of nearly 350 universities and colleges in more than 50 countries. • That means you can go just about anywhere to study, from full-year, to semester-long, to summer programs, service learning, and even internships. • With ISEP Exchange programs, you can go abroad at the same cost as your home university’s tuition, housing and meal plan. Any scholarships, grants or financial aid you receive will apply. • Our ISEP Direct programs are often the best value available, offering lower costs than other options, guaranteed placement at your university of choice, and a thoughtfully customized experience. • Whether you participate in a study, intern, or volunteer abroad program, ISEP ensures you get all the support you need. 4 | I S E P. O R G
BEYOND ACCESS: THE AUTHENTIC STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE It’s one thing to enable access to study abroad. It’s another to provide an experience that’s immersive and life changing. And that’s exactly what we do at ISEP. • We believe there is enormous value for students to live like a local, and fully engage with another culture. • Time and again, our students report that ISEP programs helped them gain cross- cultural understanding and respect for others. • As a result, ISEP students develop highly desirable skills for life, and for future employment. From an openness to people and new ideas, to greater flexibility, problem solving, and the ability to communicate in the workplace. • Most importantly, students gain a transformative self-confidence that can only come from such an authentic experience. At ISEP, we believe the core challenge for young people is to find out who they are and where they want to go in life. The opportunity and experience that ISEP’s study, intern and volunteer abroad programs provide clarifies this process of personal identity, while providing a rich academic and cross-cultural experience. STUDYING IN THE U.S. Studying in the U.S. can help perfect your English skills, strengthen your resume and expose you to a range of academic topics in one of the world’s finest university systems. While on your host campus, take advantage of the unique opportunities outside of class and participate in student organizations or sports teams. You also get the chance to experience beautiful landscapes and welcoming, friendly locals and people from all over the world. Discover charming small towns, vibrant cities and join a diverse and inclusive culture. STUDYING IN THE UNITED STATES UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS • Undergraduates are students in the U.S. in their first four years of university pursuing a bachelor’s of arts or bachelor’s of science degree. Most undergraduate programs are flexible, allowing students to choose a variety of courses and create their own unique program of study. • In addition to major requirements, students take courses in a variety of disciplines. Professional programs such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary science and law are offered at the graduate level only, although undergraduates take ‘pre-med’ or ‘pre-law’ courses to prepare for further study. GRADUATE STUDENTS • Graduate programs are specialized and lead to a master’s degree or a doctoral degree. Admission to graduate study usually requires four years of undergraduate study but may be possible after three years. ISEP graduate students are usually admitted as ‘special’ or ‘non- degree’ students and take undergraduate courses. Qualified students may be able to take graduate courses. APPLYING TO GRADUATE COURSES Test scores may be required, such as GMAT for business and GRE for other subjects. TOEFL requirements may be higher. Some classes are open to final-year undergraduates and first-year graduate students. Some sites may allow you to pursue a full graduate degree. Any major that requires direct clinical patient contact (physical therapy, psychological counseling, dentistry, medicine) is closed to non-degree students. Instead, non-degree graduate students are advised to take courses in related fields (health and sciences) not involving direct clinical patient contact. 18 | I S E P. O R G
PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE - HOW TO CHOOSE WHERE TO GO Rather than a single national system of higher education, each U.S. state is responsible for the regulation of its institutions of higher learning. The two main types of institutions are public or state universities, and private or independent colleges and universities. These types of institutions can vary considerably. PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES PRIVATE COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES • Usually enroll over 10,000 students • Usually enroll less than 10,000 students • Attract a large number of in-state residents, due to in-state • Attract more out-of-state students; greater geographic tuition incentives diversity • Offer a choice of majors in a variety of disciplines • Offer a smaller range of majors, but often have a particular • Larger class sizes, especially for lecture courses academic focus • Diverse student body, strong student community and culture • Smaller class sizes; tend to offer many opportunities for around sports interaction with professors • More on-campus employment options • Intimate student community; formed through on-campus activities ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY ISEP institutions in the United States require proof of English language proficiency from students who are not native English speakers. For Puerto Rico, students must provide proof of both English and Spanish language proficiency. Most institutions in the U.S. require an official TOEFL score, but some may accept Institutional TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, Cambridge certificate or SAT scores. Some U.S. institutions may accept the ISEP Language Proficiency Report in lieu of TOEFL scores, especially for students from educa- tional systems that require a high level of English proficiency, including: Austria, Belgium, Botswana, Bulgaria, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Malta, Netherlands, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland or United Arab Emirates. TOEFL If the TOEFL is required by the sites on your application, we must receive the official copy of your TOEFL before placement can be finalized. WHEN DO I TAKE THE TOEFL? • To be considered in the ISEP Exchange placement round starting February 15, you should take the TOEFL test by January 1. • For applications due on September 1, take the test by July 15. WHERE DO I SEND MY TOEFL RESULTS? • Results must be sent directly to ISEP from ETS. • If you take the paper or internet-based test, list ISEP’s TOEFL number: 9250. For computer-based tests, choose Virginia and ISEP. WHICH PROGRAMS OFFER ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE COURSES? • ISEP Direct programs in the United States offer full-time ESL courses. • Some ISEP Exchange programs offer some ESL support courses in addition to regular academic coursework, but are not designed for students who wish to take full-time ESL courses.
