DIRECTOR’S CHAIR Dear Friends, It has been 7 years since I have been able write an opening letter in this publication and boast about a wonderful winter. Mother Nature brought us an early Christmas present in mid-December with a beautiful blanket of snow almost a foot deep. There is nothing like early snow to get ski enthusiasts excited. The snow was washed away on Christmas Eve, but returned on February 1st and we had almost the entire month of winter activities. The cold temperatures and recurring snowfalls have made for the best skiing in close to a decade. The ski center certainly looked different this year with service windows, limited access to the hall, and outside delivery of equipment due to COVID-19. However, those changes didn’t stop people from coming out in droves to ski, snowshoe, and sled. The pandemic continues to affect the way we do business and all of our daily lives. Positivity rates spiked around the holidays, but fortunately numbers have come down since then. The State is talking about loosening some of the restrictions in mid-March which will be a boost for everyone. The distribu- tion of the vaccine is also helping the overall situation as more and more people receive it. One of the positive things out of this mess is that we have seen a staggering amount of interest in our programs. Historically, our fall and winter programs are not well attended but that has certainly changed this year with almost every program filling. It has been great to see so many of you at the park taking full advantage of your facility and programs. Planning programs for the next 6 months is challenging during this time. As the staff began to discuss the calendar, we were constantly wondering what the State guidelines may be and how we could safely run programs and accommodate this increase in demand. Things are constantly changing but we know for sure that all programs will require preregistration and there will be limits. We will be delaying regis- tration on many programs to allow for what we hope will be increased capacity limits. Please be patient as we roll these programs out and be sure to watch your email and our website for the latest information. The question of capacity at the beach and guests being allowed for the summer is still unanswered. We would like to operate as normal as possible, but all those answers will depend on the virus, positivity rates, and state guidelines. We are hopeful things will continue to improve. In this newsletter you will find an article on our plans to replace the Dunning Lake playground. We started plans on this exciting project last year and temporarily put things on hold with the pan- demic. This project is part of the 10-Year Dunning Lake Master Plan and will involve replacing our two aging playscapes at the beach with the latest in play equipment for your children. Communication and illustrations on this project will be distributed throughout the year, along with opportunities for you to provide support. On behalf of our staff and the Board of Directors, I want to thank you for your support of this organization. The past 12 months have been hard on everyone. From time out of school and vacations missed, to loss of income and the death of loved ones, it has been rough all around. What this year has shown us is that people care, and hope is not lost. Things are improving and Winding Trails will continue to be a space where you can relax, refuel the soul, and enjoy family and friends. We look forward to continuing to serve you. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Scott Brown, CPRP Executive Director 2 SPRING/SUMMER NEWSLETTER

TRAILS TALK A New Playground for W hat is your favorite memory of playing on the playground looking out on Dunning Lake? Was it as a child when your family was at the beach? Was it bringing your children for play dates with friends they still are close with today? Was it bringing your grandchildren and seeing them play and laugh the way their parents did when you brought them as kids? The playground has been a focal point of the beach for over thirty years. When it made its debut in 1986, it was considered an advanced playground with unique features and play options that could not be found at any other playground in the region. There are surely some who will remember Winding Trails first full time Camp Director and now Executive Director Scott Brown using tools given to him as a wedding present to help build the playground with the help and support of volunteers. As we continue to make progress on our 10-Year Dunning Lake Master Plan, we will focus on the playground and plans to replace it with a new playground that will again provide unique features and play options that won't be found in any other playground in the area. But we need your help. The original playground cost about $30,000 and proved to be a great investment. The budget for its replacement is in the $300,000 range. We know, that is a lot of money. To achieve this goal, we depend on the generosity of members to support and make possible the new playground. This year we will have a separate appeal in support of the new playground that will go out in early summer and hope you will consider making a donation. We will also host some fundraising events that will provide opportunities for us to have a good time while sup- porting this great cause. In the coming months, we will be communicating more about our playground plans and how you can help! Playground design, function and quality have come a long way in the last 30 years. Staff, Board Members, and focus groups have been engaged in assessing options and value to be sure we are well positioned to get the same benefit for this playground that we did with the current one. Along the way and researchers have linked physical, social, and emotional there have been countless examples reinforcing the impor- skills to playgrounds and free-unstructured play. FAMILY PROGRAMS AND SPECIAL EVENTS FAMILIES EXPLORING NATURE This spring and summer, families with older children will join Miss Judy for a fun Saturday afternoon of learning some- thing new about the great outdoors. The program format is an introduction about the day’s topic followed by a hands-on outdoor activity to try out what you learned. Dress for the weather with appropriate shoes or boots. Each month, we will be exploring different locations as we discover the many animals and plants that make up Winding Trails’ fields, forests, and waterbodies. Look and listen for wood frogs in the vernal pools. Learn about wildflowers and the animals that visit them. Discover the birds that nest and raise their young here.
