PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE The Feast of Christ the King, November 25, 2018 Christ the King: Α & Ω Today is the last Sunday of the church’s liturgical year and we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. We conclude the liturgical year acknowledging Christ as the King of the uni- verse. This is He whose kingdom is not of this world and whose kingdom will last forever. This king is the one who came to witness to the truth as we read in the gospel today: “You say I am king. For this, I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth” (John 18:37). One of the rites of Easter vigil is the preparation of the Easter candle. The priest traces the first and the last Greek letters on the candle, a sign that Jesus the light of the world, is the Alpha (Α) and Omega (Ω); the beginning and end of our faith; the first and the last. Jesus is the one who is ever constant and present in the world. He is the truth and the life. Truth is always constant. In today’s gospel, Pilate was face to face with Jesus who without any royal regalia had the aura of a king around him. Pilate wanted to know if Jesus was a king. Jesus acknowledged that he is a king but his kingdom is not of this world and that his kingdom belongs to all who recognize the truth and witness to it. Jesus said he came to testify to the truth. This is what the feast of today is all about: witnessing to the truth. Integrity is what the world needs. Jesus whom we are called to follow was not bent on being popular but rather living a life of integrity. Jesus is the beginning and the end. He is also the one in the middle and indeed everywhere all the way. Do we ac- knowledge him only during special feasts of the year and neglect him in our everyday life? Or do we acknowledge him even in those turbulent periods of our lives? To testify to the truth, we must experience the truth in our everyday lives. When I think of a man of integrity, my mind goes to St. Thomas More also. He was a strong man who was ready to die in order to preserve his integrity. He did not succumb to the threats of King Henry VIII of England but stood firm in the faith of the Church. The end of this liturgical year brings us to the beginning of another one next Sunday. As we start a new liturgical year next Sunday, let us call on Jesus the King of all hearts to help us to be men and women of truth and integrity all year round. Campaign Commitment Sunday: I have witnessed some incredible enthusiasm for the case of this campaign during our receptions, and I just want to thank all those parishioners who attended one of the receptions that we held. I am grate- ful also to those who have already made a pledge towards the campaign. Next Sunday is designated as Commitment Sunday of our Capital Campaign. If you were not able to attend any of the receptions, we mailed your campaign packet to you this past week. We need every parishioner to make a commitment to this campaign. We are asking for equal sacrifice, not equal giving, knowing that everyone cannot give equal monetary donations for this campaign. Please prayerfully consider the pledge you are making for this campaign and do so this week. Together we work to improve our home church, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church and School. No one should wait for others to do it, each of us must make our own contributions to continue to build on the foundations laid by those who were here before us. Thank you again for your generosity. CHILDREN’S NEWS | ADULT FORMATION CCE is in session today, Sunday, November 25, Tuesday, November 27, and Wednesday, November 28. Visit the Elementary portion of the parish website for lots of important information and fun extras: http://www.st-mm.com/elementary. We continue Big Idea Two: How do we get to know and love Jesus Christ? Our topics include Sacraments, Prayer, and Mass & Our Responses. Please help your children to understand how we encounter Jesus in the sacraments, in prayer, and especially in the Mass. When we encounter Him, we come to know, love, and serve Him in this world for eternal happiness in the next. Breaking Open the Word for Families for The Solemnity of Christ the King By Ginger Herrington Reading 1: Daniel 7:13-14. Daniel saw the Son of Man coming on the clouds of Heaven. 600 years before Jesus was born, the prophet Daniel was inspired by the Holy Spirit with dreams and visions. He foretold the coming of Jesus, the Son of Man, Who received from the Ancient of Days do- minion, glory, and kingship which would never be taken away or destroyed. We profess Daniel’s prophecy each Sunday in our Nicene Creed: He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom shall have no end. Reading 2: From the Book of Revelations 1:5-8. Jesus Christ is coming amid the clouds. Jesus Christ, the “faithful witness, the ruler of the kings of the Earth,” loves us and has freed us from slavery to sin and death by His death and Resurrection. At the end of time, we all will rise; this is called the “general resurrection.” Some will rise to glory for their love of God; some will rise to eternal damnation if they reject God. The Lord God is the One “who was and is and is to come.” He is the beginning(Alpha) and the end (Omega). Gospel: John 18:33b-37. Pilate asked Jesus if He was the King of the Jews. Jesus confirmed that He was, indeed, a king, but that His kingdom was “not of this world.” Jesus is King not only of the Jews, but He is the King of the Universe, the solemn feast we celebrate today. Hear the Word of the Lord; He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life for all Who hearken to His voice. Friday, November 30 is the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle. St. Andrew is referred to in the Eastern churches as the “First Called” because he was the first to respond to Jesus. When John the Baptist pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God and instructed his disciples to follow Him, Andrew went after Jesus immediately. Andrew introduced Jesus to his brother, St. (Simon) Peter. Although brothers, Simon has a Hebrew name and Andrew has a Greek name, reflecting the Galilean culture made up of Greeks and Jews. Andrew brought the boy with the fishes and loaves to Jesus; and Andrew and Philip arranged a meeting with Jesus and a group of Greeks who wanted to meet Him. After Jesus’ Ascension into Heaven and after Pentecost, Andrew evangelized the Greek part of the world; he was crucified in Patras, in Greece, on an X-shaped cross which we now call “St. Andrew’s cross.” Andrew called the cross “a gift,” as by means of the cross, Andrew imitates his Master, Jesus Christ and will confidently meet Him in Heaven. Lord, grant us the grace to view our crosses as gifts by which we marry our sufferings to Yours and by which we meet You. St. Andrew, apostle of Christ, pray for us! Less than 20 years later, 9 million of the inhabitants of the land, who professed for centuries a polytheistic and human sacri- ficing religion, are converted to Christianity. What happened in those times that produced such an incredible and historically unprecedented conversion? In 1531 a "Lady from Heaven" appeared to a humble Native American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself as the ever virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and the earth. She made a request for a church to be built on the site, and submitted her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested her for a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or question to the Church's local Bishop, and sent her native messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop. After complying to the Bishop's request for a sign, She also left for us an image of herself imprinted miraculously on the native's tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years but shows no sign of decay 476 years later and still defies all scientific explana- tions of its origin. It apparently even reflects in Her eyes what was in front of her in 1531. Her message of love and compassion, and her universal promise of help and protection to all mankind, as well as the story of the apparitions, are described in the "Nican Mopohua", a 16th-century document written in the native Nahuatl language. There is a reason to believe that at Tepeyac Mary came in her glorified body, and her actual physical hands rearranged the roses in Juan Diego’s tilma, which makes this apparition very special. An incredible list of miracles, cures and interventions are attributed to Her. Yearly, between 18 - 20 million pilgrims visit the Basilica, making it Christianity's most visited sanctuary. Altogether 25 popes have officially honored Our Lady of Guadalupe. His Holiness John Paul II visited her Sanctuary four times: on his first apos- tolic trip outside Rome as Pope in 1979, and again in 1990, 1999 and 2002. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12th. In 1999, Pope John Paul II, in his homily from the Solemn Mass at the Ba- silica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, during his third visit to the sanctuary, declared the date of December the 12th as a Liturgical Holy Day for the whole continent. During the same visit, Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to her loving protection and placed under her motherly care the innocent lives of children, especially those who are in danger of not being born. "(Juan 18:37).
