Don’t we get excited when we talk about love? This summer we are going to present a 10-day Virtual Bible School that is centered on God’s Love. Throughout the program, we will introduce to children various aspects of God’s love for humanity with specific reference to believers in Christ. The theme verse for the VBS is “This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” 1 John 4:10 At the end of the VBS, each child will know about: • The diverse ways in which God expresses His most characteristic attribute, love. • How to respond to His love. • How to express love like Him. Each day as we discuss about how God expresses His love, we will also stress on the numerous ways in which it applies to our life. Our various Day Themes are interconnected in the following way: • Generous •Redeeming Love Love • Forgiving Love God's Execution Redemption Plan of the Plan Conveying His Unfathomable Love by sharing the Redemptive plan Our Our Reflection Response of His to His Love Love •Serving Love •Gracious Love •True Love •Chastising •Friendly Love Love •Enduring Love Note: If you observe the picture, you would see that the first two arrows are within the circle and the last two are outside. This denotes that the love of God acts within oneself primarily and then urges us to show His love outwardly.
VBS 2021 PRIMARY About Little Hands Hub Who are we? Little Hands Hub was formed by a group of about 40 people who have spent time together at the Grace Tunes studio. The friendship did not stop with laughter over meals, but extended to Christ-centric discussions and frequent prayer gatherings. Why have we started this initiative? As we were discussing the possibility of conducting a VBS, we came across the passage in Mark where Jesus heals a paralytic man carried to Him by his friends. It says in verse 5 of chapter 2, “Seeing their [the four friends] faith, Jesus said to the paralytic man…” This passage stirred our hearts and minds to think – how can our faith benefit others? Every member had a longing to do something for the Lord. Thus, we prayerfully decided to start a Virtual Bible School (VBS), as we were inspired to work amongst children. What are we going to do? We believe that it is important for the children to know the truth from a very young age. All things taught to children will have a strong impression in their minds and so, they will grow up to live by them. We want to reach out to kids between the age of 5 and 17. Our aim in interacting with them is to teach them truths from the Bible. Also we want to impart real Christian values that are constantly assaulted by the views of the world. We have taken tremendous efforts to make this Virtual Bible school fun yet full of Biblical truths. What is different about our Virtual Bible School? The VBS is entirely virtual (no online conferencing calls) with engaging activities to get children involved. The stories are presented in many different forms such as roleplaying, which makes it easier and enjoyable for children. There wil be games that would help them recall the day’s learnings. Children can post their doubts in an anonymous questionnaire area. The final day will be concluded with a program in which all the efforts put in by the children will be displayed as a video. The progress of each child can be tracked. For a personal touch, a follow-up team is going to contact children on a daily basis during these 10 days. They would answer questions and help children to know the Bible more clearly. Rewards make us work harder – we give certificates to appreciate children’s efforts, and encourage them to learn more. Where do you come in? This initiative does not end when this VBS wraps up. We plan to teach the Biblical truths in a series of VBS sessions in the coming years. We also hope to keep in LITTLE HANDS HUB 2
VBS 2021 PRIMARY touch with every child who is going to attend this Virtual Bible School. To follow children on the VBS days and to further assist them to learn and understand the God’s Word, we need a lot of helping hands. That is where you come in. Help us in following up and opening many young hearts to the love of God. We hope this journey will be beautiful and beneficial for the children as well as for everyone of us. How can you use this handbook? Go through each day’s content intently and share the Word of God in the right way. Now, we will explain about the various headers present in each day’s content. • The teaching objectives given at the beginning of each day are the truths we wish to get across to our children. When you talk to them, make sure they have understood the objectives. • Check if they have learnt the memory verse. If they have not memorized, encourage them to learn the memory verse for each day. • The Bible references are for your meditation and clarification of our objectives. Please read the passages before doing follow-up for each day. • The day theme introduction explains in detail about the objectives enlisted above. • The story shared/enacted in the general session is given for your reference. But we encourage everyone to see the videos before you make follow-up calls. • Cut-outs from real life portray day-to-day situations where our love for God and people are tested. Discuss in detail about these life applications and give children practical insights. • The Group session conclusions, activities during general and group sessions are mentioned here for your immediate reference. But we encourage everyone to see the videos before you make follow-up calls. • We have given few questions in the discussion questions box that might help when you talk to the kids. Some questions will call for self-introspection on the children’s part; do not ask such questions to beginners but rather talk to them in a way that will engage them. “So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 LITTLE HANDS HUB 3
VBS 2021 PRIMARY REDEEMING LOVE DAY 1 Teaching Objectives • God loves us irrespective of our waywardness and He devised a plan to save us. • Realise the sinful state you are in – you are in need of forgiveness. 1.1 Memory Verse: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ROMANS 5:8 1.2 Bible References: Isaiah 53: 4-6; 1 Peter 2:24-25; 1 Peter 1:18-20; Ephesians 1:4-10; Luke 15:3-10; Luke 5: 27-32; Acts 9 1.3 Day theme Introduction: Colour: Pink Fruit: Dragon fruit When Adam and Eve sinned, the whole of humanity fell into the trap of sin. Even while God punished Adam and Eve, He devised a plan to save them (also us) from eternal death [Genesis 3:15]. God is omniscient and has foreknowledge of all the decisions and actions each of us would undertake. In the same way, God knew Adam and Eve would fall and conceived a salvation plan well before they sinned [1 Peter 1:20]. Blood has to be shed for the remittance of sins [Hebrews 9:22]. His plan was to send His only begotten1 Son into this world and make Him the blameless sacrificial Lamb that would blot out our sins [John 3:16; 1 Peter 1:19]. No matter how morally good we may be, we can never match up to the holy standards set by God [Romans 3:23] - We were wanderers and lost sheep before knowing the Risen Saviour. So we have to realise our sinfulness and believe in the sacrifice of Christ so that we might become God’s children [John 1:12]. 1 Begotten – Greek word means monogenes. It pertains to being the only one of its kind or class, unique in kind. John, the writer of the Gospel of John, was primarily concerned with demonstrating that Jesus is the Son of God (John 20:31), and he uses monogenes to highlight Jesus as uniquely God’s Son—sharing the same divine nature as God—as opposed to believers who are God’s sons and daughters by adoption (Ephesians 1:5). Jesus is God’s “one and only” Son. LITTLE HANDS HUB 4
VBS 2021 PRIMARY 1.4 General Session: The Outcast In her very first week as the chaplain of a women's prison in Virginia, Kay Golbeck was introduced to a very hardened, messy, and scarred 35-year-old inmate named Barbara. The prison warden warned Kay about Barbara, calling Barbara hopeless and a repeat offender. Barbara had several scars from her multiple fights and had her skin burnt from chemicals thrown at her. She had even slit the skin of a fellow inmate, just for trying to sit too close to her. But somehow, Kay's heart went out to Barbara, and as a Christian counsellor she wanted to help her in any way possible. Kay tried to strike up a conversation with Barbara when she was sweeping outside Kay's room, but she was greeted with contempt and denial. Upon reading Barbara's records, Kay found out about her broken past, a childhood with no parents, a broken marriage followed by a nasty divorce, and years after years of imprisonment, this time for theft. Barbara's cottage matron also dismissed her as being hopeless, harsh, and destructive, warning Kay to stay away from her as much as possible just to be safe. But Kay felt a deep burden in her heart to love Barbara and to pray for her. She believed that Barbara was like the lost sheep that Jesus sought after. The next day, during Kay's counselling session with Barbara, she tried to tell her about Jesus' love for her and how He died to buy her pardon. Hearing this, Barbara spat on the floor, yelled that she needs no preaching and left the room. Unable to understand how to reach out to Barbara, Kay prayed, "Lord, I give up, I leave her to you." On a hot summer day, as Kay joined the inmates on the lawn for recreation time, she noticed how Barbara had sensitive scarred skin on her throat and neck. Kay realised how the scorching sun must burn her sensitive skin. Remembering that she owns a soft pink silk handkerchief, Kay dashed to her room to find it, along with a couple of gold-coloured pins. Gathering courage, Kay walked straight to Barbara, and asked her if she could help pin up this silk handkerchief around her neck. Even as Barbara starred at Kay with a puzzled look, Kay lovingly pinned the cloth around her neck. Barbara said nothing, but had two drops of tears streaming down her eyes. During their next counselling session, instead of preaching Barbara about salvation, Kay just let her know that she wants to be her friend. Barbara glanced at her warily and asked, "Why?" Kay replied, "Because I know how it is to have no friends." In the following months, the two spent a lot of time discussing their lives, hopes, and disappointments, and Kay also spoke of how Jesus healed her of arthritis. After months of Kay's efforts of love, one night Barbara opened her LITTLE HANDS HUB 5
VBS 2021 PRIMARY heart to the love of Jesus, accepted His redemptive power, and cried her heart out. Kay could see that the vicious hardened criminal in Barbara had died, and in her place was a new creature washed in God’s love. Barbara's life changed and she started doing chores quickly and effectively, started taking educational courses in leisure, and was released soon after complete rehabilitation. Eventually she became the supervisor of all old age homes in a large state. In one of Barbara's letters to Kay, she speaks of how she spreads the hope and love of Jesus to elderly women. Eyes soaked with tears, Kay thanked God for using a simple piece of silk cloth to touch and change a prisoner. Dear children, God loves you the same way, even when you are imperfect. He searches for the lost sheep as Kay went in search of Barbara. He continually comes and approaches us, asking us to turn back to Him – our Maker. In His love, God sent His son to die on the cross for us so that we might be saved from a sinful life. He deliberately paid the price and set us free. He has redeemed us and the only thing you and I have to do is to realise that we are sinful, and accept Jesus Christ as the Savior and Lord of our lives [John 6:29]. 1.5 Cut-outs from Real Life: What is sin? Lying to teachers when they ask for homework, disobeying parents, being dishonest in academics by copying answers, taking others’ stuff without their knowledge, teasing a fellow student for his looks or a child poorer than you – all these are sins. No matter how old you are and how good you may seem to others, we all are sinners. We need a Saviour who would redeem us from our fallen state. Redemption is the act of paying the ransom (price) to set someone free. It can be understood by this example: you buy a parrot by paying quite a lot of money from a pet shop; then you just set it free. This is what Jesus Christ did when He died on the cross for our sins. 1.6 General Activity: Barbara with a Pink scarf; Background – Pink with green scenery 1.7 Group Session: The Parable of Lost Coin (Luke 15:8-10) LITTLE HANDS HUB 6
VBS 2021 PRIMARY 1.8 Group Session Conclusion: In the story, did you see the woman who missed her coin and searched for it everywhere? God searches for us like her. You might ask, why does he search for us? I will say, because we are lost. But how are we lost you may ask? Well let me explain that part! Have you ever told a lie? I know, “You will say yes.” God commanded us not to lie and when we lie, we break his law. Likewise, we break many of God’s commandments every day, even every minute. Every time we break God’s law we sin. Sin keeps us away from God. We cannot go back to God and so we are lost. Only way we could ever go back is when God comes in search of us and takes us back. That’s exactly what Jesus did! 1.9 Group Activity: Treasure Hunt 1. Have you committed any of the sins mentioned today? If not, then what other actions of yours do you think is sin? 2. Have you committed any sins more than once? Do you find it difficult to get over any particular sin? It is not possible to overcome sins by your own strength and willpower. You need the help of God to live a victorious life. LITTLE HANDS HUB 7
VBS 2021 PRIMARY GENEROUS LOVE DAY 2 Teaching Objectives • God saved us by giving His only Son; this Gift is generous. • Be a generous dispenser of His mercy and love. • Be ready to give rather than receive. 2.1 Memory Verse: “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” HEBREWS 13:16 2.2 Bible References: John 3:16; Romans 8:32; James 1:5; Mark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4; 1 Kings 17:7-16; Genesis 42:1-26; Genesis 13 2.3 Day theme Introduction: Colour: Purple Fruit: Grape We saw in the previous day about God’s plan of saving us from eternal damnation and hell. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. This gift of God is lavish and selfless. God showed His love by generously giving Jesus and we have to follow the example. God also gives us other things bountifully – wisdom, food, shelter, etc. 2.4 General Session: Mother Teresa In the streets of Bengal, she was walking under the scorching heat of the sun. There was nothing left for her children to eat. The orphanage could not provide food to so many children. There was one shop nearby. She went and implored the shopkeeper to give her something for the hapless children. She held out her hand, pinning her hopes on him. She needed to give food to her children or else they would die of starvation. The shopkeeper simply spat on her hand denying her any food. She quietly wiped her hand on the edge of her sari and held out her other hand. She spoke in an even, low voice, “I am grateful to you for what you have given me. I now request you not to spit on the other hand and give something for the children.” The LITTLE HANDS HUB 8
VBS 2021 PRIMARY shopkeeper was astonished by her modesty. He was speechless. He asked for her pardon. This incident was an eye opener for him. He then started contributing a lot for the welfare of the children. This lady dressed in a white sari with a blue border was none other than ‘The Saint of the Gutters, Mother Teresa.’ This nun fought against all odds and opened a hospital in Kolkata named Nirmal Hriday, which was the home for the dying. During those times, leprosy was thought to be contagious in India. So, once any family member caught the disease, he/she was kicked out of the house and left to their fate. The road was flooded due to heavy rains. There was an old lady suffering from leprosy. Mother Teresa picked up the lady in her arms and started running towards a nearby hospital. The hospital was not ready to accept her. She picked her up and started running to another hospital. Unfortunately, the woman died on the way. Mother Teresa felt very sorry for the woman. She felt the need of a hospital to care for the dying. This led to the establishment of the hospital. In 1950, Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation. In 2012, it had over 4,500 nuns and was active in 133 countries. The congregation manages homes for people who are dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. It also runs soup kitchens, dispensaries, mobile clinics, children and family counselling programmes, as well as orphanages and schools. Members take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, and also profess a fourth vow – to give wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor. Mother Teresa, in all aspects of her life, was a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded. She spent her entire life looking after the poor and the downtrodden. 2.7 Cut-outs from Real Life: Have you come across students who asked you for an eraser, lost it and asked you again? How have you reacted in such situations? Did you give generously or LITTLE HANDS HUB 9
VBS 2021 PRIMARY grudgingly and did not help thereafter? God always provides us with enough to share. Be generous in your giving, even if it is as small as an eraser or pencil. 2.6 General Activity: Mother Teresa on a Sunny Day; Background – Purple with a sun and red crosses 2.7 Group Session: The widow of Zarephath and Elijah (1 Kings 17:8-16) 2.8 Group Session Conclusion: The woman gave the little she had to Elijah and God kept all three of them from dying through the famine. Giving will be easy when we have a lot or when we don’t want what we are giving anymore. Sharing when we have very little is difficult. It is even more difficult when we have to give everything we have. We give because God gave us a priceless gift, Jesus Christ! We must be able to give to God and others generously and sacrificially. We can give our time. We could give the money we store in our piggy bank. We can give our talents to God. 2.9 Group Activity: Giving Neighbours a Verse Card and a Gift 1. Have you ever given generously like Mother Teresa? Talk about such an incident. 2. What are the things you can generously give for God? LITTLE HANDS HUB 10
VBS 2021 PRIMARY FORGIVING LOVE DAY 3 Teaching Objectives • God forgives and remembers our sins no more. • We have to forgive others even when they are not sorry. 3.1 Memory Verse: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” EPHESIANS 4:32 3.2 Bible Reference: Romans 4:6-8; Psalm 103:12; Isaiah 38:17; Luke 15:11-24; Genesis 45:1-15; Genesis 50:15-21; Matthew 18:21-35; John 8:1-11 3.3 Day theme Introduction: Colour: Red Fruit: Strawberry When we realize our sinfulness and our inability to make us right with God, we surrender ourselves at His feet. Thus, we become children of God by believing in the sacrifice of Christ and asking God to forgive our sins. When we confess our sins, He is just to forgive us [1 John 1:9]. By saying God remembers our sins no more, we mean that He would not use our sins against us anymore. In this same way, we are to forgive others and not use their mistakes against them. Even if the other person is wrong and unwilling to talk to you, you should take the first steps for reconciliation. 3.4 General Session: The Power of Forgiveness As a 11-year-old boy Didier witnessed the killing of his mother, a street vendor. Didier was next to his mom when he saw her drop dead after taking 38 bullet shots. As a reaction to his mom's killing, Didier went down a self-destructive path and embraced a life of drugs, alcohol and crime for four years. “In drugs and alcohol, I LITTLE HANDS HUB 11
VBS 2021 PRIMARY looked for the love that was taken away from me with the assassination of my mother,” he pointed out. In those years, Didier was also thinking about retaliation and vengeance. People in the neighborhood told him who the killer of his mom was. He was not living far away from Didier’s home. Planning his vengeance, Didier started collecting guns and even two grenades in his room. At night, he would cry and think of how he would kill his mother’s assassin, but he never found the courage to do so. The opportunity for change arrived when a friend, belonging to a Christian church, approached Didier. Didier was skeptical and dismissive at first but eventually accepted the words and the invitation of his friend. As he was realizing that the hatred he was harboring in his heart was consuming his soul and was killing him, he found the strength and the courage to forgive the man who killed his mom. One day, Didier saw the killer sitting on the street curb. He joined him, sat next to him and asked him why he had killed his mother. The man broke down sobbing. Those tears were, for Didier, the confirmation that the man was the one who shot his mother to death. Sometime later, Didier ran into the man again. He went up to him and told him, “I don’t know why you killed my mother, but I forgive you.” Didier embraced the man, and the guy once again broke down in sobs. Only recently Didier discovered that it was indeed someone else had killed his mother. He learned it from a friend, who inquired if Didier had indeed forgiven his mother’s assassin. When he was assured, Didier’s friend confessed to him, “My brother killed your mother.” Since then, Didier has been trying to find the whereabouts of the killer, because he learned that he is facing troubles. “I want to give him my forgiveness, and try to help him,” said Didier. For the past few years, Didier has been helping other young people who are facing trouble and problems. A source of hope and wisdom for many. He says, “If I was able to change and to forgive, then others can do so as well.” 3.5 Cut-outs from Real Life: Imagine the time you fought with your friends; you spoke in anger and your friend was no better, he/she hurled angry words at you too. Both of you decided never to talk with each other. At a time like that, what do you think Jesus would do? Should you not take the first steps for reconciling? It doesn’t matter if you were not in the wrong, it is always important to show love instead of hate. Forgive even when others aren’t sorry for what they did. When you forgive others, you can talk and get along like you did before. Even when they aren’t willing to be your friends again, your love can change them. LITTLE HANDS HUB 12
VBS 2021 PRIMARY 3.6 General Activity: Small Didier in a Red Shirt; Background – Red with white polka dots 3.7 Group Session: Joseph forgives his brothers (Genesis 45:1-15; Genesis 50:15-21) 3.8 Group Session Conclusion: Joseph’s brothers sold him as a slave. They lied to their father. Joseph is now the prime minister of Egypt. Consider you hate your brother. You both go out somewhere and he is lost. Since you hate him, you don’t bother searching for him. About 20 years later, you get a great position in a company and He turns out to be your boss. The brother you thought was lost or even dead turns up, unannounced. Can you imagine the horror, embarrassment and fear? Multiply every feeling by 100 times. That’s how Joseph’s brothers felt. Joseph had all the right to be angry. Not only that, he had all means to harm his brothers. Joseph had a respectable position, power and the whole country at his disposal. But Joseph chose to forgive. Will you forgive your brother, friend, sister, parents when they harm you? Live like Joseph. He said, ‘You intended it for evil, but God intended it for good.’ 3.9 Group Activity: Sorry Card Preparation 1. Are there any circumstances where forgiveness was impossible, but you still chose to forgive? 2. Is there anyone you have not forgiven? Pray with them for forgiving such a person. LITTLE HANDS HUB 13
VBS 2021 PRIMARY GRACIOUS LOVE DAY 4 Teaching Objectives • God's love keeps us from falling and draws us close to Him even when we fall. • When we go astray, we have to go to God without being guilt-ridden because He still loves us. 4.1 Memory Verse: “He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 CORINTHIANS 1:8 4.2 Bible Reference: John 6:37-40; John 10:25-29; John 17: 9-19; 1 Peter 1:5; Jude 1:24; Jonah 1 & 4; Judges 13-16; John 18:25-27; Matthew 26:69-75 4.3 Day theme Introduction: Colour: Orange Fruit: Orange Have you ever asked yourself, “how can I live a holy life when I’m battling my sinful flesh every day?” To live a victorious holy life, we need the grace of God to uphold us. Today, we will discuss God’s preserving grace. Every time a saved person is tempted to sin, it is the grace of God that keeps him from falling into temptation. Even when a believer fails, the Spirit within him urges him to repent and go back to God. This is how God in His love graciously brings us back to Himself. Our part is to be sensitive to the Spirit’s urging and be repentant. Do not let your guilt of sinning against God keep you from Him. 4.4 General Session: Spotless Once Again Jean, a very smart girl, used to regularly attend Sunday school. One fine morning, she was super excited to attend Sunday school and wore a beautiful white frock. It was elegant. With matching shoes and accessories, she started from home. But to her disappointment, the road was muddy because of rain. She did not want to spoil her white dress, so she carefully walked on the road. She almost did it. Only few more steps to reach the church premises. She became LITTLE HANDS HUB 14
VBS 2021 PRIMARY happy and lifted her eyes to see the church compound. Alas! she fell down. Her beautiful white dress was filled with mud. She felt really bad and ran back home with tears. Her mom comforted her and washed her hands and face. She also washed the dress and made it spotless. Jean was super excited to see her mom's magical work and started again with the same joy. This time she was very careful and walked really slow. She came to that exact same place where she fell down, she lifted her dress and slowly walked. But to her dismay, she fell down again and her beautiful white dress got even more dirty. She got scared and wept bitterly as she ran home. Her mom hugged her, comforted her, gave her a nice bath. She washed the dirty dress and dried it with a hair dryer. Once again, Jean was given a beautiful spotless dress to wear. She left her home with a delightful smile on her face. You may think she made it to church this time. No, she fell down again for the third time. This continued for a few more times and she was finally able to reach the church after multiple attempts. A senior Pastor who had been watching the entire ordeal stopped her and asked, "Jean! I have been watching you since morning. I thought you will not make it today. But to my surprise every time you fell down, you came back much cleaner. How is it possible?" Jean answered politely, "Pastor, it is because of my mom's relentless love. Whenever I became dirty, she removed the dirt and washed me completely. She never stopped cleaning me." A mother never counts the number of times she washes her kid. She never leaves them just like that. Similarly, our loving Heavenly Father never stops loving us and cleansing us. His love is relentless. So, whenever we go astray, He still loves us and is ever ready to cleanse us with the same love. This may be our nth time but our loving Father is waiting for us to come back. 4.5 Cut-outs from Real Life: Have you ever wondered, “Why do I still get to eat a tasty home-cooked meal and a warm bed to sleep on, when just that evening I angered my parents by doing something they had continually warned me about?” It is not just you, but I too! We all are blessed with parents who love us and care for us even when we hurt them by doing things they hate. It is because of the gracious love they have for you. Be careful not to use their love as an excuse to keep doing wrong things. 4.6 General Activity: Small girl in a White Dress; Background – Orange with flowers of different colours LITTLE HANDS HUB 15
VBS 2021 PRIMARY 4.7 Group Session: Jonah (Jonah 1 and 4) 4.8 Group Session Conclusion: Did you see how Jonah wanted to escape God? But he was not able to go through with it. Did you watch how angry he became when God chose to forgive Nineveh instead of destroying it? In all circumstances, Jonah knew who His God was and His character but still choose to run away and become angry later. We, like Jonah, know the God we serve but we fall, run away and become angry at God sometimes. But weren’t you amazed by how God dealt with Jonah? He blocked the alternate way Jonah took and explained to him patiently as to why He chose to forgive Nineveh. Our great God did not have to do all this and yet we see He held on to Jonah. This is how He deals with us too – even when you choose to run away and hide, He will hold on to you and bring you back to Him. 4.9 Group Activity: Pillow Fight 1. Have you ever hidden a mistake from your parents thinking they would be angry with you? Encourage children to go to their parents even when they are wrong. 2. Do you know of children who do not have loving parents as spoken about in the application part? Pray with them for such children. LITTLE HANDS HUB 16
VBS 2021 PRIMARY CHASTISING LOVE DAY 5 Teaching Objectives • God shows us his love by correcting us. • We have to be receptive to discipline. • Discipline draws us close to God when we go astray. 5.1 Memory Verse: “Because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” PROVERBS 3:12 5.2 Bible References: Isaiah 38:16-17; Hebrews 12:5-11; Numbers 21:4-9; Numbers 20:1-13; Deuteronomy 34; 2 Samuel 12:1-14 5.3 Day Theme Introduction: Colour: Green Fruit: Avocado The idea that goes around in the world today is, ‘discipline is harsh and it is unnecessary to punish/inflict pain to teach lessons.’ But we see that even God doesn’t withhold punishments when He corrects His own. We are all running a race and discipline helps us stay on the right track of our life. It is important to have a positive outlook when it comes to discipline of God and elders. 5.4 General Session: Bitter Today, Better Tomorrow There was a boy named Peter who lived in a small town with his parents. Peter had so many friends in his neighbourhood. Every day, he played his favourite sport cricket with them after school in the evening and during weekends. He also went to school with them as they all studied in the same school. LITTLE HANDS HUB 17
VBS 2021 PRIMARY It was April, the exam season. His parents, aware of his exam, asked him to study every day after school and not to go for playing with his friends in the evening. Peter was very angry because while all his friends were playing, he was asked to stay at home and study. He argued with his parents for not allowing him to play. His friends made fun of him that he was still listening to his parents. Peter felt he was not loved by his parents because they did not allow him to play his favourite sport. With much grumpiness and anger, Peter forced himself to study every day. Final exams got over, and Peter got good marks and he was appreciated by every teacher. He felt so happy. Later, his friends came over and expressed their regret because of low marks, saying, “We wish that we had studied like you every day.” Peter then realized the intention of his parents and ran to his house and thanked his parents. He apologized for his bad behaviour. Peter learnt a lesson that his parents did not discipline to harm him but to help him succeed in life. 5.7 Cut-outs from Real Life: You were dancing around in the living room mesmerized by the music playing on the phone. Suddenly, you hear a crash. Your moment of joy is over at the horror of breaking your mother’s favourite portrait. As you are trying to get a grip of the situation, your mother runs in from the kitchen and starts scolding you. You resort to anger and go to your room. You keep thinking that your mom cares more for a photo frame than for you, her child. “She doesn’t love me. She is a bad mom.” But, have you ever reflected and thought, “May be she did not want me to get hurt by the small pieces of glass” or “that she wanted me to be careful the next time, as mistakes like this can land me in bigger trouble?” The next time you come across such situations, take a minute to analyse what wrong you have done and how you can change it. 5.6 General Activity: Parents; Background – Green with butterflies 5.7 Group Session: Israelites and the Bronze Serpent (Numbers 21:4-9) 5.8 Group Session Conclusion: LITTLE HANDS HUB 18
VBS 2021 PRIMARY Did you see how God punished the people of Israel? Do you think God was being too harsh? Israelites were stubborn people; they always grumbled against the Lord without counting His blessings in their hardships. They had just conquered a land with the Lord’s help and while moving on to the next land, they grew impatient and started complaining. God sent poisonous snakes among them to teach them a lesson. Only when they realized they had sinned, God told Moses the remedy to the situation. Many times, we make the same mistakes; God patiently warns us every time. But if we do not repent and take His grace to our advantage, He can use hard methods to get us back on track. 5.9 Group Activity: Puppet Show 1. What do you think when your parents scold you? Do you have a receptive attitude? 2. Have you ever changed your ways after listening to what your parents say? Encourage children to be open to discipline. LITTLE HANDS HUB 19
VBS 2021 PRIMARY SERVING LOVE DAY 6 Teaching Objectives • Jesus showed humility and servanthood throughout His life. • Serve others with a humble attitude. 6.1 Memory Verse: “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh 1; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” GALATIANS 5:13 1 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Holy Spirit. 6.2 Bible Reference: Colossians 3:12-14; Luke 10:25-37; Ruth 1:16-18, 2:17-18; John 13:1-17 6.3 Day Theme Introduction: Colour: White Fruit: White Peach Jesus showed humility in coming into this world till His death on the cross [Phil 2:6-8]. He set an example of being humble by washing his disciples’ feet [John 13:15]. When C. S. Lewis talks about humility, he says “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.” Thinking you deserve everything and you have every right to do what you think is best for you is taking pride in yourself. When we become more concerned about others’ feelings, their interests and well-being, we humble ourselves. LITTLE HANDS HUB 20
VBS 2021 PRIMARY 6.4 General Session: Baby Polar Bears The one thing Pudgy and the older baby polar bears he played with loved to do is explore. Sometimes their moms and dads let them go out in a pack and explore the many coves and hills that made up their beautiful polar world. They made sure to stick together mostly but often split up in small packs of two to explore several coves at a time. That often turned into a game of hunt and catch with the smaller packs attacking each other playfully and wrestling and sometimes falling into the frigid ocean as they played. They loved the cold water and it made them even more playful. Pudgy really liked being with his friends, Boris, Hector and Philippe and playing all day while the adults did whatever that adults do. One day they had found a whole area of coastline that they had not explored so they were very excited. Suddenly as Pudgy and Boris were playing tag in the water, they heard Hector yell out with excitement “Hey, look what I found!” All of the baby bears ran as fast as they could to his voice. All of them stopped and just gasped at what Hector had found. He was standing on the edge of a small cove that was almost completely hidden from the sea and the fish were so plentiful, they were almost jumping onto the shore to be eaten. The boys went wild fishing and catching the biggest, fattest fish and eating as fast as they could as though this paradise was going to disappear any second. Soon they were lying on the side of the water moaning for being so full. They napped and got back to their families before they were missed. For the next week, the four happy polar bears snuck off to their secret cove and stuffed themselves full on the amazing abundance of fish in that cove. To a polar bear, an unlimited quantity of fish is like unlimited money or gold is to humans so you can imagine how much they wanted to keep it all for themselves. On the eighth day of the feast, finally as they lay there groaning, Philippe said, “You know, I don’t feel right keeping this to ourselves. Our parents work so hard to hunt food for us and when I get home, I am not even hungry any more. I know all of our parents are pretty rich but maybe we should share this with the poor families in our community. Do you know Georgio’s mom? She is raising 10 cubs herself and her husband was killed by that fishing trawler so it’s hard for her to find enough fish. I want to share with them.” Quietly Pudgy thought that was a good idea but the other bears got very upset. LITTLE HANDS HUB 21
VBS 2021 PRIMARY “All those cubs will eat it all and there will be none left for us!” Hector worried. “They can have our scraps but they shouldn’t get the best. They are poor. They wouldn’t know what to do with all this wealth. They would just waste it.” Boris added and they threw snowballs at Philippe for such a dumb idea. Pudgy felt bad for not defending Philippe who had to take that abuse all alone. All the way home, they taunted him when finally Pudgy spoke up. “I don’t think we know best about this. Let’s consult King Marcos. He will know what to do” he advised. King Marcos was the wise head of the polar bear community and it was well known he would help them see what God would have them do with the fortune. Boris and Hector knew that their parents were on some committees with King Marcos so they would advise him that the wealthy deserve this amazing discovery and that the poor should just have the left overs. The day came for the little bears to go in and see King Marcos but the rest were all scared so they made Pudgy go in and tell him what they found. When he came out, all of the little bears were on fire with curiosity but all Pudgy said was, “I just told him what we found. I told him both sides of our talks about what to do with it all and he just thanked me and said he would decide before the Polar Bear Council this Friday.” The Polar Bear council was where King Marcos gathered every single bear in the community and told them of his recent decisions, news that concerns the community and his rulings. The meeting went on and on and on and the four baby bears were so bored but they stayed to hear his decision. “And now I want to tell you of four baby bears who are setting an example of how to serve God and their fellow bears.” The king finally announced. “These four bears found a treasure trove of fish, enough to feed all of us for many generations to come. They did not hoard it for themselves but they want to share it with all of us. Come up here boys.” He said signaling to the four little bears to join him on the flat rise where he did his announcements. “These four baby bears have given their find, which they could have kept hidden for themselves, to the community and it is my decision that the first to visit the cove will be the poorest amongst us. I decided this because this is what our great God who created all living things would want and I know that in their hearts, these wonderful boys want to serve God more than anything. They have truly brought a miracle from God to us and God will reward them mightily.” The roar of approval that went up from all the bears in the community was thunderous. Each baby polar bear could look out and see their families and see them beam with pride for them. All of the boys were blushing but when Pudgy looked over at Hector and Boris, he knew that in their hearts they were both unhappy with the decision but also LITTLE HANDS HUB 22
VBS 2021 PRIMARY embarrassed because they were being praised for their love of the poor but they secretly didn’t want to serve. The meeting ended and the four little bears met privately. “I am sorry I didn’t encourage us to give the fish to the poor.” Boris said. “Pudgy, you and Philippe were right. We don’t deserve these praises and yet somehow we feel proud that it turned out this way.” “It is fine Boris” a voice came from behind them and King Marcos had walked up and put his huge paws on their heads to give them pats of appreciation. “Even if you had your doubts, you did the right thing. And because you overcame selfishness to serve God, your sacrifice is even more wonderful. Forget your sins and praise God that you are going to be a good little polar bear from this day forward.” And from that day forward all of the little bears were the best citizens of the community and they knew that even better than the fish, the episode at the cove taught them how to be humble and know God’s heart for the poor and that lesson was more valuable than all the wealth in the universe. 6.7 Cut-outs from Real Life: The teacher asks you to help with the school day preparations; your pastor asks you to help him in arranging the chairs properly at the church; your parents ask you to fetch water for guests at your home – when you help people in such situations, what is your attitude? Do you help to be praised by the teacher/fellow students, your pastor, or the guests, respectively? Do you serve in humility – helping because someone is in need or to get applause? Think about it. God asks us to love and serve each other in humility. 6.5 General Activity: Polar Bears; Background - White 6.6 Group Session: The Parable of Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) 6.8 Group Session Conclusion: LITTLE HANDS HUB 23
VBS 2021 PRIMARY Children, did you see three different people in the video? Whom did you like the most? I guess it would be the kind and good-hearted Samaritan who took care of the wounded Jewish man. Did you know Jews hated Samaritans and treated them with contempt? But we see in the video that a Jewish priest and Levite leave their own kind to die; instead, a Samaritan, who in normal circumstances will not be allowed to touch a Jewish man, treats the man’s wounds and takes him to an inn. He doesn’t stop there; he goes on to pay for his stay and promises to come back in two days to see if the man has recovered and pay any additional costs. He could not have done this if he did not have love and humility. Doesn’t each of us like a person when they are good-natured as this Samaritan? Let us also strive to be like the Samaritan serving others in humility. 6.8 Group Activity: Cooking Show 1. How many instances in your life have you served others with humility? 2. VBS 2021 PRIMARY TRUE LOVE DAY 7 Teaching Objectives • God's act of giving His son as a sacrifice was a depiction of His love; God acted not just spoke. • True love only produces true humility; When we humble ourselves, true love will be exhibited in our actions. 7.1 Memory Verse: “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 JOHN 3:18 7.2 Bible Reference: Philippians 2:3-8; Ephesians 4:15-16; Genesis 22:1-18; Esther 4:15-8:17; Luke 10:25-37 7.3 Day Theme Introduction: Colour: Black Fruit: Blackberry We saw earlier in Day 1 that God devised a plan to save His people. The promise of Messiah has been spoken in many prophecies. God did not make vain promises. He acted on His promises, whereby He showed His great love. To show true love in our actions, we must learn to be humble. Only when we have mastered the art of humility, can we show love by our actions irrespective of who is on the receiving end. 7.4 General Session: Word or Deed? LITTLE HANDS HUB 25
VBS 2021 PRIMARY It was the day Priya was looking forward to for a long time – her birthday. She was turning 12 years old and was very excited about it. Her parents bought her a new bicycle for her birthday and she was on the top of the world. The cycle was black in colour with pink shiny stickers and a basket attached to the handlebar. It even had a silver bell. She couldn’t wait to ride it after school. She hurried home after school to check out her new cycle. When she came home, she was shocked! There was a big scratch on the body of the cycle, the shiny stickers were peeling off and there was dirt everywhere. She went inside the house and called her younger sister angrily. “Pooja, did you ride the cycle when I was at school?” Pooja was frightened and said, “Yes, I am sorry, I took it out for a short ride and fell down.” Priya was so angry that she shouted at little Pooja and went to her mom to tell her about the cycle. As she narrated the story, her mom saw Pooja crying. Pooja’s knee was scraped, and it was bleeding. Her mom asked her, “Priya, do you remember the time when Pooja was born?” Priya replied, “Yes, she was so tiny and pink. She used to cry a lot”. Her mom replied, “Yes, and you always comforted her and played with her. I know you are disappointed that your cycle is broken but your sister is hurt too. Are you going to value the cycle more than your little sister?” Priya felt ashamed for the way she behaved. She went and apologized to Pooja and with her mom’s help put a band-aid on the wound. Jesus loved us and showed us how to love others. He wants us to show our love in action towards the people who are around us. 7.5 Cut-outs from Real Life: You walk to school along the same route every day. Every day you see an old man sitting at the end of your street, begging for alms. How many times have you walked away saying to yourself, “He does seem poor; it is pitiful.” Have you ever given him food or clothing? It is not enough to feel pity for someone but it is important to show Christ-like love to them. Good deeds should not be done only on days like Christmas. Each day is a God-given opportunity to help the less fortunate. 7.6 General Activity: Black Cycle; Black with white stars 7.7 Group Session: Abraham sacrificing his son, Isaac (Genesis 22:1-18) 7.8 Group Session Conclusion: LITTLE HANDS HUB 26
VBS 2021 PRIMARY Hey Kids! Did you see how Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only son, whom he had begotten in his old age? He showed in his actions that he loved God more than anything else. He did not question God on why he must sacrifice his only son that God Himself gave him. Instead, he humbled himself before God and was ready to sacrifice his son. In this way, we also have to show our love for God and others in our actions. LITTLE HANDS HUB 27

VBS 2021 PRIMARY FRIENDLY LOVE DAY 8 Teaching Objectives • God is our greatest friend. He loved us by dying for our sins. He listens to us, cares for us and is our all in all. • Love others like Christ loved; Live in harmony by sacrificing your interests, your desires and even your needs. 8.1 Memory Verse: “not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” PHILIPPIANS 2:4 8.2 Bible Reference: 1 Peter 1:22; 1 Corinthians 10:24; Ephesians 5:1-2; Romans 15:1-7; John 13:34-35; 1 Samuel 18:1-4; 1 Samuel 20; 2 Kings 5:1-18; Ruth 1:16-18, 2:17-18 8.3 Day theme Introduction: Colour: Blue Fruit: Blueberry There is a void in our lives that cannot be filled by anything else; we try to fill it up with work, music, and other addictions. But this emptiness can only be made whole by God. He is our greatest friend, comforter, and protector. Jesus says in John 13: 35, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” We have to show love like Christ. Christ willingly sacrificed Himself for our sins. In view of His sacrifice, the least we can do is sacrifice our interests, desires and needs for the sake of others. 8.4 General Session: The Greatest Sacrifice Two caskets lay end to end in the receiving room of the funeral home. Double deaths had come to the Stokes family. Those who occupied the caskets had not come to the funeral home after dying with old age. They were young people, teenagers, just preparing to live. The tragedy of tragedies was that they were brother and sister, and both had been killed in the same tragic automobile accident. A great crowd gathered to view the teenagers and to greet their grief-stricken parents, The Reverend and Mrs. Paul Stokes. How would they react? What would they say when they viewed not one but two of their precious children, now cold in death? LITTLE HANDS HUB 29
VBS 2021 PRIMARY Each of the children was active in his or her respective school and had many friends. Paul Jr. attended nearby Coastal Carolina College, while Becky, his sister, was in the tenth grade in Aynor High School. Not only were they brother and sister, but they were also good friends. On the night of the tragedy that led to their deaths, Becky and several friends had a birthday party for Paul Jr. at the First Baptist Church of Aynor, South Carolina, where Reverend Stokes was pastor. After the party Paul Jr. asked Becky and her date, Tommy, to go with him to Mullins to get his girl, Barbara, and they would come back to Aynor. In traveling to Mullins, they had to drive on a highway that passed through the Little Pee Dee Swamp. The highway through the swamp was built on a causeway, with a canal filled with water on each side of the road. There were no guardrails on the sides to prevent a car from going into the canal, and on occasion someone would run off the road, down the embankment and into the deep water. Sometimes the person escaped; sometimes he drowned in his car. No one knew what happened that fateful night after they had gotten Barbara. They were coming back through the swamp when something terrible happened. Their car ran off the highway, down the high embankment and into the water. The car sank with the brother and sister drowning in the accident. It would have been awful enough for one to perish in the accident, but two, and both from the same family. The entire student body of Aynor High School, Coastal Carolina College and surrounding communities were engulfed in grief. The church community where the children lived was absorbed in the tragedy. Hundreds of people were personally involved in the grief process. At the funeral home, Reverend and Mrs. Stokes arrived in a grief-worn condition. They went into the receiving room where their beloved son and daughter lay, cold and lifeless. The crowd again wondered what reaction they would have, or if they would be able to stand the pain. Reverend and Mrs. Stokes walked and stood gazing down upon their wonderful children, first one and then the other. Tears again flooded their eyes as they stood speechless for moments. Then from deep within his crushed heart and soul, Reverend Stokes uttered words spoken centuries ago from another man who had lost his family. With tears streaming down his face, he uttered the words of Job: "The Lord has given, and the Lord has taken. Blessed be the name of the Lord." With that he fell silent. It was at that precise moment, however, that the strength of the human spirit and supreme faith in God was revealed. The man of God, himself stricken to the heart, utterly human, did not curse his fate or the God that he loved so well. Instead, he and his faithful wife cast themselves and their dead children entirely into the hands of God. LITTLE HANDS HUB 30
VBS 2021 PRIMARY Those present knew that the stuff from which the minister and his wife were sewn was also the stuff from which heroes were made. There was another twist to the story that demands telling. The real hero of the situation lay in the casket that day. The son, Paul Jr., had indeed gone down with the car into the deep water with his sister. He had indeed drowned on that terrible night. However, Paul Jr., Tommy and Barbara had escaped from the car. He and Tommy had kicked the windshield out of the sunken automobile and three of them had come to the surface. Surfacing, they called to each other in the dark, and Paul Jr. realized that his sister, Becky, was still below, trapped in the car. Without hesitating he took long, deep gulps of air into his lungs and dived back down to the sunken car to help free his sister. Meanwhile, Tommy and Barbara swam quickly to the nearby shore and waited in the darkness for the sounds of surfacing swimmers. Time crawled as they agonized over the struggle that was going on below in total darkness in the black water. Finally, they knew that not only Becky but Paul Jr. also had perished in a tragedy enacted before their eyes. The whole truth of the ordeal did not come to light for several hours. Paul Jr. had taken a course in senior lifesaving and was an excellent swimmer. Even in the darkness he had located the submerged automobile, but also, he had to locate the front windshield to get back into the car. He had done that and had found Becky unconscious in the back seat. However, finding the car, the windshield and Becky in total darkness took time—too much time. Later, when rescuers found Paul Jr. and Becky in the car, Paul Jr. had his arm around Becky's neck in the lifesaving technique position. In that position he was frozen in death. He had chosen to give his life in attempting to rescue his sister, rather than swim to safety without her. The teenage brother was the real hero, and he came from good stock. Later, it was learned that Becky had no water in her lungs. She had been dead before she entered the water by either a broken neck or a severe blow to the head in the accident. What was it Jesus said about such situations? "Better love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for a friend"—may be even more so for a sister. The two caskets lay end to end in the receiving room of the funeral home, and in one casket lay a genuine hero who had made the greatest sacrifice. 8.5 Cut-outs from Real Life: Think of that day when you came across a friend who did not bring lunch. If King Saul knew that his son, Jonathan, helped his adversary escape, he could have him even killed. God loves us even when we repeatedly sin. He knows we are battling against our sinful nature and that we could fall at times. He hates sin but not a sinner. His love is enduring; even when you feel like you cannot love yourself, God loves you. When we experience such a love, we would automatically show love even when the situation is demanding and the person is unlovable. 9.4 General Session: Fireproof Have you seen a person suffering from leprosy?
