INTRODUCING THE 2021 JUDGING PANEL CONFORMATION MS JUDY DOCKSEY (NSW) Group 1A (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Griffon Bruxellois, Japanese Chins) Group 2A (Staffordshire Bull Terriers) Group 4A (Deerhounds, Greyhounds) Group 5 and Group Specials Group 6A (Bernese Mountain Dogs) Judy Docksey originally bred and exhibited Australian Stud Book Ponies, Galloway Hacks, and Harness Horses. She has been involved in purebred dog sports for many years, predominantly as a breeder and exhibitor of Shetland Sheepdogs. Her first dog show was in 1988. Passionate about her breed, the Shetland Sheepdog and a strongly competitive exhibitor, Judy has experienced a great deal of success at all levels of competition. Judy has been breeding since the 80’s under the “Beauideal” prefix, and dogs enjoying “Beauideal” in their lineage feature in many top international pedigrees. She has bred several prolific winners, who have been awarded Best in Shows in Australia together with New Zealand, and South Africa. Judy has imported many Shelties and also frozen semen into Australia for the betterment of the breed and to increase the available gene pool. Commencing her judging career in 2001 with the Working Dog Group, Judy is now an ANKC All Breeds and FCI All Rounder Judge. W ith a great love of judging and its challenges, Judy has had the pleasure of judging in many overseas countries, including Japan, Finland, South Africa, and New Zealand. Highlights in her judging career include judging breed specialties in Finland and both islands of New Zealand. Judy has also judged breed specialties for Dalmatians, American Staffordshire Terriers, Bearded Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Kelpies, together with Border Collies. Judy also considers attending Crufts as a great highlight of her time in dogs. Always keen to give something back to the dog world, she is an executive member of Toy and General All Breeds Kennel Club, the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog Club, as well as holding positions in the Shetland Sheepdog Club of NSW. Judy also presents the Shetland Sheepdog breed lecture for the NSW judges training scheme. She is an accredited ANKC tester for the ANKC judging scheme. It has been almost a decade since Judy judged the Working Dog Group in Victoria and the RASV warmly welcomes Judy to the 2021 judging panel. MR GEOFF LOVE (SA) Group 3B (Balance of Breeds and Group Specials) Group 4B (Balance of Breeds and Group Specials) Geoff Love’s life in pedigree dogs commenced fifty years ago with the purchase of his first Cocker Spaniel. This dog became his first Champion and since then, Geoff has had continuous involvement with the breed, and many Champions and BIS winners have followed. Initially he bred Cocker Spaniels under the ‘Lovlang’ prefix, but in recent years this has been under the ‘Kebarlea’ prefix in partnership with Kerry Hutt. Geoff’s involvement with Whippets started in 1979 when he purchased a Whippet bitch from the well- known Kylebay Kennel. Since then, he has always had a Whippet in his yard. Over the last sixteen years, Geoff has been breeding/exhibiting Whippets under the ‘Wyldchase’ prefix with his partner Kerry Hutt. Together they have experienced great success, having bred and owned many BIS winners and with Supreme Champions. Under the guidance of two of his mentors, the late Roy Burnell and Dr Harry Spira, he commenced his judging career and training in the early eighties in NSW, gaining his All Breeds licence in 1998. With his most treasured judging appointments being the judging of specialties in his two chosen breeds, Cocker Spaniels and Whippets, Geoff feels that this acknowledgement by your peers is an honour and such appointments have been much cherished, as they take him back to his ‘grass roots’ in the dog world. In recent years, Geoff has been involved in the judges training scheme in South Australia, which he has found extremely satisfying. This has given him a opportunity to be involved with the growth of the dog world and share his knowledge and experience with othe rs. It has been seven years since Geoff judged Gundogs in Victoria, and longer since he judged Hounds. RASV welcomes Geoff to the 2021 Royal Melbourne Show judging panel with total confidence that he provides a fair and professional judgement of all exhibits. 2
MR PETER PRIMROSE (WA) Group 6B (Balance of Breeds and Group Specials) Group 7B (Balance of Breeds and Group Specials) Peter, along with his wife Rita, commenced showing dogs in 1977. Peter first entered the show ring with a German Shepherd dog, and six months later they purchased their first Samoyed. Peter and Rita Primrose bred their first litter of Samoyeds in 1979, producing the first of many Australian Champions under the “Snowdara” prefix. In 1987 they purchased their first Lhasa Apso, and she went on to be the leader in the breed in Western Australia until she was retired. Peter has also exhibited Border Collies, Afghans, Tibetan Terriers, and Bearded Collies. Along with their daughter, Peter and Rita are still actively breeding and exhibiting both Samoyeds and Lhasa Apsos, and more recently exhibiting Siberian Huskies. The Samoyeds and Lhasa Apsos continue to produce show Champions and win awards at all levels in the show ring. Peter commenced his judging career in 1982 and was granted his All Breeds status in 1996. He has judged widely both in Australia and overseas, including many areas of Asia, South Africa, and Canada. He has thoroughly enjoyed his judging around the world and seeing a wide spectrum of dogs. Peter has judged widely across Australia, having previous appointments at both Darwin and Canberra Royal Shows. Currently President of the Freemantle Dog Club and Vice President of the Utility Dog Club of WA, he is also a past President of the Samoyed Club of WA. Peter has also served on committees of the Metropolitan Kennel Club, the WA Kennel Club, and the Working Dog Club of WA. Peter has been a coordinator in the WA Judges Training Scheme in the past and is an accredited assessor. He served on the Gov erning Council of the Canine Associated of Western Australia for 16 years and was the President of the Canine Association of Western Australia (now DogsWest) from 2010 until August 2016. It will be eight years since Peter has judged in Victoria, and longer since judging Utility and Non-Sporting Groups here. He has proved to be a popular judge with great integrity and RASV is delighted that Peter has accepted the invitation to join the 2021 Royal Melbourne Show judging panel. MR ASHLEY REID (VIC) Group 1B (Balance of Breeds and Group Specials) Group 2B (Balance of Breeds and Group Specials) Group 3A (Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers) Group 7A (All Poodles) Ashley Reid entered the dog world in 1976. Since 1986 his focus has been Tibetan Terriers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (all four colours), winning multiple Best in Shows and breeding many Champions, Grand Champions and Supreme Champions under the "Aryed" prefix. Ashley also bred Miniature Pinschers in partnership with Helene McMahon under the "Khanrae" prefix. Ashley is also an accredited ANKC tester. It has been over a decade since Ashley has judged groups in Victoria. The RASV recognises Ashley’s wide experience as both a handler and an international judge and is very excited to welcome Ashley to the 2021 judging panel. 3
MR SIMON MILLS (ACT) SWEEPSTAKES Simon Mills has been involved in the breeding and exhibiting of dogs since childhood with a career spanning more than 40 years. His initial involvement was with Weimaraners which he exhibited and bred for over 25 years. Simon, together with his daughter, currently exhibit and breed Jack Russell Terriers and Fox Terriers (Smooth) under the Clayco prefix. He has experienced major success in the conformation ring, including Royal group wins, together with Best in Show Royal placements. The Clayco Kennel has had major success in the conformation ring and have produced excellent breeding stock for other kennels and have exported stock to both Japan and the USA. Testament to their quality stock is that Clayco has produced National speciality winners, regional speciality winners, all breeds Best in Show winners, and numerous Best in Group winners. Simon has also owned, exhibited, and been involved with various breeds including Weimaraners, German Shorthaired Pointers, Whippets, Foxhounds, and Beagles. He has prepared and shown many coated terriers to be major winners with numerous Best in Shows at all breeds shows and breed speciality shows. Simon had early involvement with gundogs that exposed him to field and obedience work. It was this early development and engagement in breeding and exhibiting that gave Simon a good grounding in the dog world. The countless hours of discussions, lectures and puppy day assessments from our leading breeders has enhanced his evolution as a successful exhibitor, breeder and judge that Simon is today. Simon considers himself a breeder first and foremost and believes that many Australian breeders have progressed with their chosen breed to highest level in this country, with Australian show dogs being some of the best in the world! Simon’s judging career began in the late 90’s, he was awarded his first licence in 1998 and gained his All Breeds status in 2018. Simon has been very fortunate to have judged at all breeds, group, and speciality shows throughout the world. These include countries such as England, Japan, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Philippines, and New Zealand, together with appointments across Australia. Highlights have been awarding CCs to Weimaraners in the UK, together with judging at the 2019 European Dog Show in Austria. Simon has also held various positions on ACT dog clubs and has served on the Governing Council of DOGSACT, including the posi tion of President for over 12 years. This in turn required him to be a Director on the ANKC. Simon Mills is very passionate about breeding, exhibiting and judging dogs, together with the promotion of purebred dogs and dog sports. He feels extremely privileged to be invited to officiate over the Sweepstakes classes at the 2021 Royal Melbourne Show and he thanks the RASV All Breeds Championship Show Committee for this honour. ACTION DOGS MRS CHERYL BEDGGOOD (WA) OBEDIENCE, AGILITY AND JUMPING Cheryl’s lifelong love of dogs and dog sports was firmly cemented over 45 years ago when she started obedience classes with a beautiful Afghan Hound. Whilst the Afghan challenged her abilities, German Shepherds were much easier and Cheryl spent many years travelling from country WA to Perth to trial, with numerous wins and successes along the way. As an instructor, Cheryl has found it immensely rewarding to support and encourage people when they competed, and to relish in their successes. The enjoyment of competing and instructing led her to train to be an Obedience Judge, and she gained this licence in 1980. Two Rottweilers have since joined her old German Shepherd crew and now residing in Perth, Cheryl continues her passion of instructing Rottweiler owners in obedience and agility, as well as competing and judging. Cheryl has been a Rally O, Agility, Games, Endurance, Dances with Dogs, and Tricks Judge since the inception of these disciplines, and has enjoyed judging extensively across WA, including state and national events, and the Perth Royal Show. Some of the more recent interstate appointments have been Obedience, Rally O, Agility, and Jumping at the Darwin Royal Show in 2018, Rally O and Obedience at the German Shepherd National in Melbourne in 2019, and Dances with Dogs in Melbourne that same year. Cheryl has had the opportunity to judge in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on several occasions, with the differences in the rules a welcomed challenge. Having chaired the Judges Training Panel for several years, Cheryl gets enormous satisfaction from assisting aspiring judges to attain elevation to the next level and obtain their Obedience or Rally O licences. Cheryl is both honoured and excited to be a part of the 2021 Royal Melbourne Show, and wishes all competitors the best for a very successful event. MR PETER BUYKX (VIC) AGILITY GAMES AND OPEN JUMPING After competing for six years with his first dog in agility, Peter decided to find out how and why the judges arranged their courses. He subsequently became an Agility Judge in 2003 and three years later, attained his Games Judging licence. Since then, Peter has attended multiple training events, both in the classroom and in the ring, to continue his education and knowledge in dog sports. Peter has accepted judging appointments in multiple locations around metropolitan Melbourne, allowing him to still enjoy weekends with his family and pursue the hobby he loves – agility and jumping for dogs. Highlights of Peter’s judging career so far include the Agility and Jumping Dog of the Year ACT 2007, National Agility Trial 2008, Launceston Royal 2011, Fred’s’ Pass Agility Club in 2014, Top Dog of the Year in Victoria in 2013, QLD State Trial 2016, Royal Melbourne Show Agility and Jumping Trial 2016, and the National Agility Trial Open Jumping Final 2018. When judging, Peter aims to provide a course that is challenging yet does not discriminate against the height of an individual dog. Peter prides himself on creating a course design that encourages the dog to move freely between obstacles while avoiding the formidable challenges he has set. Whilst the most controlled and fastest team will reap the rewards, as a judge, Peter’s greatest reward is seeing a handler and dog leave the ring happy and smiling. Peter is looking forward to challenging both handler and dog at the 2021 Royal Melbourne Show during the exciting and fun Agility Games Trial. 5
