October 31, 2021 Reformation Sunday Prelude (10:30) Solo Tiffany Fisher Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Opening Hymn: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God No. 504 1
Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Kyrie 3
Prayer of the Day Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 5
First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 31 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the LORD,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 46 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in the depths of the sea; 3 though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble with its tumult. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be shaken; God shall help it at the break of day. 6 The nations rage, and the kingdoms shake; God speaks, and the earth melts away. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 8 Come now, regard the works of the LORD, what desolations God has brought upon the earth; 9 behold the one who makes war to cease in all the world; who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. 10 “Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Second Reading: Romans 3:19-28 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held 6
accountable to God. 20For “no human being will be justified in his sight” by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Leader Gospel: John 8:31-36 The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 31 Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a 7
slave to sin. 35The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (10:30 am) Special Music Claire Conner Sermon Hymn of the Day: Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word No. 517 8
(At 10:30 am Service) Affirmation of Baptism There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:4-6 In keeping with God’s Word, we affirm that each of us is to be Baptized once in a lifetime, but we believe that the gifts of Holy Baptism are continually renewed in the lives of God’s people. In addition to a daily return to Baptism in remembrance and thanksgiving,, we employ rites of Baptismal affirmation to mark significant milestones in the journey of the individual believer in the community of faith. One such milestone, among others, is a time when those who have been Baptized at an early age have come through a period of nurture in the Church and desire to affirm the faith in which they were Baptized and pledge their continued participation in the ministry and mission of the Church. We celebrate this milestone in the life of the young men and woman coming before us and before God in the Rite of Confirmation. OUR 2021 CONFIRMANDS Eli Joel Conner Erica May Miller Natalie Claire Thompson Lilah Regina Werner Confirmands and their Parents shall gather with the Pastor at the Baptismal Font Affirmation of Faith Pastor: Sisters and brothers, when you were received into the Body of Christ by the waters of Holy Baptism, your parents and sponsors promised to bring you to the services of God’s house, teach you the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place into your hands the Holy Scriptures, and provide for your instruction in the Christian faith, so that you may live in the covenant of your Baptism and in communion with the Church, and lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ. The people of this congregation have faithfully joined with them in fulfilling these obligations. And now, you stand before us and before God, desiring to affirm the faith in which you were baptized, the faith in which you have been instructed, and I ask you now to join your brothers and sisters in Christ in making profession of that faith: All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, 9
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Pastor: Is this, then, the faith you now affirm as your own? Confirmand: Yes. I affirm this creed as my own. Pastor: Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? And, do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? Confirmand: Yes, I renounce them. Pastor: Do you turn to Christ as your Lord and Savior? Confirmand: In faith I turn to Christ. Pastor: And, do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism: to live among God’s faithful people, to hear the Word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper, to proclaim the Good News of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Confirmand: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. The Pastor addresses the Congregation. Pastor: People of God, to you promise to support this sister and pray for her in her life in Christ? Congregation: We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Blessing The Confirmands shall kneel, and their Parents shall stand behind them. Let us pray. We give You thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit, You give us new birth, wash us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. 10
The following blessing is pronounced over each Confirmand as the Pastor and Parents, lay hands on her/his head. Stir up in Name the gift of Your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in Your presence, both now and forever. Amen. Parents shall place a stole about the Confirmand’s shoulders. Reception into Voting Membership Blessing Rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit, go out into the world in peace; be of good courage; hold to what is good; return no one evil for evil; strengthen the faint-hearted; support the weak; help the suffering; honor all people; and love and serve our God. And, the almighty and merciful God, the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen. Greeting Beloved of God, let us greet these brothers and sisters in Christ. We give thanks to God for your presence among us. We rejoice in your affirmation of the faith of your Baptism and your pledge to work with us in the ministry of this congregation and the mission of the Church of Jesus Christ. Together let us give praise to God and bear God’s creative and redeeming Word to all the world. The Congregation is invited to greet the Confirmand personally at the conclusion of worship. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 12
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, give for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. The Lord’s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and forever. Amen. All who hunger and thirst, come. The table is ready. Communion Prayer after Communion Lord of life, in the gift of your body and blood you turn the crumbs of our faith into a feast of salvation. Send us forth into the world with shouts of joy, bearing witness to the abundance of your love in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Blessing People of God, you are Christ’s body, bringing new life to a suffering world. The holy Trinity, ☩ one God, bless you now and forever. Amen. 13

We are encouraging members to find the newsletter on our new updated website trinityelca.com under the news tab. If you would like to receive a copy via email, please let the church office know by emailing Carol at trinityelca@bex.net she will send you one each month. There will be several paper copies available at the church for you to pick up on Sunday mornings if you would like to do that. If you are unable to access the newsletter by any of these means, please call the church office at 419-626-0204 and let Carol know that you still need a mailed copy, and she will send one out. This change is a big one for us and we are giving it a try. If we find this just doesn’t work, we will consider going back to mailing everyone’s. 16
PASTOR IN THE OFFICE: In order to help Trinity, continue to be a stable congregation it was approved from council that one of our interim pastors be present at the church during the week. Pastor Ralph will be doing this service. He will be in the office on Mondays and Wednesdays each week for a couple hours in the morning. If you would like to see him, we ask that you call the church office before coming to be sure he is here and did not have an obligation elsewhere. 17
