For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. He shall redeem their lives from oppression and violence, And dear shall their blood be in his sight. Refrain 2nd Reading Ephesians 1:3-12 Gillian Moore Reader A reading from The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his 5
grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. Reader Hear what the spirit is saying to the church. All Thanks be to God. Please rise as you are able Gospel Acclamation Refrain: Alleluia, aleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia! Gospel Reading Matthew 2:1-12 Reader The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Reader The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’” Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by 6 another road.
Reader The Gospel of Christ. All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Gospel Acclamation Refrain: Alleluia, aleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia! Sermon The Rev. Roberta Fraser Please rise as you are able Nicene Creed Celebrant Let us confess our faith, as we say, All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. 7
He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Sue Greenstreet Please stand, sit or kneel as is your custom for prayer Confession and Absolution BAS 191 Celebrant Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites us to this table. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Celebration of the Eucharist Offertory Hymn Wise Men They Came CP 161 1 Wise men, they came to look for wisdom, finding one wiser than they knew; rich men, they met with one yet richer -- King of the kings, they knelt to you: Jesus, our wisdom from above, wealth and redemption, life and love. 2 Pilgrims they were, from unknown countries, searching for one who knows the world; lost are their names and strange their journeys, famed is their zeal to find the child: Jesus, in you the lost are claimed, aliens are found and known and named. 3 Magi, they stooped to see your splendour, led by a star to light supreme; promised Messiah, Lord eternal, glory and peace are in your name. Joy of each day, our song by night, shine on our path your holy light. 4 Guests of their God, they opened treasures -- incense and gold and solemn myrrh; welcoming one too young to question how came these gifts, and what they were. Gift beyond price of gold or gem, make among us your Bethlehem. Prayer over the Gifts Celebrant Source of all love and life, receive all we offer you this day, and through the coming of your Son, help us to see in others him who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving SEP1 Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. 9
People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant Holy God, Lover of creation, we give you thanks and praise for in the ocean of your steadfast love you bear us and place the song of your Spirit in our hearts. When we turn from your love and defile the earth, you do not abandon us. Your Spirit speaks through Huldah and Micah, through prophets, sages, and saints in every age, to confront our sin and reveal the vision of your new creation. Joining in the song of the universe we proclaim your glory saying (singing): All Holy, holy, holy Lord, Holy God of Pow’r and might; Heav’n and earth are full of your glory. Glory to You O Lord most high. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Please be seated Celebrant Gracious God, in the fullness of time you sent Jesus the Christ to share our fragile humanity. Through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection you open the path from brokenness to health, from fear to trust, from pride and conceit to reverence for you. Rejected by a world that could not bear the Gospel of life, Jesus knew death was near. His head anointed for burial by an unknown woman, Jesus gathered together those who loved him. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it and gave it to his friends, saying, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” 10
After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, gave you thanks, and said “Drink this all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” And now we gather at this table in response to his commandment, to share the bread and cup of Christ’s undying love, and to proclaim our faith. All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Celebrant Breathe your Holy Spirit, the wisdom of the universe, upon these gifts that we bring to you: this bread, this cup, ourselves, our souls and bodies, that we may be signs of your love for all the world and ministers of your transforming purpose. Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, Creator of all, and we bless your holy name for ever. People Amen. The Lord’s Prayer (said) Celebrant As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. 11
The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. All God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. The Communion Celebrant The gifts of God for the children of God All Thanks be to God Spiritual Communion We pray this prayer for spiritual communion with those who worship with us via zoom, and cannot share the sacrament with us. Let us pray In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen. Lamb of God 1 O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy, have mercy, have mercy on us. 2 O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy, have mercy, have mercy on us. 3 O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; Lullay, lulla, thou little tiny child: Grand us your peace. Communion Hymn From East to West CP 155 1 From east to west, from shore to shore, let every heart awake and sing the holy child whom Mary bore, the Christ, the everlasting King. 12
2 Behold! The world's creator wears the form and fashion of a slave; our very flesh our Maker shares, his fallen creatures all to save. 3 For this how wondrously he wrought! A maiden, in her lowly place, became, in ways beyond all thought, the chosen vessel of his grace. 4 Assenting to the angel's word, she chose what God the Spirit willed, and suddenly the promised Lord that pure and hallowed temple filled. 5 He shrank not from the oxen's stall, he lay within the manger bed, and he whose bounty feeds us all at Mary's breast himself was fed. 6 And while the angels in the sky sang praise above the silent field, to shepherds poor the Lord most high, the one great Shepherd, was revealed. 7 All glory for this blessèd morn to God, the source of all, is due; all praise to you, O Virgin-born, all praise, O Holy Ghost, to you. Sending Out of the Disciples Prayer after Communion Celebrant Light eternal, you have nourished us in the mystery of the body and blood of your Son. By your grace keep us ever faithful to your word, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Doxology Celebrant Glory to God, All whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Please be seated 13
Announcements Please rise as you are able Blessing Closing Hymn As with Gladness Men of Old CP 160 1 As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold; as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright; so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to thee. 2 As with joyful steps they sped to thy lowly manger-bed, there to bend the knee before thee, whom heaven and earth adore; so may we with willing feet ever seek the mercy-seat. 3 As they offered gifts most rare at that manger rude and bare; so may we with joyful song, raising voices pure and strong, all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee, our heavenly king. 4 In the heavenly country bright need they no created light: thou its light, its joy, its crown, thou its sun which goes not down; there forever may we sing alleluias to our king. Dismissal Celebrant Go in peace and love to serve God. All Thanks be to God. Postlude 14
