“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says Is 50:4c-9a / Jas 2:14-18 / Mk 8:27-35
he has faith but does not have works? Can this faith save
him? ...Indeed someone might say, ‘You have faith and I
have works.’ Demonstrate your faith to me without works Monday, September 13
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.” St. John Chrysostom, Bishop & Doctor of the Church
                                                                    1 Tm 2:1-8; Lk 7:1-10
The letter of St. James clearly reveals that we can see faith in
action. We are saved by Jesus, so faith is essential. Faith can- Tuesday, September 14

The works of mercy, reflected in the judgement scene of Mat-
thew, help us to examine how deep is our faith and how well Wednesday, September 15
it is expressed. Our care for the hungry, homeless, foreigner, Our Lady of Sorrows
the sick and dying is the expression of compassion and our 1 Tm 3:14-16; Jn 19:25-27 or Lk 2:33-35
response to Jesus Christ in them. They are us.

Much can be done, and thanks be to God, many around us are Sts. Cornelios, Pope / Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs
putting their faith into action. How can I join them? 1 Tm 4:12-16; Lk 7:36-50

First Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9a Friday, September 17
Isaiah describes the willingness of the Suffering Servant to St. Robert Bellarmine, Bishop & Doctor of the Church
submit to the persecution of his enemies. This willingness 1 Tm 6:2c-12; Lk 8:1-3
stems from true faith in God, and the knowledge that the Lord
will always be his help. Saturday, September 18

Second Reading: James 2:14-18 1 Tm 6:13-16; Lk 8:4-15
James states that if some one is hungry and you wish them
well but do not help them, you have done them no good. He The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
compares this to stating your faith, without backing it up with
your actions. He reminds us that we must show our faith Sunday, September 19, 2021
through our good works. Wis 2:12, 17-20 / Jas 3:16—4:3 / Mk 9:30-37
