My Dear People, We crown the previous weeks of celebrations with the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Next Sunday we begin to once again observe the Sundays of Ordinary Time. It is good to celebrate this Feast of the Holy Eucharist for the Eucharist is at the heart of Catholic life. It should be part of our “ordinary” everyday life. The Eucharist is the beautiful parting gift of Jesus to the Church just before he died upon the cross. Through the Eucharist, Jesus is with us always until the end of time. Through the Eucharist, Jesus has an intimate unity with us, unlike any other possible unity. Through the Eucharist, we know the great love and mercy of God for us. And through the Eucharist we are strengthened by Christ himself so as to be the very presence of Christ in the world, because he is really present in us. Today’s Feast is a time to remember the deep meaning of the Holy Eucharist but it is also a day to be renewed in our love for the Eucharist, in our desire to receive Jesus in the Eucharist as often as possible, and in our reverence for the Holy Eucharist. This Friday, June 11, Dale Sisson of Christ the Good Shepherd Parish will be one of four men who will be ordained Permanent Dea- cons by Bishop Gruss. Dale’s Ordination will complete his years of discernment, formation, and study at the Diocese of Saginaw. Up- on being ordained a Deacon, Dale will begin his service to the Church as a cleric. He will formally commit his life to prayer and service. We will be having Deacon Dale as a part of our Pastoral Team to serve in a variety of ways in both of our parishes. You will notice him most at the weekend Masses where he will assist the presider. He will be able to give homilies, the first of which will be next weekend, June 12-13, at both parishes. He will be able to preside at Baptisms and Weddings. We take this opportunity to congratulate Deacon Dale and his wife, Cindy, on the occasion of his Ordination. We look forward to his Diaconal Service to our parishes. Fr. Bill PLEASE NOTE THE MASS TIME CHANGES BEGINNING NEXT WEEKEND: JUNE 11-12. We are adding another opportunity for Mass on Saturday evening and adjusting our Mass times. Now that our parish has been blessed to have another priest, Fr. Raj, we are in a position to add another weekend Mass. Our new Mass and Sacrament of Penance schedule is as follows: 4:00 p.m. Saturday evening Mass at St. John Paul II Parish 5:30 p.m. Saturday evening Mass at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. John Paul II Parish 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish. Each Saturday Mass will be preceded with an opportunity for Private Penance (Confession) 3:00-3:45 p.m. Confessions at St. John Paul II Parish 4:30-5:15 p.m. Confessions at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish Petition to Protect No Taxpayer Abortion The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funding of elective abortions and has been a provision in the federal govern- ment’s annual appropriations legislation for the last 45 years. Despite longstanding, bipartisan support for the amendment, and overwhelming public support as well, the amendment is in great danger of being repealed. It is critical that we send a strong message to Congress: our taxpayer dollars should NOT pay for abortion. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) encourages all Catholics to participate in this important, nationwide effort. Sign the petition online at NoTaxpayerAbortion.com today. Prayer Shawl Ministry At Christ the Good Shepherd we have a Prayer Shawl Ministry. The mission of the Prayer Shawl Ministry is to provide hope, comfort, and healing. The shawl is a unique way of reaching out to the community in a very tac- tile way. A Prayer Shawl can be seen as a symbolic “hug” from God. The Prayer Shawl Ministry brings together people who share a similar interest to share fellowship and to put to use the talent of knitting and crocheting to create Prayer Shawls that will be given to help spread the mes- sage of God’s mercy, love, and compassion. If you are interested in joining the Prayer Shawl Ministry, our next meeting is June 14. 6:30 p.m.; in the Fine Arts Building at Christ the Good Shepherd. If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Sisson at 989-792- 8665. Unite Our Nation Rosary Rally at Michigan’s State Capitol on Sunday, June 13 Unite Our Nation, founded by the laity, is a non-political or- ganization formed to help bring peace and prayer to local communities and healing to our nation. A local hour of prayer, including the rosary has been organized as Unite Michi- gan. Please join us on June 13, 3:00 pm in front of the steps at the Michigan State Capitol building in Lansing where we will be led in prayer by Fr. Derda. A public square rosary rally is a time to give witness to people of all races and beliefs, keep polarizing politics out, and focus on prayer to unite our nation. If you are interested in joining the leadership team or simply attending, please reach out to Sandra Sherwood at ejsherwood@charter.net. In the mean- time, take a look at the Unite Our Nation web- site uniteournation.net to learn more and get more details on the event! View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com
Know, Love and Serve as Jesus Did 4 ST. THOMAS, THE APOSTLE OF INDIA Dear Parishioners this is about the second Church which is built by St. Thomas the Apostle of India. 2. St.Thomas Syro – Malabar Catholic Church – Palayoor: The story of Palayoor Church of St. Thomas is perplexed and, to be frank, deals more with emotions than facts. According to millions of Christians of India, this is one of the world’s oldest churches, standing in this place since 52 AD. This church, definitely, has a long and interesting history. Palayoor Church is an ex- quisite structure with somewhat unusual architecture for Europeans – it unites the planning of Renaissance style and some features of Hindu temple architecture. The ornate church has a bell tower next to it and an opulent interior. After all, Christians in India feel that they need to compete with Hindu shrines which are some of the world’s most ornate structures. Around the church has been set a nice garden. Near the church are two rectangular ponds – most likely, witnesses of long-gone past, when there was a Hindu temple. Next to one pond – Bottukulam – stands an enormous statue of St. Thomas but in the other pond stands an imaginary replica of an old boat – a purported boat of Saint Thomas. Legend tells that Saint Thomas arrived here from Kottakkavu with a boat. In Palayoor in these times lived a group of Jews and local Brahmins. In the site of the present-day church was Hindu temple. Near the church are some broken relics of Hindu temple and remnants of an ancient synagogue. According to a legend, Saint Thomas observed how Brahmins were chanting mantras and throwing water in the air with their palms. He offered them to show that his prayer and God are a lot more powerful – if he would throw the water up, it would remain in the air. He did so – and water levitated in the air indeed. This act convinced both the Jews and Brahmins and they are baptized in the nearby temple tank. FR. RAJ View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com
5 Christ the Good Shepherd Parish & St. John Paul II Parish As the month of May transitions to June we Tori’s Corner leave behind that Spring month that is al- ways dedicated to the Blessed Mother of NEWS TO SHARE Jesus, but as Catholic Christians we recog- nize that her intercession is always crucial to the blessings that we know in life and to the blessings of eternity that we all long for, for ourselves and those we love. Wanting to honor Mary in a special way, it has been sug- gested that the statue of the Blessed Mother which has stood outside St Matthew's Church in Zilwaukee for decades could be relocated to the current St John Paul II parish site and placed in a bit of a grotto in the space between the church building and the rectory, Several gentlemen of the parish looked into this possibility with me last summer but found that we needed more time to plan for the move as the statue is actually secured to a pillar of concrete that is underground. I will be discussing this issue with those parishioners who had discussed it with me Congratulations to Ron & Jan Bender celebrating their “50th” last year in the days ahead but also want to invite other parish- wedding anniversary this weekend! Ron & Jan were married on ioners in St John Paul II or Christ the Good Shepherd parishes to June 5, 1971 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church by Rev. Fr. James participate in this labor of love for the Virgin Mary by assisting Petricevic. They have 4 children: Julie (Jeff) Arens, Ronald Paul in the moving of the statue or clearing out that area between Bender, Ryan Bender, and Jill Bender. They also have one the church and rectory so that there is a dignified place to place grandson, Wyatt Arens. When asked what is the secret to a the statue when it is moved. The area will not only need to be long marriage the couple answered “You have to have the Lord cleaned up some but will also need to have a faithful team of in your marriage. It takes 3.” May the Lord Jesus continue to people to maintain it. If you are interested in assisting with this bless you both, your family, and continue to keep you in His effort please call either parish office and share your interest love that you may live out the sacred bond of Holy Matrimony. with the office staff so that we can plan to accomplish this task Congratulations!! this Summer. Thank you in advance for your interest and help in this matter. Blessings on your week! Speaking of how we honor the Saints and worship God in our traditions as Catholics, Fr Pat O'Connor, from the Diocesan Office of Liturgy, will be joining us at 6:30pm on Tuesday, June 15th in Christ the Good Shepherd Church to discuss the guide- lines and recommendations of how we enhance our worship spaces with plants, flowers and other enhancements through- out the seasons of the Church year. The Art and Environment members from both parishes will be attending but I want to invite the parishes at large so that we all have a better idea of why we do what we do with the physical interiors of our church buildings and because Fr Pat is a very dynamic and enjoyable presenter. Please join us on the evening of the 15th for your personal enrichment or if you are considering becoming part of the Art and Environment teams for either parish as we are al- ways looking for generous spirited individuals to share their time and talent in a way that benefits all of us. May the pres- ence of Christ in the Eucharist that we have celebrated this weekend bring blessings to your week. Hank Messing View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com
