W e look forward to welcoming everyone to Desert International Horse Park for the upcoming National Sunshine Series competition. For us, and we hope for trainers, exhibitors, sponsors, vendors, and our team, this is not just another trip to “Thermal,” but the beginning of a new chapter for these significant fall and winter circuits that occur in the amazing Greater Palm Springs desert setting. Since the ownership transition occurred in early August, we have been busy preparing for the upcoming 2019/2020 season, as well as detailing plans for the longer term development of the facility, enhancement of the competition, and improvement of the on-site experience. Even in a short period of time, we believe we are making important changes that you will recognize immediately. As we make these changes, we do so with a keen focus on working from a horse first perspective. Every change we make will take your horses into consideration, so you feel confident about coming to our events. A few things to highlight: Making footing a top priority, we are working with ESI International. We will do everything possible to improve the footing for this season, plus begin an extensive plan to change the ring layout and then completely replace the footing. We will upgrade the entrance areas in front of each ring, as well as add more shade for horses. And in the show rings, you’ll notice we’ve begun the process to replace the jumps for both hunters and jumpers. You’ll recognize some new faces, and importantly, some familiar faces. We tried to bring together the best, and add deep expertise to our efforts. The new faces include Phil DeVita, show manager; Brett Waters, show secretary; and Alan Wade, technical coordinator. The familiar faces include Chris Mayone, Brian Morris, and yes, of course, a few Canadians. We have worked hard to address many of the schedule requests that have been sent our way, and as an overall principle we have added rings to end the day earlier as well as build in a shorter day for Sunday. We are excited about the group of judges, course designers, and announcers we have signed up for the two weeks. Some of the additional schedule changes include the addition of the USHJA 3’3” Hunter Seat Medal, a Friday Derby Day which includes a USHJA National Hunter Derby and USHJA JR/AO Derby for both weeks and a Sunday 9 AM USHJA International Hunter Derby for week 2, and of course, the CSI3* and CSI3*-W. These two weeks will be about celebrating the beginning of this journey. The truth is, and why we are so driven to make our vision a reality, we are just like so many of you. We have been involved in countless discussions about our sport. We put horses first. We ride, own, and cherish these animals. We live on the West Coast. And we want change. We do ask for your patience as it will take time to build our - and your - vision. But know that working collaboratively with equestrians and their horses is our ultimate goal. And we aim for a memorable experience for all. Most sincerely, Steve Hankin
We’d like to express our sincere appreciation to Tom and his team for all their support in completing our acquisition of the West Coast circuit shows and facility. - ST E VE HANKI N
