The Rotarian family comes together Eure Redaktion in Hamburg not only to exchange ideas, but also to celebrate Junge Segler old friendships and create new ones. The main articles auf dem Wasser in this issue (pages 6 – 15) are written in English in order to in Großkneten paint a picture of what Rotaract in Germany is like. Also, throughout the issue, English articles are marked with a cranberry coloured bar. THEME | 06 2018/19 RI CONVENTION HAMBURG Dear Rotaractors, Rotarians and friends I t’s my pleasure to welcome you to the beautiful city of Hamburg and to be one of your Gastgeber (Ger- man for “hosts”)! At Conventions I make a point of meeting new people, to do something I never tried before, and to step out of my comfort zone. Let me give you some simple ideas on how to make your stay in Hamburg an unforgett- able one: Make a point of meeting someone: who speaks a different language ... who lives in a neighboring country ... whose country you would dream of visiting ... whose club name you can’t pronounce ... Learn something new at a breakout session (maybe attend a session that has a funny title and see what hap- « pens!) and widen your Rotary horizon. When music is played in the plenary session jump up and dance with Rotarian friends from around the world! Something else I discovered: you are never alone. Everywhere I went I met Rotaractors that are open, keen Exchanging pins to learn, love to help and are very good at partying. I’m really looking forward to the upcoming week! I wish and celebrating all of us a wonderful Preconvention & Convention ’19. friendship Yours in Rotaract Phillip Franke | HOC Preconvention Chair and Club Hamburg-City member 7

Professional development, social projects and events as well as networking and socializing make Rotaract unique and special. Every year, there’s a special social topic, all German clubs commit to: this years “Beealive” aims to save the wild bees and raise awareness of bee mortality. ROTARACT GERMANY CONFERENCE (DEUKO) – Held every year, this is the biggest quorate panel and the general meeting. Next to the plenum, social projects and partying play a role as well. ROTARACT GERMANY COMMITEE (RDK) – The managing board of the MDIO “Rotaract Ger- many” is a service and information panel consisting of district and department representatives. HISTORY – RAC Marburg was the first Rotaract club founded in Germany in 1968. FACTS – There are more than 190 Rotaract Clubs in Germany with more than 3,500 members with almost 50% gender equality. THEME | 06 2018/19 BEST ACT The best part of life is sharing it The “BestAct” has been awarded since 2007 at the Rotaract Germany Conference (DeuKo) to social projects or events organized and/or conducted by Rotaract clubs, Interact clubs, or districts that distinguish them- selves by their purpose, intensity, or organization of other social activities. The prize is granted regularly by the “Development association of the Rotaract clubs of German districts“. The preselection of the best pro- jects is made by a three-member jury consisting of a designated member of the association, the chairman of the Rotaract Germany Committee and a member of the social department. The best project is selected by the plenum at DeuKo, where the award ceremony also takes place. 2019 • DISTRICT 1820 – “PAUL” WATER-BACKPACK Starting two years ago, the collaboration project of the districts 1820 and 4195 grew with the support of Rotary and a “Global Grant”. A PAUL converts water into drin- king water and can be transported by one person. More than 35 PAULS have already been delivered to Mexico by Rotaractors. 2018 • RAC BREMERHAVEN-GEESTLAND – SWIMMING LESSONS Every second German pupil in primary school is not a “safe swimmer”. Time to address this issue: the Rotaractors from Bremerhaven organized a basic swimming lesson for children to earn their first „swimming certificates”. 30 pupils from ages six to ten learned how to swim and be safe in water. 2017 • RAC KARLSRUHE – SHELTERBOX CHALLENGE “ShelterBox” is providing emergency shelters and tools for families who have lost their ho- mes because of disasters. The RAC Karlsruhe helped raise awareness and fund money for this organization: eight groups competed in a city rally in Karlsruhe while carrying a green ShelterBox. 2016 • RAC JENA – DOWN SYNDROME IN KOSOVO How is it possible to improve the pedagogical and therapeutic situation of those af- fected by Down syndrome in Kosovo as they are excluded from daily life and public Grafik: Lisa Pusch | Icons – svg repo support? The RAC Jena organized two seminars with professional experts teaching more than 100 teachers and parents in Kosovo to learn routines and techniques. 2015 • DISTRICT 1870 – DISTRICT 1870 FOR MOLDOVA The project’s aim was to collect clothing for the organization “Copceak” as well as to create awareness for the political and social situation in Moldova as it is one of the poorest countries in Europe. A team of Rotaractors travelled to Moldova to help build a playground and help locally. 10
