                          MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Tēnā koutou katoa

April 29 has seen the reopening of Ōhaupō School for 7 Ruru Learners at Alert Level 3. We are
following all of the CoVID 19 Alert Level 3 Health and Safety Guidelines. This includes an on-
site contact register and parents of our Ruru learners must also keep a contact register in/ if a
suspected case of CoVID 19 is detected on site or through parental contacts in their extended
bubble.

We are extremely grateful to Mrs Mc Robbie, Miss Julian and Mrs Lawn for teaching and
managing the bubble in the Totara Hub. Joining them onsite is either Mrs Gibson or Mrs Cowan
in the office, Mr Barry Bindon our Property Manager and myself. Service support personnel are
only permitted with prior organisation. No other personnel including parents are to enter the
school site. Information referring to the onsite organisation is available on the school website
for your reference – refer to Letter to Parents of students returning.

I cannot express how grateful I am to the vast majority of you who have managed to make
different arrangements and extend your bubble slightly to enable your child to continue their
learning online or through home packs. Your generous actions allow us to minimise the number
of Ruru learners and staff we need to protect on site and potentially reduces any potential
isolation and contract tracing if we were unfortunate enough to have an infection or close contact
happen in our school bubble. This also means we can support teachers to continue to work from
home and focus fully on distance learning. To those parents who have requested additional
learning packs for Ruru Learners in Kowhai Hub - these are available each day from 10a.m.-
2p.m. outside the school office from Wednesday 29 – Friday 1 May 2020.

Learning for most of our Ruru Learners will continue the same in Alert Level 3 as in Alert Level
4. Teachers are in contact with you frequently and online tools are enabling regular communica-
tion and support for your learners. We have appreciated your positive feedback. Please remember
there are no hard and fast rules with your child’s learning in this current situation. Each family is
different. It is O.K. to do what you can when you can. Wellbeing is the key for all.

Check out Super Felix- a new digital picture book from award-winning illustrator, Phoebe
Morris, designed to help families talk to their children about the COVID-19 pandemic, and what
they can do to help keep themselves and others safe. Super Felix is available as a free to down-
load PDF/EBook from Morris’ website https://phoebemorriscreative.com/superfelix The picture
book aims to engage children on an emotional level and ease the fear they might be experiencing
during a confusing time for everyone, big and small.

For a change have a look at the Ministry of Education and TVNZ who have produced six, 30-
minute STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) lessons for a programme aimed at
years 4-8 called Breaking It Down. Developed in line with the New Zealand national curriculum,
nanotechnologist and science educator Dr Michelle Dickinson, will be presenting lessons on
different science topics. Each episode will involve fun hands-on experiments that can be done at
home to keep the practical side of lessons alive. She will also interview a real scientist or engi-
neer in the field about what they do for a job to help students see role models and career path-
ways.

Finally, take time to check out all of the awesome commemorations that occurred in our commu-
nity to acknowledge ANZAC Day. It was fantastic to see how the ‘spirit of Anzac’ lives on to-
day.

      BULB ORDER

Thank you for your support and orders. It will be great to see such amazing colour
popping up in the community. The bulbs are coming, as like most businesses they were
not able to collect together our orders over Level 4 but are now looking at working through
all the orders. Please note that this will take a bit longer than normal, due to the added
Covid-19 operating restrictions but they are working vigorously to get all orders out as fast
as possible.

As soon as these arrive we will be in touch to arrange a contactless pickup or drop off.

Once again thanks for your amazing support.
