OUR MISSION: The Community of St. Mary, a diverse people sharing a common pilgrim journey within the Catholic Church, committed to following Jesus’ commandment to love God, love neighbors and go make disciples. May 9, 2021 | 6th Sunday of Easter Mother’s Day For all mothers: That they may be supported and encouraged in their special vocation of love; we pray to the Lord. That all might treasure and support God’s plan for life and love; we pray to the Lord. For all mothers: That their children will honor their many sacrifices by lives of service and virtue; we pray to the Lord. For mothers facing unexpected pregnancies: That they may find strength and courage in the example of our Blessed Mother; we pray to the Lord. For all mothers awaiting the birth of their children: That the Lord pro- tect them and bring their babies to safe delivery; we pray to the Lord. For all married couples struggling to have a child: That the Lord grant them peace as they hope for the gift of a son or daughter; we pray to the Lord. For all those longing to welcome a child through adoption: May the Lord guide their journey and grant them peace along the way; we pray to the Lord. For mothers who mourn the loss of a child: That they may find peace and consolation in the hope of eternal life; we pray to the Lord. Welcome to St. Mary! We’d love you to connect with us! A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The following is an excerpt from Father Harold A. Buetow’s pastoral talk about motherhood. I thought it would be good to share it with you on this special day for our mothers: A scholar once defined motherhood in his lecture: "A woman who, having provided an ovum that is subsequently fertilized by an external agent, prepares it for the infusion of a soul and nurtures it from her own bodily substance till it can be physically separated from her." A woman from the audience commented not so subtly: "Obviously, this poor fellow never had a mother." There is no theoretical definition that can capture the depth of motherhood. Only words spoken from the bottom of the heart can come close to giving justice to its meaning. Sometimes the best way to know what a thing is, we ask what it does. And this is especially true with motherhood. What does a mother do then? First of all, she loves. This world will never fully know how much of the heroism and success of men and women is traceable to the inspiration of a mother's love. A mother's love is not only strong, unselfish, and undying, but a constant inspiration for a son or daughter to do always what's right, pure, and noble. A mother's love causes her to nurture. She gives her very blood to our making, her milk to our nursing, her sweat to our rearing, and her tears to our straying. She risks her life bearing us, and she spends her life bearing with us. A mother also unconditionally accepts. She realizes that she didn't select her children; they are entrusted to her by God, in all their uniqueness and frailties. Her loving makes her realize that her children's silence can cover quiet desperation, and their rebellion can be a plea for help. She instinctively knows that the most trying situations may be the very times when communication is most important. A mother knows the need to forgive always. From minor irritations to major offenses children need to be forgiven. A loving response does not exclude just punishment, but there is no place in her heart for resentment. To all the mothers today: Mom, thank you for your great love. No one and nothing can take your place in our hearts. On behalf of all the children, I greet you: HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Sincerely Yours In Christ, Fr. Burt Absalon, Pastor 2 | St. Mary Parish · Woodstock, Illinois
