Prayers for the Morning The Minister shall read aloud these Sentences of the Scriptures that follow. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Psalm 96:9 Speak Lord, for your servant is listening: you have the words of eternal life. See 1 Samuel 3.9; John 6.68 1st Hymn #9 (Common Praise - Canada) Today I awake and God is before me. At night, as I dreamt, he summoned the day; for God never sleeps, but patterns the morning with slithers of gold or glory in grey. Today I arise and Christ is beside me, He walked through the dark to scatter new light. Yes, Christ is alive, and beckons his people to hope and to heal, resist and invite. Today I affirm the Spirit within me at worship and work, in struggle and rest. The Spirit inspires all life which is changing from fearing to faith, from broken to blest. Today I enjoy the Trinity round me, above and beneath, before and behind; the Maker, the Son, the Spirit together— they called me to life and call me their friend. The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation.
DEARLY beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness of the same by his infinite goodness and mercy. A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the Minister. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, By what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, That we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, To the glory of your name. Amen. The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone. The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. Minister. O Lord, open thou our lips; People. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Minister. We wait for the Lord, People. Our souls wait, and in God’s word we hope. Minister. Ours souls wait for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, People. More than those who watch for the morning. Minister. In faith, let us turn to our God, whose love is sure.
Canticle JUBILATE said together. Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know this: The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us, and we are his; We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and call upon his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his faithfulness endures from age to age. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. PSALM 130 said together.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The First Lesson. 2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27 Première lecture. 2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27 Read by Jane Needles-Bradley Lue par Jane Needles-Bradley After the death of Saul, when David had returned Après la mort de Saül, David, qui avait battu les from defeating the Amalekites, David remained Amalécites, était revenu à Tsiklag et il y passa deux two days in Ziklag. Canticle A PRAYER OF PROTECTION -St. Augustine of Hippo- said together Blessed are all your saints, O God and King, who have travelled over the tempestuous sea of this mortal life, and have arrived at the harbour of peace and felicity. Watch over us who are still in our dangerous voyage; and remember such as lie exposed to the rough storms of trouble and temptations. Frail is our vessel, and the ocean is wide; but in your mercy you have set our course, So steer the vessel of our life toward the everlasting shore of peace, And bring us at length to the quiet haven of our hearts desire, Where thou, O God, are blessed; who lives and reigns for ever and ever. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Second Lesson. 2 Corinthians 8:7-15 Deuxième lecture. 2 Corinthiens 8 :7-15 Read by Veronique Robert Lue par Veronique Robert Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, De votre côté, vous avez tout en abondance: la foi, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love la parole, la connaissance, le zèle à tout point de for you—so we want you to excel also in this vue et l’amour pour nous. Faites en sorte que la generous undertaking. I do not say this as a même abondance se manifeste dans cet acte de command, but I am testing the genuineness of your grâce. Je ne dis pas cela pour donner un ordre, love against the earnestness of others. For you mais pour éprouver la sincérité de votre amour par know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, l’exemple du zèle des autres. En effet, vous that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he connaissez la grâce de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ: became poor, so that by his poverty you might pour vous il s'est fait pauvre alors qu'il était riche, become rich. And in this matter I am giving my afin que par sa pauvreté vous soyez enrichis. C'est advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year un avis que je donne à ce sujet et c'est ce qui vous not only to do something but even to desire to do convient, puisque dès l'année dernière vous avez something—now finish doing it, so that your été les premiers non seulement à faire une collecte, eagerness may be matched by completing it mais aussi à la vouloir. Menez-la donc maintenant according to your means. For if the eagerness is à bien afin que sa réalisation corresponde, en there, the gift is acceptable according to what one fonction de vos moyens, à l'empressement que has—not according to what one does not have. I vous avez mis à la vouloir. Quand la bonne do not mean that there should be relief for others volonté existe, on est bien accueilli en fonction de and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair ce que l'on a, et non de ce que l'on n'a pas. En balance between your present abundance and their effet, il ne s'agit pas de vous exposer à la détresse need, so that their abundance may be for your pour en soulager d'autres, mais de suivre un need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As principe d’égalité: dans les circonstances actuelles it is written, "The one who had much did not have votre abondance pourvoira à leurs besoins, afin too much, and the one who had little did not have que leur abondance aussi pourvoie à vos besoins. too little." C'est ainsi qu'il y aura égalité, conformément à ce qui est écrit: Celui qui avait ramassé beaucoup n'avait rien de trop et celui qui avait ramassé peu ne manquait de rien. Jesus, the very thought of thee, with sweetness fills the breast; but sweeter far thy face to see, and in thy presence rest. No voice can sing, no heart can frame, nor can the mind recall a sweeter sound than Jesus’ name, the Saviour of us all. O hope of every contrite heart, O joy of all the meek; to those who ask, how kind thou art, how good to those who seek! But what to those who find? Ah, this nor tongue nor pen can show; the love of Jesus, what it is none but his lovers know. Jesus, our only joy be thou, as thou our prize wilt be; in thee be all our glory now, and through eternity. The Third Lesson. Mark 5:21-43 Troisième lecture. La femme, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, effrayée et tremblante, sachant ce qui lui était and told him the whole truth. He said to her, arrivé, vint se jeter à ses pieds et lui dit toute la "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in vérité. Amen. The Second Collect, for Peace. O GOD, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom stands our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom: Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Third Collect, for Grace. O LORD our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. OUR LORD Jesus Christ said: hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. Intercessions A General Thanksgiving, to be said by the Minister and people together Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all you have done for us. We thank you for the splendour of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side. We thank you for setting us tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone. Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know Christ and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen. A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom. ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. Poem The Raising of Jairus’s Daughter Margaret MacKinnon
Read by the Rev’d Gwenda Wells You have to imagine it, as they all did: It was as if He’d come to her in a dream. The walls of the space where the dead girl lay were like water, wavering, like the reflection of water, blue like the blue at the beginning of night. And the light blazed and bent when His voice arrived, making a symbol of sound: Talitha koum! Little girl, I say to you, arise! Who can know what they were thinking— but I think she rose and they all danced, the music her much-loved life— and that chance to come back. Changed. So I think, too, of Mary, another young girl, home from college, her feet bare, ready to dance, though she’s seated on the steps of the great, galleried house. Her summer hours flame in that smile— and yes, there will be later mornings— years when she is frail. Forgetting. So much that will be broken. But as if nothing were ever lost to time, all that is luminous gathers, now, in the hands she clasps in her lap. Little girl, I say to you, arise! Across Mary’s yellow fields, the sounds
of other lives— of rain, of distance. But here with her, these certain reassurances— songs of a mourning dove that rise and mark the air. Acclamation Minister. Come to me and listen to my words; hear me, and you shall have life. People. Come to me and listen to my words; hear me, and you shall have life. Minister. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the simple. People. Hear me, and you shall have life. Minister. The statutes of the Lord are right and rejoice the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure and gives light to the eyes. People. Hear me, and you shall have life. Minister. The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. People. Hear me, and you shall have life. Minister. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey dripping from the honeycomb. People. Come to me and listen to my words; hear me, and you shall have life. Blessing
Minister. The Lord bless you and keep you: People. Amen Minister. The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you: People. Amen. Minister. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace: People. Amen. Minister. The Lord God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, guard you, save you, and bring you to that heavenly city, where he lives and reigns for ever and ever. People. Amen. Concluding Hymn #306 (Common Praise-Church of England) O for a thousand tongues to sing my dear Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace. Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; 'tis music in the sinner's ears, 'tis life, and health, and peace. He speaks, and, listening to his voice, new life the dead receive, the mournful broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe.
Hear him, ye deaf, ye voiceless ones, your loosened tongues employ; ye blind, behold your Saviour come, and leap, ye lame, for joy! My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honours of thy name. Dismissal Minister. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord People. Thanks be to God
