                             District Governors Message

May is gone and June is here. Now I’m remembering a song from my long-ago youth – “Oh where,
oh where has my little dog gone”. However, I will translate that to – “Oh where, oh where has my year
gone”. And like that old song I’ll be remembering this past year for a long time.
These past 11 months have had its ups and downs. My goals were to have an increase in member-
ship and add clubs; but, that was not to be. With the work of PDG John Harker’s team we were able to add
the Bedford Lioness Lions Club. But we have lost the Chestnut Ridge Lions Club because they dissolved their
membership and we have another club close to being dropped. I am still hopeful that we can do something
to keep this club active. Covid has created problems for all our clubs this year. Clubs have been unable to
meet very often and many of their activities have had to be cancelled. I am incredibly grateful to see that
things are improving. Clubs have been able to start meeting and holding activities again.
In June I have a few clubs to visit and will have the privilege of installing their newly elected officers.
DGE Gary Shetter and I are planning for our banner exchange and year-end get-together. We will be for-
warding information about the time and place to you later this month. There are a lot of people who went
above and beyond their role as a Lion to help me throughout this year and my heartfelt thanks goes out to
them. I ask that you help DGE Gary as much as you can. That is always part of our job. No matter how little
you may think what you are doing helps, it always makes a huge difference. My thanks goes out to every
Lion for all that you did in the name of Lionism, whether your participation was large or small. My best
wishes to all our members and clubs for a prosperous year and especially to our DGE Gary Shetter. I need to
say a special thank you to the Williamsburg Lions Club, my home club, for all their support. And, needless to
say, I owe a special thank you to my family for all their help during this difficult year.
In the future, if you have any questions or concerns that I can help you with, please don’t hesitate to
contact me. I will try to get you answers as soon as possible. Remember to stay safe and always remember
that KINDNESS MATTERS and that God loves all of us the same.

 Jim

FROM THE DESK OF OUR 1ST VICE-DISTRICT GOVERNOR
Greetings fellow Lions! As I sat down to pen what will be the last installment to the newsletter as your 1 st
Vice District Governor, I began telling you about training and other things I’ve been working on during the
month of May. But then I thought wait a second, why should I bore you with that as I’ve already shared my
schedule and some of the things I’m doing, so I decided to get a little philosophical this month and give you a
little insight on how I think and how I plan to approach my year as your District Governor. Here goes.
I have always enjoyed reading. My favorite books are biographies, memoirs or self- help motivational
books. My schedule over the past several years has dampened my ability to read because by the time I get
home in the evening and finish the day's work, I’m just too tired to sit and read. I also spend more time on
the road these days than I did several years ago. I have Sirius radio in my vehicles and have fallen in love with
channel 63, The Message. It’s a Christian radio station and although I’m a rocker at heart, (being a child of the
60’s and 70’s), I have found new Christian music to not only be enjoyable but uplifting and inspirational as
well. However, I still had that need for reading so, several months ago I purchased Audio books! What a won-
derful way to use a cell phone! Now I can drive and have someone read to me so my hours spent behind the
wheel become productive. I learn and grow as I drive!
I have listened to several books while making the treks to Altoona and the other places I go; some of them
twice as a matter of fact. I’m currently listening to “Success through a PMA” and I felt a direct correlation to
how this book and its teachings can help not only in personal and professional life but in Lion's life as well.
We are coming out of a really dismal year and we have experienced a lot of NMA in the world around us. The
use of PMA can help us all recover and move forward with a new outlook on life, an outlook that can spill
over to Lions in many ways!
We have a problem in Lionism not only in the entire U.S. but also in our district. The problem is declining
membership and the lack of leadership development. Perhaps NMA has led to this decline. We may tell our
friends and acquaintances we are Lions and we need them to join, but we don’t tell them using PMA why
they need to join! We all have stories to tell of “why” we became Lions and the wonderful experiences we’ve
had being a Lion, but we fail to tell those stories. Instead, we tell them about the meetings and the meals and
the time we spend being Lions. Isn’t it wonderful to see people’s smiles again? Isn’t it wonderful to shake an-
other’s hand or give someone a hug? The masks are going away and when we greet our friends and neigh-
bors we can smile and greet them warmly. We can greet them with PMA and tell them about “why” we are
Lions and the wonderful experiences we’ve had being a Lion. This will bring in members! Not using NMA and
scaring them with stories of meeting after meeting they should attend. Instead, we need to share stories of
our experiences and fun we’ve had being a Lion. I would absolutely love to hear all your stories and I ask if
you are willing, please send me an email telling me of a heartwarming experience you’ve had while being a
Lion. If you don’t have email, send me a letter or give me a call. I think it would be so cool to build a collection
of Lions stories from 14L not only to share with the district but with other Lions. Sure, we can all talk about
how we impact our local communities through monetary donations, but we seldomly share how we impact
through the heart; let’s share with others the wonderful, fun work we do. I believe that people still care and I
believe this is a way we can gain membership. That’s PMA!

We really need to develop leadership in our District. I’m sure you’re aware we have no 1st Vice DG, or
2nd vice DG. Many of you may fear the time requirement involved or the commitment of being part of
the district leadership team. Believe me, I had the same concerns. But here’s the thing, our district is
chock full of dedicated Lions who are here to help in any way and are willing and waiting to stand be-
side you and give you the guidance and support required to be in this role. Sure, you or I will face ob-
stacles but by using PMA, any obstacle can be turned into a highlight and benefit not only you but the
district as a whole. I encourage anyone reading this newsletter who has the urge or feels something
tugging at their heart to get involved, please reach out to me through email, phone, or letter so we can
meet and have a conversation. Maybe you’re not ready to commit next year or even the year after that
but we will still need leaders 5 years from now and beyond. Let’s start planning today for tomorrow.
I know I’ve rambled on a bit in this letter. I’m sorry if I’ve bored you or if you think I’m a bit off my
rocker. I’ve gone on about PMA and NMA and for those of you who haven’t figured it out, PMA stands
for Positive Mental Attitude and of course NMA is Negative Mental Attitude. I feel attitude is important
not only because of the year we have just endured but also the years ahead. We have just endured the
most Negative year I’ve ever experienced for sure! But, if we look at all the experiences and changes
we’ve encountered over the past year or so, we can still find many, many positives. I truly believe that
any negative situation can be turned into a positive situation just by looking at it, studying it and using
a positive mental attitude to turn it around. I also truly believe we can do that here in District 14L. I in-
tend on using that outlook as I lead you though the coming year and I trust all of you will join me with
your outlook.
In closing, please feel free to share your opinion of not only my thoughts but any thoughts and ide-
as you may have to help grow our district and help spread the news about all the wonderful things we
do as Lions. I’m open to any and all suggestions or comments. And again, please share with me your
stories. No names will be used, of course, but we need not only each other but others in our communi-
ties to know why we are Lions and why “WE SERVE”.
I can’t wait to read them!

Yours in Lionism,
