COMMODORE’S REPORT Hello again, fellow OBC members, I hope you are all in good health avoiding those winter chills and ills. I’ve just received a reminder notice from Warren Hay Marine that it was time I had my outboard motor serviced. I thought I would take the opportunity to remind you all that this is the time of year when it is a good idea to catch up with the maintenance of our boats, trailers and fishing equipment. I’ll tell you why. I was out fishing for Tarakihi (yes it’s spelt right) with a couple of mates about a month ago. Two of us were using those Tarakihi terror flashers and were catching the fish while our other mate wasn’t using them and wasn’t catching much, so being mates I dived into my tackle box and gave him my spare flasher. He was soon catching good fish and we were all happy. 4392 Only thing is I must buy another couple of those flasher rigs because the barracuda just bit off my last one and I don’t want to be caught out next time the Tarakihi are biting. Also I understand that if you are towing your boat and are involved in an accident and don’t have a current Warrant of Fitness and registration, the insurance company doesn’t have to pay out because you shouldn’t have been on the road without a Warrant of Fitness and registration. I hope you have noticed how nice the garden at the end of the wash down area is. Thank you to those committee members who arranged that and had a part in making it look so good. Some of our older committee members are thinking of resigning from the committee after years of selfless voluntary work and health problems. Maybe you have considered stepping up and doing a spell on the committee. If so our AGM comes up on Wednesday 26 th September and you could register your interest by completing the nomination form in this magazine. I heard about a man who went into hospital for an operation. He was hungry when he got there and asked what was for dinner. They told him “soup”. He said, “soup, that’s it, soup! I don’t feel like soup”. They said to him “well that’s all there is. Take it or leave it”. He replied, “oh, forget it.” Later that evening they gave him an injection which half zonked him out and then they gave him an enema to pump him out before the operation. Next morning after the operation he wakes up and looks across the ward at another patient and asks him if he’s come in for an operation. The man says, “Yes”. He then says to the guy. “Let me give you a bit of advice, if they offer you the soup, take it, because later on they try to stuff it up your backside!” Well that’s enough from me. Look forward to seeing you at the AGM. I understand Ingrid Visser of Orca Research is to be the guest speaker. West Hill Commodore 5

PROPERTY AND WORKS REPORT Hi to all. Another year down the tube with of course many more to come. The ramps and parking area are firing well. I wish the same could be said for our elusive fish. Mind you, this time of the year is the time to regroup your tackle etc in readiness for the coming sea- son. This year saw little action (upgrades) at the ramps, parking areas, se- curity fences, security cameras, main gate and no storm damage. However certain areas will soon need attention and they are. 1. Ramps. The ramp closest to the main road. The lower end needs attention and is not going to be an easy fix, as it spends most of its life submerged. To sort out the damage we need it dry even at the lowest of tides. Does anyone have a big bucket and an empty drum to bail the water into while we replace the concrete. What a useless idea! A design is in hand and will mean the ramp will be out of action for some time, but there is a long way to go yet. We would like to in- crease the length of the ramps by at least two metres. This would remove the danger of backing off the ramp at low tide. On a .2 low tide the ends of the ramps are almost exposed and dropping your trailer over the end is not a good practise. It makes it difficult to re- trieve your boat and in some cases you could be stranded and have to wait for the tide to rise. Mud at this stage will always be a problem as we are not able to remove the mud that would cover the extended ramps. I do have a solution. Try not return at a very low tide! 2. Security fence. It is like me and parts of it are showing its age in the form of rust. This will need addressing as does the far eastern side closest to the breakwater. Does anyone know who owns the two dinghies that are leaning and chained to our fence? They need to be removed but we would like to know who owns them. Another cause of concern is the Council’s greenery growing through the fence. We want that tidied up. We have approached the Council and we are under the impression that the Council will soon be doing a large 7
upgrade on the waste station which will include the removal of this greenery. 3. Parking. There has been a huge improvement. However, if the NIWA representatives want to check your catch, please avoid the yellow NP area at the top of the ramps. Move further forward out of the area. If it is very busy and you are happy to show them your catch, you may have to move outside or park in the main compound. Remember they are not the fish police, they are after statistics. Well that is about it from me. The AGM is just around the corner. You are all welcome. Finally, I want to thank those dedicated sloggers (Mud Skippers) who turn up once a month to remove the mud and green al- gae. Many thanks. Regards to all, Noel Klein. CLUB CAPTAIN REPORT AUGUST 2018 Hi to all our members, It has been a good year with a number of new members joining, also some have left. We have new members on the committee and they are working well. There have been some improvements in the sur- rounds at the ramps. Thanks to Noel Klein and helpers. A big job is in the pipeline for ramp work- Noel will be overseeing that work. An acquaintance of mine was telling me that he and his wife have been working with a group and NIWA, to rejuvenate the sea grass in the harbour. The manufacturing changes at Portland have helped a lot and now the sea grass is recovering in a big way. They say the snapper fishing in the harbour is improving with catches around Kiss- ing Point. Also the Waikaraka/Onerahi reserve is improving in num- bers and species of flounder. The pipi’s at Mayor Bank are on the increase. I see the go-ahead has been given for the Refinery New Zealand to deepen and realign Whangarei’s harbour entrance by 2020. I guess we will watch and see if any negative effect will follow. Graham Sinclair hosts the T.V. show “Ocean Bounty”. This group of marine biologists is studying habitat and environmental relation- ships across various species of fish and within a species. They are working on breeding fish to suit the various environments. Some are working on sedimentation solutions and the impact thereof. Land owners and councils all have a part to contribute to marine en- vironment, not to mention boaties and fishermen. Well, so far we are enjoying a reasonable winter. May the Spring be a good one and we can all have some good boating and fishing. Thank you to all members for doing their bit to keep the facility clean and functioning well. Jim Pram. 13
