KIA ORA KOUTOU 29 July 2021 # 22 Kia Ora Koutou Katoa Rāpare 29 Hōngongoi ~Thursday 29th July 2021 Welcome to term three of our school year. On Monday we welcomed Floris, Nate, Charli, Nixon and Hunter to Manuka and Jayden, Joseph, and Addison to Kahikatea. We wish you all the very best with your schooling at Ōhope Beach School. The Olympics have provided some excitement to the children for the start of the term with the fantastic achievement of Hayden Wilde who won a bronze medal in the triathlon event. With the weather on Monday being so wet and windy the children could not get outside and were keen to cheer the competitors in the triathlon and the surfing. It is with regret that we received the resignation of Whaea Kirsty at the end of Term 2. Whaea Kirsty joined Ohope Beach School at the start of 2020 and was on leave last term. We wish her all the best for the future. Whaea Merissa will continue as the teacher in Kahikatea until the end of the school year. Pride Time: The children continue to model our PRIDE values at school and enjoy the opportunity to celebrate their achievements. On the last day of term two our Pride winners made pikelets with Mrs Hanlen and Mrs Naera. The children enjoyed this activity and eating their yummy pikelets. Leadership Development: This week our “Pitopito Korero” presenters have been Ava, Cassie and Kailah from Ngā Huiarau. The girls have continued to lead the full karakia and have introduced our whakataukī for the week. “Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te iwi”. With your basket and my basket, the people will live. We are very proud of the children for taking up this challenge and for speaking with clarity and confidence.
Playground: The new playground is now complete, and the children were finally able to use it from Tuesday. The children are so excited, and it is a hive of activity at the moment. The swings are very popular, and the children are working out systems for sharing these. The playground is available to children in Ngā Peka and Ngā Huiarau as the various pieces of equipment are more suitable to the older students. We do still have the perimeter of the playground fenced off as grass seed has been sown following the building work. Thank you all for your patience during term two when the construction work was going on. Book Fair: Thank you for your support of the recent Book Fair. The school received $600 from the sales which will go towards new books for the school library. We do hope your children all enjoyed their new books over the holiday break. Term Three Curriculum: This term the children will have another science focus related to our local environment. The learning will be related to Moutohora and Whakaari, two natural land features visible from the school. The learning will also include local stories about these land features, iwi connections and the science related to both islands. Later in the term we will be presenting our school production. Students and staff will be working together to bring a unique presentation to the audience. We have a number of sports fixtures this term with the first being the EBOP 7’s tournament which includes Netball, Football and Rugby and is for children Year 3 to Year 6. A notice went home yesterday to those children who have expressed an interest in competing. This event is planned for Thursday 12th August. We have a focus on fitness through skipping this term and the house group activity for the term will relate to this. Teacher Development Day: Our last teacher development day for the year will be on Wednesday 11th August. All schools in our Community of Learning will be involved in this day which continues our Iwi Connection development. There will be no school on this day. DISCO: Next Thursday there will be a disco for the children, held here at school in the hall. Year 1 to year 3 children have their Disco from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. Year 4 to year 6 children have their Disco from 6.15pm to 7.15pm. Thank you to the group of parents who are working on this, we look forward to a fun evening for the children.
