Swim Across America COPS Families -It seems like everything we are doing these days is moving towards a virtual format. Swim Across America this year for Dallas was scheduled for 9/26/20 to raise funds for cancer treatment and research for the Innovative Clinical Trials Center and Baylor’s Charles Sammons Cancer Center. Even though we are still considered to be in the pandemic, Swim Across America’s missions doesn’t stop. The COPS Care SAA team is registered and we have 12 participants that have raised 38% of our goal so far. We need more help!! Cancer touches so many adults and children, even our own COPS families. The COPS team is looking for swimmers to join the fight. Be sure to register and assign yourself to the COPS Cares team. SAA normally asks people to fundraise $200-$500 to participate in our Open Water swim. This year, they are just asking for a $25 registration fee to be a part of this virtual event. That’s it! $25 and you still fight cancer like you have in the past and you get the special COVID year t-shirt. As a point of clarification, tracking activity is not mandatory by any means. Look at it this way, your swimmer is practicing daily…that can be their participation. We just want you to be a part of the 2020 event in any capacity. So please register today: https://www.swimacrossamerica.org/site/TR/OpenWater/Dallas? pg=entry&fr_id=5506 SAA is planning a drive-thru t-shirt pick up some time late September or early October, so stay tuned for that announcement! Thank you again for being a loyal part of our participation in Swim Across America and its mission to fight cancer.
George Patterson Memorial Fund The George Patterson Memorial Fund is named for a man who epitomized parent involvement with the City of Plano Swimmers. George Patterson involved himself in any way possible in order to make COPS what it has become today. This involvement included being in charge of the timing system at countless meets, training other parents for timing, organizing parent golf tournaments, and many other activities. George attended board meetings, held meetings at his house, and always made it a point to introduce himself to families he did not know. As a swim dad, George encouraged his two children in the sport of swimming and always kept in touch with their coaches. He wanted his children to have a positive and successful experience with the sport of swimming and felt that COPS was the best place for this to happen. Not only did his children swim with COPS, his daughter after a stellar swim career at Austin College, served as a coach for COPS while also coaching at Plano East Senior High School. He had three sons, Robert, Chris and Graham. Graham swam for COPS as well.
Because of the love and pride George had for COPS, George’s family decided to request that family and friends donate funds for the George Patterson Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers. Over the years, funds donated in memory of George Patterson have paid for Olympian speakers, scholarships, and , and most recently the COPS Executive Committee has designated that funds donated in George Patterson’s name will be divided between the scholarship fund for needy swimmers and the Build A Pool Fund. All money raised goes helps honor the memory of a man who will always be a part of COPS.
North Texas Giving Day North TX Giving Day is September 17th – ALL DAY! It is the one day a year where local nonprofit organizations rally together to reach new donors and raise more money for their organization. This is COPS’ second year to participate. What’s new this year? This year NTxG is going to be one of two fundraisers that COPS is offering to its members to help you meet your fundraising goals for the year. We have ended our fiscal year much leaner than we wanted and due to the coronavirus, our poinsettia sale won’t be taking place in the fall because we can’t sell products. So NTxG is going to be our fall fundraiser. This means that money that you donate to COPS through NTxG will count towards your annual fundraising financial commitment ($200 individual, $300 family). What is COPS asking? COPS is trying to recoup our loss of revenue from our poinsettia sales. We are asking for each family in COPS to donate a minimum of $25. If this happens, then we will be at the same revenue that we were for poinsettias. Next Steps: beginning September 1st you can schedule your donation to be billed on the 17th. On September 17th, you can make a donation directly to our North Texas Giving Day page. LINK TO DONATE https://www.northtexasgivingday.org/cityofplanoswimmers
