SWANSTON LADIES’ NEWSLETTER – JULY 2021 Produced by Elizabeth Anderson – Ladies Captain Welcome to July’s newsletter. Can’t quite believe that is us half way through the year already and well into the summer. We have so far managed to play all our competitions and even managed a couple of fun ones as well, so lots of news to impart. Over the past few weeks we have had 70 plus ladies having golfing lessons, so good to see so many ladies interesting in taking up, or returning, to golf, a huge thank you to all who have come along in the evening and a Sunday to help. May and June Competitions There were 9 Stableford and Medal Competition over May and June with 1 win for Fiona and me, 2 wins for Susan, 4 for Zoe and 1 for Andrea. Summer Cup was won by Zoe. Putting competition won by Muriel The team of Andrea, Norma, Graham and myself won the Club Texas Scramble. Other competitions. Nan, Joan and I won the Tri-am at King James IV course in Perth. Andrea and I won Greensome and West Lothian Golf club. I am sure there have been other wins for Swanston ladies, but these are all I know of so far. July and August Competition. Stablefords – 3rd July, 18th July, 29th July, 19th August Medal – 10th July (CCQ2), 15th July 21st August Caerketton – 24th July Friendship Cup – 6th August (see below) Championship Week 9th – 14th August Bogey Trophy – 28th August 3-Club – 4th September. Coronation Foursomes – 1st August. Andrea and I will be representing Swanston in this competition at the Whitecraigs Golf Club.
Daily Mail Foursomes Andrea and Margaret did extremely well winning through to the 5th round in this national competition previously winning against teams from Mortonhall, Lanark and Harburn, unfortunately their winning run came to an end when they came up against Lochend ladies who are well used to playing at Swanston. Well done for all you achieved in this competition. Morrison Millar Teams of Muriel, Susan, Linda and Zoe represented Swanston playing 2 rounds on what was one of the hottest days so far this year in the Morison Millar competition at Baberton. Not winning but well up the score sheets. Well done to all. June 5th – Lady Captain’s Day 18 very colourful ladies came along to play Bingo, Bango, Bongo, a fun format which quite a few of the ladies had never played before but thoroughly enjoyed. It was a great day and lovely to have so many Templar ladies playing for the first time. Another 2 ladies joined us for drinks and cake served afterwards in the Brasserie. Friday 11th June 5pm – Putting competition On lovely balmy evening 16 ladies played in the Putting competition over the 2 putting greens. There were 9 straight putting holes but also 3 challenges. Putting with a ping pong ball on a windy evening, that’s a challenge. Putting sequentially in squares, missing one and you were out, and putting like a clock around a hole all really challenged the putters. Thought for once Muriel might have been pipped but she was overall winner again, the rosebowl is becoming a permanent fixture in her home. Drinks, snacks and chat afterwards finished the evening. Thursday 15th June Senior Cpt v Ladies Cpt for JS Trophy – Texas scramble played with the senior men, this was the first of 2 charity events that we play with the seniors. £270 was raised via donations and raffle for the local charity Vocal who were delighted to receive this amount from us. First time ever that the match resulted in a draw. I was delighted that my team won the team prize beating nearest team by .2 of a stroke. The return match playing for the Jimmy Mitchel trophy has been moved from August to Tuesday 12th October. Friendlies: 2 friendlies were played with a draw against Merchants and a win against Criagmillar. Lovely evenings, enjoyable company and lovely snacks, drinks and chat served after the game.
Hareburn This competition is well underway with Zoe, Muriel, Linda and Susan through to the semi- finals. 9-hole Challenge All the first games should now have been played. The next round will be sent out to all involved shortly. This is a fun match-play competition using half of your full playing handicap, as your handicap can go up or down please check before you start playing. You have also been sent out the stroke index for both front and back 9-holes. Card, Rakes and Flags As from Saturday 26th June, rakes were returned for use to the bunkers. Flags can be removed from the hole. From Saturday 3rd July we will return to the ‘normal’ way of marking cards. You will no longer mark your own card, but swap cards with a partner, 2 signatures, player and marker, will be required on the card before it is submitted for the competition. Friendship Cup – Friday 6th August This is a fun evening competition played in Greensome format over 12 holes and supper afterwards where you invite a guest to come and play. If you need a partner I have one for you. September 11th – Ladies Open A word document is attached with a poster for the open, please can you circulate to as many people as possible. Club Championships The Club Championship will run from Monday 9 th August, with Ladies quarterfinals on Monday and Semi Finals on Thursday with ALL finals on Saturday 13 th. If you are not in the final it would be good to come and support all the finalists. Locker Room Over the coming weeks going to have a clear out in the locker room as there are lot of old shoes and jackets which seem to have been there for a long time.
