Presidents Spiel Mutterings of Igor Kia ora koutou katoa The last month has brought ussome the autumn magic with sunny calm days andsmooth seas. This has seen a lot of boats out regularly and somegoodresults cominginto the club. At the end of April, we were still gettingmarlin andother gamefish. Thereseemsto be plenty of kahawai out there and the snapper fishingis productive. Thistime of year, a lot of people changeto more inshore fishingor pickup the trout rod for a bit of time onthe lakes. Thereare club competitionsover the nextfew monthscovering various species to suit the changein seasonso keep an eye out for them and join in the fun We have the 2021Kilwell trout tournament runningfrom 11th – 13th June. this isalways a fun weekend for all the competitors. A bigthanksto the team at Kilwell sports for their continued support and to Dean Tiriana and RossLucasfor organisingand running the comp. Recently Shirl and I did a road trip down the west coast andup throughOtago. Havingnot been there before we thought we would doa bit of reconnaissanceof the rivers and lakesfor future expeditions.Thefreshwater fishingopportunities are unbelievable with massivelakes and numerous rivers to choosefrom and all well stockwith Trout and salmon.I bit of local knowledgeis helpful to find accessto someof the areas but a couple of beers at the pubtalkingwith the locals seemed to be a fool proofway of gettinginformation and directions. Afantastic part of NZto visit for a bit of R&R. (and no tour buses! Yet) Enough from me Noho ora mai Play safe, Stay healthy, Keepsmiling! Igor
Species of the Month - Kahawai Kahawai are found in waters all around New Zealand but more commonly in coastal areas in schools. They take bait easily and feed on other fish above the seabed. Kahawai can live upto 26 years and can grow to 65cm in length. They vary from grey-blue to blue-green above and are silvery beneath with scattered dark grey spots on the back and flanks. Kahawai is best eaten smoked and it is best to bleed them as soon as they are killed as their flesh goes off quickly. Kahawai can often be mistaken for kingfish but their lack of yellow colour and small size is where their characteristics differ from the kingfish
