9 nights, 10 days | Summary Itinerary Highlights of Spain Tour September 10th to 19th, 2022 Saturday, September 10th Day 1 Depart Canada for Madrid Board your flight from select Maritime cities and depart on your overnight flight to Madrid. Try and get some sleep before your morning arrival in Madrid. Sunday, September 11th Day 2 Arrive Madrid Arrival to Madrid. Madrid has been Spain’s Capital since the 16th century and its main attractions include three internationally famous art galleries, grand public squares, and many museums filled with the treasures of Spain's history. In Madrid airport you will be met by your English-speaking tour guide and transfer to your hotel by local coach. Afternoon is free to explore the area. Welcome Dinner with drinks at the hotel. Monday, September 12th Day 3 Tour Madrid and Toledo Enjoy complimentary breakfast at the hotel. This morning we will have Madrid Panoramic and the Prado Museum Tour with a local guide. We depart from the hotel where you will be able to see historical and modern monuments and buildings of this important city during your drive. Your guide will tell you about different historical periods which are marked by the construction of the buildings. We will also visit the Prado Museum, Madrid's top cultural sight. This is one of the world's greatest art galleries with dazzling display of works by the great European masters such as Velázquez, Goya, Raphael, Rubens, and Bosch (among other major Italian and Flemish artists). After some free time for lunch, we depart to Toledo for a guided tour of the city. The city of Toledo has its origins in Toletum, the name the Romans gave to this settlement on the banks of the River Tagus after its conquest in 190 BC. The city maintained its importance for centuries and, in the Visigothic era, became the capital of Hispania (6th C.). The arrival of the Arabs in the 8th century, together with the presence of Christians and Jews, made Toledo the “city of the three cultures”. Tonight, enjoy dinner at the hotel or at a local restaurant. Overnight: Hotel: Santos Agumar 4* or similiar (B, D) Tuesday, September 13th Day 4 Madrid – Cordoba - Seville Enjoy complimentary breakfast at the hotel. This morning we check out and depart for Seville. We drive through La Mancha, the famous region in Spain where Don Quixote de la Mancha had his adventures and through the Andalucía countryside through the olive groves and vineyards for which Córdoba is very well known. Located on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, Córdoba is one of the oldest Spanish cities founded by the Romans in 152 B.C. After lunch, we will have a guided tour of Cordoba with a local guide. Our itinerary includes a walk in the Jewish quarter and the visit of the Cathedral - Mosque. It was started by Abderraman in 785. It is the biggest mosque in the Islamic world. In 1236 it was turned into Christian cathedral. After the visit board the bus for Seville, the Capital of Andalusia and the fourth largest Spanish city bathed by the Guadalquivir River. Wednesday, September 14th Day 5 Seville Enjoy complimentary breakfast at the hotel. This morning we will have a guided tour of Seville. Discover Seville including the surprisingly imposing Plaza de España, built in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. We continue with a visit to the Royal Alcazar which is the oldest residence of the Spanish Kings and dates back from the Almohade times and is the best example of Moorish style. There you will be able to see ceramic tile mosaics, crafted ceilings, courtyards and wonderful Arabic and renaissance style gardens. We’ll continue the visit discovering the old mysterious Santa Cruz Quarter and the Jewish Quarter, with its narrow little streets, squares full of orange trees and its flower-filled patios. Free time for lunch. Afternoon is at leisure. Dinner with wine at the hotel. Overnight: Hotel: Ayre Sevilla 4* or similiar (B, D) Thursday, September 15th Day 6 Seville – Granada Enjoy complimentary breakfast at the hotel. Today we depart for Granada. During the period of Muslim domination of Spain, Granada was the finest city on the peninsula. Today it is still home to the greatest Muslim legacy in Europe and one of the most inspiring attractions on the Continent, the Alhambra. We will have a guided tour of the Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens. During Moorish reign, this majestic fortress was the summer residence of the Arab Royalty. Experience the tranquility of the Generalife. Free time for lunch and the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner with wine at hotel. After dinner, transfer to the Flamenco Zambra show at Caves Los Tarantos (1 drink included). On the return the minibuses will drop us off in the Albaycin neighbourhood, an official UNESCO world heritage site. We will walk through oldest neighbourhood of Granada and enjoy a panoramic view of the Alhambra Palace illuminated. Overnight: Hotel: Maciá Real Alahambra 4* or similar (B, D) Friday, September 16th Day 7 Granada - Valencia Enjoy complimentary breakfast at the hotel. Depart for Valencia, Spain's third largest city and capital of the province of Valencia. This city is the home to paella, the famous rice dish, and the Holy Grail to name a few. On arrival, have free time for lunch before a walking tour of the old town of Valencia, where we will see La Lonja (The Silk Exchange), declared in 1996 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Just in front of it, the Mercado Central or Mercat Central is a public market and is generally considered one of the oldest European markets still running. The Estación del Norte (The North Station) is another good example of a modernist building which boasts a beautiful façade decorated with allegorical tiles. We will see the Cathedral, a combination of late Roman Gothic, Renaissance & Baroque style. Paella dinner with wine at the hotel tonight. Saturday, September 17th Day 8 Valencia - Barcelona Enjoy complimentary breakfast at the hotel. Today we depart for Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia an autonomous community of Spain. It is a Mediterranean and cosmopolitan city that incorporates Roman remains, Medieval quarters and the most beautiful examples of modernism and 20th century avant-garde architecture in its urban layout. Upon arrival we check in to the hotel. Free time for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure for strolling around. Return to the hotel on your own. At 8:00 pm, we’ll take a short walk to Restaurant Mussol for a “Catalan” dinner with drinks included. Overnight: Hotel: Catalonia Diagonal Centro Hotel 4*or similar (B, D) Sunday, September 18th Day 9 Barcelona Enjoy complimentary breakfast at the hotel. This morning we have a guided city tour of Barcelona. We’ll drive through Paseo de Gracia to see Gaudi's famous apartment buildings including Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Next we will see the famous church La Sagrada Familia (viewed from outside only), Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece. We then continue toward Plaza de Cataluña and the Old Town. We will see the exteriors of the Cathedral, a pure Spanish Gothic monument, the Gothic Quarter with its many interesting squares such as the Plaza St. Jaume with the Town Hall and Catalonian Parliament buildings and the famous La Ramblas street. The perfect place to do some souvenir shopping and see the costumed human statues along the street. We will go up to Montjuich mount where we will have a beautiful panoramic view of Barcelona. After the tour, we will have free time to explore Barcelona. Overnight: Hotel: Catalonia Diagonal Centro Hotel 4*or similar (B) Monday, September 19th Day 10 Fly Home Enjoy complimentary breakfast at the hotel. This morning we check out and transfer to the Barcelona Airport. Depart on our transatlantic flight for your Maritime City. Important Notes Activity Level Travelling with Target Tours requires a certain level of activity in order to enjoy and participate in our tours. This tour requires the following: • Walking or standing for short periods of time • Lifting and carrying your luggage for short distances • Manage your carry-on luggage through airports • Climbing multiple sets of stairs • Walking on uneven surfaces • Flights in excess of 5 hours and/or overnight • Free time but no free days during the tour • Busy sidewalks and crowded areas • Unable to accommodate walkers or collapsible wheelchairs. Canes are permitted. For all tours please remember that the Tour Director is there to assist all members of the group. While they are happy to provide a helping hand from time to time they are unable to provide mobility assistance for extended periods of time during a tour. Therefore, all travellers must be able to manage their mobility independently. Tour Director and Driver Your Tour Director and Driver play an important role in making your vacation as memorable and hassle-free as possible. While optional, gratuities are a great way to show your appreciation. The suggested industry guideline is 2 to 3 Euro per person, per day for your Spanish Tour Director and also your Driver. Gratuities for your Target Tours Tour Director is also options and only required for travel days to and from Spain. This should be extended on a voluntary and individual basis at the completion of the tour. Travel Protection Your tour price does not include travel protection. Proof of out-of-country medical insurance is required for this tour. If you are covered, we advise you to look into coverage details, if there is a deductible, if you need to pay up front, and where to call in case of emergency.
