Canberra Gang Show 2018 Gang Manual Welcome to the show! Congratulations on making the decision to join Canberra Gang Show 2018. We hope you have a fantastic theatrical experience, meet heaps of new friends and above all have great fun. INFORMATION FOR EVERYONE Gang Rules First and foremost, Gang Show is a Scouting and Guiding event. As such, the first rules to be followed are always the Scout and Guide Laws. Gang Show follows both the Scout & Guide Laws and Promises to maintain a happy, healthy and safe environment at Gang Show. You will be expected to show respect to yourself and others, as well any equipment and resources. Gang Show has a ‘hands off’ policy and those in relationships are asked to show restraint by leaving them at the door. Gang Show is an alcohol free activity This means that anyone under the influence of alcohol will be asked to leave the Gang Show activity, and the matter will then be dealt with at an appropriate time. Gang Show is a drug free activity All prescribed medication should be handed to the Welfare Team, along with instructions at the start of rehearsal. This information should already have been indicated on your application form. Please ensure the Welfare Team are aware of any changes to these requirements. If you are unwell please speak to the Welfare Team. Gang Show is a smoke free activity The Scout and Guide Associations regard smoking as a matter for individual decision, outside Scouting and Guiding activities. Gang Show will not provide smoking areas, nor allow smoking to occur at Gang Show events. Members who smoke outside of Scouting activities are encouraged not to do so in a means that would lead to passive smoking by any other person. Gang members in breach of these rules may be asked to leave the show. Please see the ACT Scout Alcohol, Tobacco, Drug and Other Substance Abuse Policy and the National Rover Responsible Alcohol Guidelines for more information. These can be found on the ACT Scout website. Please see the Girl Guides Australia policy on smoking, alcohol, drug and other substance abuse policy in Guidelines Edition 6.1 (section 8:16), available on the Girl Guides Australia website. Gang Show is a nut free zone Similar to most schools in the ACT, Gang Show is also a nut free zone due to any potential allergies. Gang Show members over the age of 16 must have a WWVP card ACT legislation introduced in 2013 requires that all members of Canberra Gang Show who are 16 years or older must hold a registered Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) card. For any WWVP related questions or assistance, email the Gang Show Welfare Team - welfare@canberragangshow.com.au
WHO’S WHO Branch Commissioner: Gang Show Mark Slattery was appointed as the Branch Commissioner for Gang Show in late 2016, and is looking forward to leading Canberra Gang Show through our 51st year and beyond. Mark can be contacted anytime at gangshow@scoutsact.com.au The Production Team These are the people who have been putting in many hours of hard work and effort since September last year to ensure that you all look great onstage. On the first page of your script you will notice your list of roles. The Production Team has worked hard to put together the script and cast you in the roles that will suit you best and have you getting the most out of the show experience. Although the team is broken down into various levels below, it’s important to remember that it is a team effort and that all the members on the team are equally important and dedicated. Production Team Beth Feint & Thomas ‘Dac’ Lee (Co-Directors) Aaron Robilliard Amy Donoghue Bridget Brinsmead Caz Feint Steph McConnell Production Assistants Bron Lovejoy Kylie Kiu Lachlan Court Maddie Woodward Marli Haddeill Sam Philipse Shay McClymont Theatrical Skills Team Tim Adams (Acting Coach) Laura Unger (Dance Coach) Aaron Robilliard (Vocal Coach) Caz Feint (Vocal Coach) Support Teams The Welfare Team will be at every Gang event to ensure the health, safety and happiness for the entire Gang is being looked after. The Wardrobe Team will work with cast members throughout the show to fit your costumes and assist with any advice on items you may need to provide yourself for the show. Other important teams that support the show and who the cast will meet later on down the track include the Technical Team (Sound, Lighting, Set Design and Construction, Stage Crew), Marketing, Front of House, Props, Makeup, Band and Security.
PATROLS Your Patrol is the most important group of people you will be involved with during Gang Show. They are there to provide you with support, encouragement and a group of friends to share your Gang Show experience with. You will be told who your Patrol Leader is at the first rehearsal – they are someone you can talk to at any time for any reason. You need to let your Patrol Leader and the Welfare Team know if you are unable to attend any rehearsal or event. You will spend time with your Patrol each week and from time to time your Patrol will be asked to perform Patrol Duty (including flag duty and reflection at parade, and cleaning the halls at the end of rehearsals). Throughout the rehearsal and theatre season there is also a Patrol Challenge. Points can be awarded for just about anything: outstanding effort by a patrol member, cleaning up after rehearsal, patrol activities etc. You will be told more about the Patrol Challenge at rehearsal. HEALTH & HYGIENE As Gang Show is all about fun and development, the last thing we want is for Gang Members to get sick. If you can follow these simple steps, then we are all more likely to have a happy and healthy time while at Gang Show. Please make sure you are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions. Please make sure that you shower before rehearsal and apply deodorant (before AND during rehearsals). We all work up a bit of a sweat practicing those dances Make sure you eat healthy foods and get plenty of rest. This is particularly important around the in-theatre times, as this is where Gang Members tend to get sick from wearing themselves out and these illnesses can pass very quickly through the Gang. If you need to bring medication to Gang Show at any time, please notify the Welfare Team so they know you have it and can then store it for you if you need. They can also help remind you to take it! There will always be a member of the Welfare Team who is trained in First Aid to help with any accidents that occur while at rehearsal. WHO DO I RING IF I HAVE A PROBLEM? We like to make sure everyone in Gang Show is happy, so our lines of communication are always open for problems, questions and concerns. Your first point of contact should always be your Patrol Leader. You will receive their details at your first rehearsal when you find out who your PL is. All questions and concerns can be directed to the Welfare Team email address which is welfare@canberragangshow.com.au. You can call the Welfare Team at any time leading up to rehearsals on 1300 354 451 and this number will automatically get directed to a member of the Welfare Team. Any general enquiries about the show can be emailed to enquiries@canberragangshow.com.au.
CAST SPECIFIC INFORMATION Arriving at Rehearsal We expect everyone to arrive at rehearsals on time (10 minutes early is great). There’s nothing worse than when we’re all standing at opening parade and a stream of late comers are sneaking in the door. If we start each rehearsal on time, it means we will also finish each rehearsal on time. If you have to leave the rehearsals early for any reason you must see a member of the Welfare Team and let them know you’re leaving and when you expect to return. Similarly, if you arrive late, please ensure you check in with the Welfare Team before you join the rehearsal. Cars and Parking There is an area for parents to park when they drop you off and come to pick you up, although it can be limited. Please try and carpool where possible. Your Patrol Leader and the Welfare Team are available to help connect you with others who live near you so that you can make your own arrangements to carpool. Attendance Attendance at all rehearsals is compulsory. If you are going to be late or away, it is very important for you to notify the Welfare Team. It makes it very hard to rehearse the show without cast members present for their items, so please try your hardest to be at every rehearsal. Any absences for the rehearsals, dress rehearsals or performances must be communicated directly to your Patrol Leader and the Welfare Team via welfare@canberragangshow.com.au or on 1300 354 451. Be warned: your parts in the show may be at stake if you miss too many rehearsals. What to Bring At your first rehearsal, you will be given your script and casting list. Please bring your script to every rehearsal. It has the entire show in it which you will need for your rehearsals. As well as your script, make sure you have a full water bottle, some healthy snacks (no nuts) and when the weather gets colder, a few layers of clothes that you can put on and take off during rehearsal as you get hotter and colder. You are also encouraged to bring roll-on deodorant to all rehearsals, as you will work up quite a sweat during those dance items! What to Wear Gang members will be moving around quite a bit as well as being both indoors and outdoors at rehearsals. Remember what you wear needs to be appropriate and comfortable. As with all scouting and guiding activities, enclosed shoes are a must (something soft soled that is comfortable and supportive, like sneakers or running shoes). Clothing choices need to be weather appropriate – this means shoulders covered on sunny days and layers on those colder days. Food Please ensure that you eat before attending rehearsals and bring along some healthy snacks and your water bottle each week. On full day rehearsals, please remember to bring a packed lunch or you can purchase lunch from the Charnwood shops. There is to be NO energy drinks, nuts or chewing gum while at Gang Show. We know that rehearsals can be very tiring and draining, but the best way to combat that is to get plenty of sleep, be well hydrated and eat healthily.
Electronic Devices and other distractions To avoid distracting others during rehearsals, all mobile phones should be switched off or on silent at the start of rehearsals and remain off during any rehearsal period. For the safety of your property all other electronic devices such as iPods, portable games or tablet computers etc. should be left at home. The Welfare Team does not have enough space to keep everyone's valuables locked and secure during rehearsals, so you are responsible for your own belongings. You won't have much time to spend on them anyway and who wants to be anti-social while at rehearsals? IN THEATRE Tickets Here’s the thing – we’re putting on a show. For a show to be a success you need an audience to see the show. Start thinking about who you could sell tickets to by making a list of all the people you can ask to come and see this year’s fabulous show and most importantly, come and see YOU perform! The more people who are in the audience to see you perform, the more enjoyable the performances will be! Costumes In the show you may be asked to wear a costume that is appropriate to a particular scene. Wardrobe will assist with the adjustments to ensure that you are comfortable in what you wear on stage. If you are not comfortable in a costume please let the Wardrobe Team know your concerns so adjustments can be made. Uniform You will be required to wear FULL uniform during the finale of each performance. The definition of FULL uniform is as follows: For Scouts - including Leaders Scout shirt, black pants, scout belt or black belt, black polished leather shoes and Gang Show scarf with Gang Show woggle. For Guides 10 – 14 years old: Navy pants, uniform shirt, sash, Gang Show scarf with Gang Show woggle, black polished leather shoes 14 years and over: Navy pants, uniform shirt (preferably ¾ blouse), Gang Show scarf with Gang Show woggle, black polished leather shoes 18 years and over: Navy pants, uniform shirt (preferably white blouse), Gang Show scarf with Gang Show woggle, black polished leather shoes Opening Night Traditions After rehearsing and preparing for almost three months, Opening Night is a very special night. We’ve all worked so hard for hours and hours and we’ve made stacks of new friends. So what could be better than giving your friends “good luck” presents (affectionately known as ‘break-a-legs’)? Some people give flowers, some give lollies, some give out cards. Whatever it is, it’s a fantastic feeling to say thanks to a friend for sharing some good times together.
