WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ANIMAL QUALITY AND WELFARE The food industry is subject to intense public scrutiny worldwide. The bobby calf sector of the meat industry is unique in that the animals involved are very young. To adequately cater for their welfare requires the full co-operation of all those involved. As a marketer of bobby veal, Silver Fern Farms must provide assurances that its products are derived only from healthy animals, handled to meet animal welfare criteria. We all need to be familiar with animal welfare standards as set out in the Animal Welfare Act 1999, Code of Welfare for Dairy Cattle, Transport Code of Welfare (re: selection of calves for transport) and Animal Welfare (Calves) Regulations 2016.* ANIMAL REMEDIES AND ANTIBIOTICS Calves treated with animal remedies or antibiotics must be withheld, as per withholding periods outlined on the medication. Calves fed milk from cows treated with animal remedies or antibiotics must also be withheld. MPI tests animals randomly as they are processed. Presenting a calf for slaughter containing residues of antimicrobial substances is an offence with penalties up to $20,000 for an individual and $100,000 for a company. Theileria* is a blood-borne parasite that is transmitted by ticks. The main methods of controlling Theileria are to regularly check all classes of stock for ticks targeting tail head, base of udder and inside of legs; application of tick control remedies advised by your veterinarian; and quarantining all new stock coming onto the farm. The drug buparvaquone (BPQ) has been used overseas with some success and is available in New Zealand through private veterinarians. There are two products available containing BPQ – Butalex and Bupaject. As a mechanism to control residue levels of BPQ, calves born to any cow treated within 9 months of any cow’s treatment, or fed milk from cows treated with Butalex or Bupaject which contain BPQ within the 18 month withholding period MUST NOT be sent for slaughter. *Further information see Biosecurity and Animal Welfare sections at: www.mpi.govt.nz and www.dairynz.co.nz
