2017 Season Recap While one driver emerged to claim the championship with authority, the name of the game in the 2017 Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires was passing. With over 2,000 on-track passes completed through the season, the vision of taking a production-based Mazda MX-5 Cup car to the track produced incredible parity of competition, close on-track battles all through the field, and a TOTAL margin of victory of under five seconds—for a 10-race season! A race schedule that saw the series race as part of four Verizon IndyCar event weekends as part of the move to INDYCAR sanctioning in 2017 included both new and fabled venues for the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup field of racers to experience. The remarkable amount of passing and close competition was also underscored by the fact that some nine different drivers emerged with the Battery Tender Hard Charger Award, which provides $1,000 to the driver as well as $1,000 to the crew chief of the car that makes up the most positions in each race. The $200,000 champions prize went to Patrick Gallagher, who announced his intentions straight away by winning the first two races of the season at Barber Motorsports Park, with 2016 Rookie of the Year Mark Drennan following him to the line in both races. The Rookie of the Year honors, and the $50,000 scholarship from Mazda to go with it, went to Robert Stout, who impressed with a two-win season and marked himself as a name to watch in 2018. The second event of the season saw the series make its debut across the hallowed Yard of Bricks with a double-header weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A midwest summer event yielded big rains and incredible race conditions as the field charged through a wet but drying track on their rain-spec BFGoodrich Tires. Nearly 500 passes for position, just one caution period, and all of .06 seconds separating the winner in the first race and just over 2 seconds in the second demonstrated the deep bench of skill in the field. Stout won race two and celebrated with some Brick-kissing of his own! Road America was anticipated to be a drafting battle, and with hundreds of on track passes made, it didn’t disappoint. Gallagher was as surprised as anyone to emerge with the win in the first race after entering the final corner in third place, while 2016 series champion Nathanial Sparks showed his mettle to take the win in race two. Another series first in conjunction with IndyCar was in play with a visit to the Toronto street circuit that produced another tight field, with Robert Stout bolstering his run for the Rookie of the Year award with a trip to victory lane as Gallagher claimed race two. In a field that well demonstrates the established age vs experience conundrum, it was experience that emerged to take the win at Watkins Glen as long- time MX-5 racer Todd Lamb broke through for victory on the classic upstate New York circuit in race two after Gallagher claimed race one. The season-finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca saw Gallagher put his stamp on the 2017 Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires season as the champion scored his eighth victory to close out the year in style. 12
