The dynamics are local – the passion worldwide. BMW Plant Leipzig. BMW Plant Leipzig Sheer Driving Pleasure
BMW Plant Leipzig: flexible production. The Central Building at BMW Plant Leipzig has won numerous awards, including the German Architectural Prize 2005.
After less than three years of construction work, BMW Plant Leipzig went on stream in March 2005. BMW Plant Leipzig is one of the most modern automobile production facilities worldwide. Its progressive architecture houses the sophisticated and highly flexible production processes that create automobiles of the BMW 1 and 3 Series. The heart of the plant is the Central Building, where staff and visitors come and go. As well as being home to the plant‘s administration, quality management and communications, the Central Building is the hub to all production areas. Designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, it is unique in the way it combines modern forms and functionality. Open plan offices and short communication routes enable swift information exchange, while overhead a steady flow of auto bodies glides through the hall, bringing office workers closer to automotive production. Customised manufacturing: turning dreams into reality. It takes several thousand components and many hundreds of production stages to create an individual BMW automobile.
The body shop: starting with steel. The car first begins to take shape in the body shop. Here, some 800 robots gradually assemble hundreds of individual sheet metal components to form a high precision car body. The individual parts are joined together into a stable body by over 5,500 spot welds, depending on the model. As the car goes through production, spot welds are quality checked and the precision of body dimensions is verified. Together, these elements are fundamental to the driving dynamics of every BMW automobile. Once completed, such a steel shell weighs around 350 kilograms. It is now ready to move to the next stage of production: the paint shop. The body shop – key facts. Paint shop: for a dazzling performance. As the car body passes through the paint shop, it is given its colour and shine. But paintwork also serves a range of other purposes, protecting the car from stone chips, corrosion and other environmental factors. After thorough cleansing and pre-treatment, the body is given four coats of paint. Water-based paints and a solvent-free, powder-based clear coat with minimal waste help minimise the environmental impact of paint shop activities at Plant Leipzig. Depending on the specific model, between eight and nine kilograms of paint cover the car body, forming a layer as thin as a human hair. The paint shop – key facts. Assembly: one of a kind. On average, one customised BMW leaves the production halls of Plant Leipzig every 80 seconds. From the interior details to the engine, from the transmission to the axles and wheels – it takes more than 240 individual production stages to customise each car to suit the client‘s preferences. The wide range of possible options makes it highly unlikely that two completely identical cars will ever leave Plant Leipzig. One special feature of Plant Leipzig‘s assembly area is its structure. Five “fingers” extend outwards, providing the shortest possible route for component supplies from outside to reach the assembly line. Assembly – key facts. Great expectations: of ourselves and others. Creating a premium product requires a quality culture that operates across the board – both in the plant and with external suppliers.
Premium quality: custom-made through and through. Plant Leipzig and the BMW Group work with a single aim in mind: to provide outstanding quality our customers will love. Our successful quality culture depends largely on our team, and our production specialists build each car with the greatest care and with its future owner in mind. Throughout the production process every car is checked numerous times before the final quality and function tests take place. We also perform rigorous spot-checks on quality, putting a sample of cars ready for dispatch to the acid test every day. Quality – key facts. Logistics: the right place at the right time. For production to take place, all the necessary components must be in the right place at the right time. Here at Plant Leipzig, logistics specialists coordinate the complex network between customer wishes and supplier management to keep production running smoothly. Our skilfully engineered processes mean customers can change their orders up to six days before their car is due for assembly. Larger modules, such as the cockpit, seats and powertrain, are pre-assembled on-site in a supply centre, ready for just-in-time and just-in-sequence delivery to the production line. This reduces transport volumes coming into the plant by about one-third. Logistics – key facts. Just-in-sequence delivery: Parts supply: more than 80 percent of parts volume. highly automated, driverless transport systems and electric overhead conveyors.
Responsibility: in the plant and in the region. Like the rest of the BMW Group, BMW Plant Leipzig follows a principle of sustainability, acting with foresight and honouring its economic, ecological and social commitments. The plant can be extended and adjusted in various directions and makes sparing and careful use of valuable resources such as water, energy and materials. BMW Plant Leipzig attaches great importance to its long-term responsibilities as an employer and neighbour in the region. We have a strong involvement in local culture and in regional development, and our practical and vocational training programmes address the interests of young people making career choices.
