Kia ora koutou te whānau ō Burnham, Firstly I would like to congratulate our Kapa haka group, the tutors and all the staff and parents who made our Cultural Festival Performance so wonderful. Our tamariki performed with pride and passion and were a credit to Burnham School. Here are some comments I have had emailed to me regarding their performance: Just want to say what an amazing performance by your school at Cultural Festival. I was proud, not only with the kids performance but the mahi Latoya and Biancha did too. Your children seem to excel and rise up to another level when it comes to Maori performing arts, which was such a pleasure to Achievement - Angitu watch. Congratulations and we look forward to providing rakau training Term 4. Steve Hira wow….amazing - yes you should all be very proud indeed! Christine Brown Resource Teacher of Maori Our Year 7 and 8 students have been competing at the Koru Games this week. A huge thanks to the NZDF for providing a van for the duration of this event, and even a driver on Tuesday, and to Erica for driving the van for us on Wednesday and Thursday. This was greatly appreciated, especially as Erica did not have any of her own children participating in this event. Thanks also to the team of other parents who kindly provided transport and some of whom stayed at the event managing teams. We still have approximately 17 tickets left to attend Lucy Hone Resilience and Well-being. These tickets are free. I have heard Lucy speak on a number of occasions and she is worth coming along and listening to. If we have any left over tickets at school at 3.30pm on Monday then they will be given to other schools who have already given away their quota. Book Week has been fun-filled with students coming along to Bedtime Stories on Tuesday night. It was well attended, especially by our junior students. Remember to come along and look at the decorated classroom door competition, and to come along and watch the Story Book Parade on Friday. This is when our children and staff dress up as a story book character. Thursday night will be busy in many house across our community preparing for this event. Kind regards, Sandra PB4L - Positive Behaviour For Learning Congratulations to the following students who have earnt Values Wristbands: Room 6 - Responsibility - Kobe Room 4 - Respect - Floyd The children who had their Values Tickets drawn from the box at assembly are Ayla (Room 3) and Jared (Ruma Teina) and Grace (Ruma Tuakana). They have won themselves a hot chocolate. We had winners of the Learning Journal competition who were: Niamh and Isaiah from Room 6 and Devan, Monica and Alyssa D from Room 7. We’re focusing on the expected behaviours to be seen when we’re using our school library over the next couple of weeks and you might hear of your child making a photo collage about this so as to enter our pizza lunch competition. Ranginui and Papatūānuku Ranginui is the guardian of the sky and Papatūānuku is the guardian of the ground. There is a story of them separating, it is called I te tīmatanga. I can tell you some , but it will be in Māori. I te tīmatanga Koia rāua ko Ranginui te matua Ko Papatūānuku te whaea. There were six brothers born over night. Their names were Tū, Tāne, Tāwhirimatea, Tangarou, Haumia and Rongomatāne. The boys were annoyed sitting in the darkness. Tū said “lets kill our parents.” Tāwhiri said “no lets not kill our parents.” Haumia said “I want to stay and sit like this.” Rongo agreed. Tāne said “How about let’s separate them. Tane laid on his back and stretched his legs up. His father flew up in the sky and light was finally here. Tāne gave his father and mother something. He gave his mother flowers, trees and more. He gave his father the moon, stars and more. Everyone could do their jobs again. Whenever it rains it is tears from Ranginui crying for his love.
