GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY – Today is traditionally called “Good Shepherd Sunday” because the gospel tells us about our Lord Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd who never leaves his flock untended. It is also designated as World Day of Prayer for Vocations. I urge you each day to say a prayer for more Priests, Brothers and Sisters to serve God and His people. Over the course of our parish history, we have been blessed with many vocations to the priesthood and Religious life from St. Andrew's. However, a parish of our size should have many young men in the seminary and many young women in the convent. Our prayers, good advice and example can help many others to answer to Lord’s call to service in the Church. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! – Today we wish all of our mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day. May the Lord bless each of them for their generous vocation. Our Mothers’ Day Novena begins tomorrow. If you would like to enroll your mother, sister, Godmother, etc. (living or deceased) in the Novena of Masses, please stop by the little store in the back of the church or the parish office today for the enrollment envelope. Today is the last day to enroll. OPEN ENROLLMENT – This is also the time of year in which our Parish School holds open enrollment for new students. St. Andrew School provides the finest Catholic education in our community. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please stop by the school office as soon as possible as spaces are very limited. FIRST COMMUNIONS – Yesterday the 2nd graders from our Parish School received their First Holy Communion. On May 21st the children from our Religious Education Program will celebrate their First Holy Communion at 10:00 a.m. Everyone is invited to join in this celebration. St. Monica Academy will celebrate their First Communion next Saturday. Congratulations to all of them! CARDINAL MC INTYRE FUND FOR CHARITY – Next weekend, throughout the Archdiocese, a special collection is taken up for this charitable fund. This charity is unique to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It was established many years ago by the late Cardinal James Francis McIntyre to assist parishes in meeting the emergency needs of parishioners. The funds from this charity assist in emergency shelter, medicine, utilities, rent, etc. Each parish is allotted $5,000 per year for a variety of emergency charitable needs. Our parish uses these funds regularly to assist in emergencies. Thank you for your generosity to this fund. MONTH OF MARY – The month of May is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this month we will have the traditional “Crowning of Mary” by our School and Religious Education children. The May Crowning by the school will take place on May 13th, Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, at 10:30 a.m. followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The May Crowning by the children of our Religious Education Program will take place on Saturday, May 14th at 1:30 p.m. All are invited to either or both! I encourage you this coming month specially to pray the Rosary which is the most wonderful of Marian devotions. In Christ and St. Andrew, Father Gonzalez

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Fourth Sunday of Easter May 8, 2022 INTROIT Misericordia Domini plena est terra, alleluia: verbo Dei cæli firmati sunt, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. Exsultate iusti in Domino: rectos decet collaudatio. With the mercy of the Lord is the earth filled, alleluia: the word of God made the heavens, alleluia, alleluia. Psalm verse: Exult, ye just, in the Lord: praise from the upright is fitting. The image of the Good Shepherd stands out prominently in today’s readings, particularly the Gospel. The entrance hymn today speaks to this, and reminds us the comfort of our faith: “In heavenly love abiding, No change my heart shall fear; And safe is such confiding, For nothing changes here: The storm may roar without me, My heart may low be laid; But God is round about me; How can I be dismayed?” Indeed how can we be dismayed, if we have faith? The extended stress of the last three years can seem intolerable; but there is one knows our sorrow and has walked with us. He is with us now, to welcome us to the holy Sacrifice of the Mass every week. It is, then, in faith—and with hope born of the experience of salvation—that we can pray the last verse of our entrance hymn: “Green pastures are before me which yet I have not seen; Bright skies will soon be o’er me, Where darkest clouds have been. My hope I cannot measure, The path to life is free; My Savior has my treasure, And he will walk with me.” We now return to the study of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the guide that Holy Mother Church gives us for the celebration of the Holy Mass (www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/ general-instruction-of-the-roman-missal/). We mentioned last week how it is the rule which governs the work of we who prepare the celebration of the Mass. Those of us who make up the liturgical synaxis—the assembly of the faithful and the priest- celebrant—find guidance of our attitude and actions at worship guided by this document. Certainly, music selections are made according to its principles. GIRM reminds us that the celebration of Mass is “the center of the whole of Christian life for the Church both universal and local, as well as for each of the faithful individually. For in it is found the high point both of the action by which God sanctifies the world in Christ and of the worship that the human race offers to the Father, adoring him through Christ, the Son of God, in the Holy Spirit,” so that the entirety of Christian life is “bound up with it, flow from it, and are ordered to it.” Since this is a column about music, we will keep our focus primarily on that. In the next few weeks, we will return to the examination of the portions of General Instruction that deal with music in the Mass. A blessed Good Shepherd Sunday to all readers.

Ps. Exsultate iusti in Domino: rectos decet collaudatio.
