FLINDERS FACTS Zonta Club of Adelaide Flinders Inc 2020 – 2022 BIENNIUM District 23, Area 2, Issue 12 Club 993 Chartered December 1981 July August 2021 From the President 2020 -2021 Hello everyone, I hope you are all keeping warm and safe as we move from the experience of another lockdown in what has been a particularly cold and wet July. Even though we did go into lockdown just prior to our last dinner meeting it was wonderful to see how we could still rise to the occasion and not give up. While it was a shame not to be able to get together over dinner it was great to be able to meet. Our experience of last year came to the fore. Thank you to everyone who was able to join the Zoom meeting. In this edition of the newsletter there are many notices of events which I would like all of you to give some consideration to attending, if you are able please. District Conference is around the corner I know there are a number of members who are looking forward to this event. We will be discussing the ‘Call to Conference’ papers at our meeting on the 18th July and as your delegate I would really appreciate everyone’s input into the discussion. The movie fundraiser is just around the corner – 21st July; this event has around a 38 year tradition of being a great fundraiser as well a great way for members to get together and work together for our common purpose. A special thanks to Jill Welsh for the work she continues to put into ensuring we have a great film to see and a great event to enjoy. Have a look at the list later in the newsletter of movies we have seen over the years. Thank you to our Archivist Carolyn Colquhoun for putting the list together. The tickets for the movies on the 21st August are ready to be sold please help where you can. The Area 2 Advocacy Workshop is also being held on the 21st July. It would be wonderful to see many members there especially those who have put their name down to be a member of club the Advocacy team. I think it will help us to galvanize our thinking about our clubs future Advocacy direction. Come to both if you can they are close to one another in time and distance. I would like to acknowledge the great work that Lindy Berketa put into the preparations for the Sausage Sizzle. As we all know the first important step to any such activity is excellent preparation and maintaining a finger on the pulse and this was evident on the day. All those who could assist seemed to have a good time together working as well as catching up. My thanks go also to the members, partners and friends who assisted, everyone’s contribution helped to make it a great success. Lindy has announced another sausage sizzle coming up in September. See the photos later in the newsletter. My greatest hope, as I am sure it is with everyone regarding all of these activities, is that in this time of COVID-19 they are all able to go ahead. I have Before I sign off I wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate one of our newer members Kathie Guy on becoming a grandmother for the first time. May you have many wonderful experiences together with your grandson over the coming years. Best wishes to all. I look forward to seeing you again face to face at the next meeting. Lesley Siegloff PhD Rugs for Love- This month ZCAF had a very special donation from the “Rugs for Love” group. Pauline Glover the coordinator of the group acknowledged the work of our members who have made a contribution to the making of the special rugs for a number of years now. She wrote in lovely letter which read: Please accept a donation of $300.00 from the Rugs with Love group. We were able to complete 230 rugs in the 2020 - 2021year. We had a very successful exhibition in a church this year! Your member Carolyn Colquhoun is in the Rugs with Love group and while she was unable to attend the exhibition, she was there with us in spirit. We are delighted that this year we have been able to make donations to 3 Zonta clubs, a VIEW club and Days for Girls. Last year COVID derailed the exhibition and therefore our capacity to make donations. All rugs have been distributed to the Department of Child Protection houses (north, south, central), Women's Safety Services (north and south), Aboriginal Elders Village at Davoren Park, Zonta Club of Noarlunga Southern Vales (baby rugs for their project with Christies Beach High School and Coolok House), an Aboriginal family (who live near Pauline Glover) and a Liberian family whose husband was killed in the recent tyre accident (mother left with 6 children). This project is self-funded by the generous donations we receive of wool and fabrics and the good will of women, who love to knit, crochet, sew and get together once a month to create the masterpieces that are in the picture. (Unfortunately I could not reproduce the picture here. Ed) We know that you will put the money to good use and so it is our pleasure to be able to share! Pauline Glover, Coordinator Rugs for Love project. A special thank you to our members who participate d and made this donation possible Carolyn Colquhoun and Sue Lear, and our past member Pauline Glover who coordinates this special project. 1 Zonta Club Adelaide Flinders July/August 2021
August 21st Please consider joining with the other Area 2 Clubs at this very stimulating opportunity to discuss the issues confronting people in our community. Use the trybooking site to register so that the organisers can make appropriate decisions about numbers in line with the Covid 19 requirement. There is no cost however a gold coin donation would be acceptable. By coincidence our own club movie fundraiser is a being run that day. It commences after the Advocacy afternoon the venues are not far apart and there will be some refreshments prior to the movie. Remember to put this great celebration date into your calendars. This celebration will be with us before you know it. The committee is coming up with what looks to be a great program Further information about costs and bookings will be available soon. 2 Zonta Club Adelaide Flinders July/August 2021

July Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser – Lindy Berketa "We were lucky enough to sneak in another Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Edwardstown on Sunday 18th July, just before the latest lockdown! What a great way to spend a cold and windy day, chatting with fellow members (at a distance, of course) and raising much needed funds for our wonderful Service projects. It was also encouraging to see many of our new members and friends getting involved. A warm vote of thanks to all members and their tireless family members and friends for continuing to support us. To those who assisted on the day, Bernadette Egan, Kae Martin, Sharon Vale, Susan MacDonald, Eronwy Edwards, John Berketa, Kathie Guy, Margaret and Peter Rowland, Isobel and Jeff McFarlane, Lesley and Hans Siegloff thank you. The future- get your aprons ready - we have another sizzle booked for the 26th September - when hopefully it will be much warmer!" Thank you Lindy What a great team, Thank you all – from Lesley 5 Zonta Club Adelaide Flinders July/August 2021
