SG MESSENGER: 30 April 2021, No. 26 www.springgroveschool.co.uk FIXTURES ARE BACK! A year since we hosted our last fixtures at SG, we were delighted this week to welcome Kent College for the first fixture of 2021! The girls’ U11 A and B teams played cricket against Kent College and we have two lovely match reports from Olivia and Liberty—thank you! It is with great pleasure that I am writing a match report for the first match since lockdown. On Wednesday 28th April 2021, the girls from Years 5-6 (including Tamsin in Year 4) played cricket matches against Kent College. Mrs Brogan-Jones’ team was led by Pia, who won the toss and chose to field first (this was a suggestion by Mrs Langford). I bowled first, starting the innings with a good couple of balls, Isabelle (D) then followed with a good over. Isla then bowled along with Sophia, and the rest of the team followed in their pairs, Isobel (J) took a wicket on the last ball of her over and Isabelle followed with a catch on one of their balls. Kent College ended up with a total of 242 with us still left to bat. Isobel and Pia started us off well with a score of 210 the end of their innings, Isla and Sophia made a near get-away, nearly being caught out by Kent College, they soon after got run out with a sneaky -3 because they had run twice, then we all made a good commitment to getting a final score of.... 242, making it a draw. Kent College’s player of the match was Pia, and Isobel then received a well-deserved Player of the Match by Mrs Brogan-Jones. Kent College got a snack of a Kit Kat and a bottle of water. Well done to all the people who played in the match. Olivia D-M On the chilly, cloudy day of Wednesday 28th April 2021 the SG under 11B team played a cricket match against Kent College at home. We lost the toss, and the game began. Batting first, the SG team patiently waited by the half tree whilst, two by two, we went out for our turn to bat. As we huddled by the tree we gained lots of runs, but not all because of actually running! After we had finished batting, Mrs Langford gave us a quick pep talk before we went out to start our fielding. We gave some brilliant bowls and had some great bats from Kent College. Isabella PK and May C both bowled somebody out!! By the end of the match the scores were… Drum roll please…. 276 to SG / 252 to Kent College. Players of the Match were Aeva P for her excellent batting and fielding and May C for bowling a maiden over. Thank you to Mrs Langford for hosting the match and to the kitchen for supplying a tasty match tea. Liberty W

GOSLINGS IN GIRAFFES Giraffes had a visit from some Goslings this week. Theodore was very excited to bring in his five goslings to show the children. They asked Theodore's daddy lots of questions and we found out what they eat, how long they take to grow and what a boy goose and girl goose are called. Thank you to Mr Young for bringing them in to show us.
CLUBS Clubs started again this week and we’ve got some lovely pictures from Art Club, Gardening Club, Lego Club and Walking Club—thank you Mrs Desmet, Mrs Cracknell, Mrs Jaggard and Mme Leavey for the lovely pictures. Art Club: This week our art was inspired by the wisteria that’s beginning to come out on the front of school. Gardening Club: In our first week of gardening club KS1 have planted giant sunflowers and wild strawberry plants kindly donated by Mrs Waring. We’ve also had lots of lovely pot donations from Mrs Clarke and Mrs Jaggard. We cannot wait to get planting. Lego Club: In the Head’s study—a relaxing and absorbing way to end the week! Walking Club: For the first outing of walking club we walked to Perry court, said hello to the donkeys and came back.
YEAR 3 VIOLINS This term in Prep 3, we are having an introduction to playing the violin. We looked at how the violin makes sound, and investigated the different parts of the instrument. We started with plucking the strings, but everyone was very keen to use the bow as soon as possible (more noisy!). We are following the Colourstrings approach, and employed a few ball-pit balls in the correct colours to help us. Here we are playing a game where we had to play the right string depending on which coloured ball was thrown! This helped us all play together and helped us learn how to play on the bounce..I mean, beat! We're looking forward to playing some recognisable tunes when we get a bit more experienced. Mrs Britton
LIONAID ASSEMBLY Did you know? Lions symbolize power but they are now one of the most endangered animals on Earth. The numbers are rapidly declining . Their population has gone down by 30-40% in the last 30 years. There are now only about 20,000 lions in the world. In 2015, Scientists said they are very endangered and may become extinct by 2050. We found out all these facts in Prep 3’s LionAid Assembly on Friday, which featured a brilliant Powerpoint presentation created by Aarav S. Aarav has also raised £400 for LionAid. Well done to Aarav and to all of Prep 3 for a fantastic Assembly and lovely singing of ‘In the Jungle’ from the ‘Lion King’. OUTDOOR LEARNING Lovely weather for our Outdoor Learning this week—thank you to Miss Osborn for leading our Forest School session on Friday with Year 2.
