Junior Certificate Compulsory subjects • Irish (unless you have an Irish exemption) • English • Maths • Science • History • Religion (not an exam subject – 1 class a week) • CSPE (Civic Social and Political Education – not an exam subject – 1 class a week)
Junior Certificate • Short Courses – These subjects are taught for 2 classes a week and are certified in the Junior Certificate • Computer Studies • SPHE • PE • Polish (Optional for some as an extra short course) – offered opposite Religion and CSPE
Optional Subjects • Our aim is to be an inclusive school that helps all our children reach their potential. • We offer a wide variety of subjects – subjects that will suit your child. • We believe that offering a large choice of subjects will enable each child to reach their potential.
• Geography • French • Spanish • Business Studies Optional • Art Subjects • Woodwork • Technical Graphics • Metalwork • Home Economics • Music
Choosing Subjects • We need you to help us to set everything up for next year by choosing now the subjects your child thinks they would like to study for the Junior Cycle. • We will use your choices to set up the timetable. • Each student will be able to change subjects when they come in if they wish anytime right up until the October mid term. • This will mean students will be able to study four optional subjects for the junior cycle. • They will get more time on each of their subjects and they will be working on the subjects they like from the beginning. 12
• We totally understand that this may be difficult for students who are not familiar with all the subjects we offer but when they arrive we will work with each student to help them explore different options if they wish. • Ms O’Riordan will give a presentation on the different subjects later. • Our aim is to ensure all students are happy and reach their potential and helping students choose the right subjects is very important. 13
How the Option Process Works Choosing First Year Options
Choose five of the following • Geography Your choices here • French • Spanish 1. _______________ • Business Studies 2. _______________ • Art 3. _______________ • Woodwork 4. _______________ • Technical Graphics 5. _______________ • Metalwork (You will only get 4 subjects. • Home Economics Enter subjects in order of preference) • Music
What will we do with the choices? • The choices are fed into a special computer programme. • It will then give us a set of options that satisfy the majority of students. • The options might look like this:
Sample Subject Bands Band 1 Geography Art Home Business French Music Woodwork Metalwork Economics Studies Band 2 French Woodwork Music Art Home Geography Business Technical Economics Studies Graphics Band 3 Spanish Technical French Woodwork Metalwork Business Home Music Graphics Studies Economics Band 4 Business Metalwork Geography Technical Art French Woodwork Art Studies Graphics • Students will get one subject on each band depending on their choices • Students can only do each subject once • Students can move subjects up until the mid term in October so they have time to settle in • There will be spare capacity in classes so it will be easy for students to move. 17
How to enter Subject Options • You will be sent a link to an online questionnaire by text. • The link to the questionnaire is : https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=5dxZqSWTaE6 FLpbAo2Za1t_r2Ov30rlEv4oBnRRfeAZUNldOREtWWDUzTEJQVkRPMk 5TN1YzNklOWi4u • You will be asked to put in five subjects starting with the favourite and working your way down. • The fifth choice will help the computer programme to create the bands.
How to enter Subject Options • Each student will only be doing four of the subjects. • You need to enter subject options before 25th March 2021. • Queries re: careers email emer.oriordan@sbc.ie • Other queries to admin@sbc.ie or teresa.vaughan@sbc.ie0879700380
