Denis Curry RWA, Dip. F.A. Slade, b.1918 Denis Curry is a Pembrokeshire based artist who utilises his direct involvement with animals and his environment in West Wales as a powerful source of inspiration for his painting and sculpture. An exceptional draughtsman, painter and sculptor, he has integrated aesthetics, aeronautics and natural sciences as a process in his art work, combining an extensive knowledge of nature’s engineering structure with poetic vision. As a child, Curry showed artistic flair and a passion for creativity. In a discussion with John Sansom in 1985, Curry describes how ‘drawing has been the central thing in my life from about the age of three. I drew on every possible surface, even on my mother’s black skirt with white chalk.' Curry also said his father showed him books, which included reproductions of paintings, and details how he then tried to copy these works, including Turner’s Bay of Baie in watercolours, at the age of seven. After leaving school, Curry went on to study architecture at Durham and, after two years, joined the Royal Engineers and saw active service during WWII in North Africa and Monte Casino. At the end of the war, Curry went to the Slade School of Fine Art, where he won a number of prizes for drawing and sculpture. From 1963 – 1978 Curry was the Head of Department of Foundation Studies West of England College of Art. During this period, Curry collaborated with John Elliot, Head of Aeronautical Research at Farnborough and Colin Pennycuick of Bristol University’s Department of Zoology. Curry’s involvement with both scientists displays how his artwork was heavily influenced by a keen interest in scientific study, the dynamics of flight, and the natural world. Since 1976 when he moved to West Wales Denis Curry has had a number of one-man shows, plus many commissions for painting and sculpture, drawing inspiration from his environment to produce exceptional sculptures, drawings and paintings. The Contemporary Arts Society of Wales (CASW) bought his work in 1999 and 2010. Tenby Museum and Art Gallery have two of the works, Celtic Eagle and Juvenilis Volans, on permanent display. Curry’s work has been exhibited widely, with his most recent shows including Tenby in 2011 and Capel y Gwraig in mid Wales in 2012. He is continuing to show at the RWA and The Gallery Yr Oriel Newport Pembs. The Gallery Yr Oriel Newport Pembs SA42 0TB . 01239 821514 . www.thegallery-yroriel.com . Open Mon – Sat 10 - 5pm
