FEBRUARY 2021 EBULLETIN - VOLUME 92 2021 EMERGING WRITERS SHORT PROSE COMPETITION winner The Shevchenko Foundation is pleased to announce that “Carpathian Spruce” by Thunder Bay area writer Adrian Lysenko is the winner of the 2021 Emerging Writers Short Prose Competition. “I am honoured to have won the second annual Shevchenko Foundation Emerging Writers Short Prose Competition. Like many initiatives created by the Shevchenko Foundation, this competition is an excellent opportunity to advance Ukrainian Adrian Lysenko Canadian culture”, said Mr. Lysenko. The jury members this year consisted of award-winning Canadian author Marsha Skrypuch, writer, literary critic and MacEwan University Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of Creative Writing Jacqueline Baker, and producer and librettist/writer and member of the Shevchenko Foundation Board of Directors, Gordon Gordey. KOBZAR™ BOOk award In 2020, BC author and poet Laisha Rosnau won the Kobzar™ Book Award for Our Familiar Hunger, a book of poetry exploring the lives of Eastern European women in Ukraine and Canada. Presented biennially, the Award recognizes outstanding contribution to Canadian literary arts by authors who write on a topic with a tangible connection to the Ukrainian Canadian experience. our shevchenko bookmark The Shevchenko Foundation congratulates Valeriy Semenko for his winning submission of artwork for the 2021 Shevchenko Foundation bookmark, based on the chosen literacy excerpt from Taras Shevchenko’s poem “Бандуристе, орле сизий…”/ “Bandurist, my blue-grey eagle…” Over 35,000 bookmarks will be printed and distributed across Canada to Ukrainian language schools, dance schools and youth organizations. Donors to Shevchenko Foundation will also be receiving the bookmarker as a token of our appreciation! Edmonton artist Valeriy Semenko was born in the picturesque part of Western Ukraine, Bukovyna, in 1961. He began his art education at the School of Fine Art in his hometown of Chernivtsi, and later became a student of the Ivan Fedoriv Valeriy Semenko Publishing Academy, Faculty of Graphic Arts, in Lviv, Ukraine. As a graphic artist he created and published illustrated thematic books and art calendars. His personal artistry and editorial expertise graced numerous art catalogues, posters, and invitations for numerous exhibitions which took place in Germany, France, Lithuania, and Ukraine. He is a member of the Union of Advertisement Makers of Ukraine. Artworks by Valeriy are in the private collections worldwide.
