GALLERY NOTES Cally Lotz paints. In our time, filled with the uncertainty of the pandemic, this contemporary realist painter continues her observations of the human spirit's endurance. Lotz finely layers oil paint on linen via painstakingly executed details on glass reflections and French linen folds, paper creases and twine string bends. Her art practice evolves from her home studio, surrounded by music, oil paint tubes, snippets of inspirational memories and the gentle sound of whiskey bubbling in the background. Standing in front of these oil paintings, the viewer senses a warm gentle glow, a tactile quality and the dry sense of humour that is characteristic of the artist. ‘In our Time’ is the second solo show by Cally Lotz in 2021 at West End Art Space. The first one drew massive crowds and was a great celebration. For now, this show remains on the gallery walls with the hope of a ‘closing’ little party. This show came to fruition with the support of the City of Melbourne arts grants. We will continue to show Cally’s artworks online and keep our audience connected. Please follow us on our social media, visit our website and support the artist and our gallery.
ARTIST STATEMENT My work continues to explore concepts of containment within the psychological context. It takes its cue from this particular moment in history with all the separately experienced anxieties determined by isolation and fear for our welfare. Employing a highly articulated painting style, the objects I portray are not chosen for any intrinsic beauty, but for the potential they offer to me as a painter. They are selected as a relatively neutral starting point for formal experiment. Acknowledging that there is always a gap between meaning and interpretation that relies on compensation and association by the viewer, my objective is to convey these simple ordinary objects as symbols of implied meaning. The methods of suggestion I use play with perceptions of similarity, affinity, uncertainty and ambiguity. -Cally Lotz 2021
