COMPASS NEWS Staff Spotlight Meet Mr. Mike Harris. Mr. Harris has worked in Perry Township for 6 years. He has come back to us this year from Perry Meridian Middle School. He coaches football and enjoys going to concerts and sporting events. The reason he likes working at the CEC is he loves seeing students accomplish their goals. Welcome back Mr. Harris! What is in a tone? As a staff here at the Compass Education Center, we are dis- cussing a new book, "WHAT WE SAY AND HOW WE SAY IT MATTER". How true is this? As we continue to move toward the end of the first quarter, our students are making some great progress. I would be remiss if I did not mention the great things we want for our students, your children. We want to see them graduate, go on to be successful and have a bright future, among other things. As we speak to them, we will continue to improve the positive communication and manner with which it is being delivered. As we close out the quarter, remind your child of the great things they are doing. Passing 6 classes, 5 classes or even less, remind them that they are earning credits to- ward graduation. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my short note.
Martzall’s Minute Due to the lack of interest, there will be no intersession during Fall Break. A parent square was sent out in regards to the CEC’s dress code guidelines. Please visit our website if you have any questions in regards to our dress code. All information can be found under the students tab. Have a great Weekend!! Springer’s Stake The counseling office has talked to your students several times since the start of school about Gradua- tion Pathways. We believe that the students understand the importance of Graduation Pathways, now we would like to explain it to the parents and guardians. Ultimately, we are hoping that you can have dis- cussions at home about Pathways to help students realize how critical this piece is in the graduation pro- cess. Most of us understand to get a diploma, a student must take and pass a block of core classes in Math, English, Science, Social Studies, PE/Health and fill in the remaining credits with electives you choose. We also understand taking and passing the state test (ISTEP and now SAT's) or, at least, sitting for it and trying to pass it each time, is also a requirement. Schools have also added ASVAB testing to the mix as a way of passing a standardized test. The state now has mandated if a student cannot pass the standardized tests given (ISTEP, SAT and or ASVAB), a student can take focused electives in a certain subject that build upon each other as another option. These electives can come from attending any Central Nine Career Center program, or taking classes here at Compass in Business and Marketing , Engineering, Computer, Human and Social Ser- vices or Health fields. Lastly, we must prove to the state that each student has employability skills. This can be proven by the student turning in hours from their part-time job as Work Based Learning Credits. A student can also prove employability skills by obtaining proof of volunteer work, baby sitting, mowing lawns, etc. Turning in hours is essential in proving that they are actively participating in some sort of work based learning. If your student is an athlete, this is another way to show the student is involved in extracurricular activi- ties that help them gain knowledge of the soft skills needed in real world employment. If your student cannot obtain proof using any of those options, never fear! Our Business teacher is work- ing with students to build a portfolio that includes personalized resumes, cover letters, and references. They also work as a group to learn interview skills and soft skills needed in employment. Please help us by talking to your students about how important it is to follow through on the expectations laid out for them. We want your students not only to graduate, but to have skills necessary to become successful, employable adults! White’s Wonders Did you know that Southport High School has a food pantry? It is located inside of Southport High School and has a variety of non-perishable food items, fresh and frozen items, and necessary household items. This food pantry is open to any Perry Township resident and has drop in hours on Wednesdays from 11-1. On Wednesday's you can drive up to door 18 facing Banta Road and someone will be there to greet you. If that time does not work for you, you can access it during school hours with me. Just send me an email or call me. We can set up a time to go!
Congratulations to the August Students of the Month and Staff Member of the Month! David Wesley is a former NBA player from 1993-2007. He played for the New Jersey Nets, the Boston Celtics, the Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, the Hou- ston Rockets and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He will be coming to the CEC as a motivational speak to talk to the students. We hope all our students will plan on coming to meet this former professional basketball player and listen to his message on October 4th at 9:30 a.m. David Wesley to visit the CEC!
