Tele-education expansion possibilities in Medical Colleges/Institutes covered under E-Class Rooms under NMCN Dilip Barman Director, ERNET India (Education and Research Network)
TeleEducation- the definition 2 Tele-education is conventionally defined as: any educational or learning process or system in which the teacher and instructor are separated geographically or in time from his or her students; or in which students are separated from other students or educational resources.

The initiative… 4 MOHFW has taken initiative in establishment in National Medical College Network (NMCN) As part of the initiative, E-Class Rooms are being established in 49 medical Colleges and in SGPGI Lucknow, which is a National Resource Centre(NRC).
The initiative.. 5 ERNET India has been entrusted with the job of Establishment of E-Class rooms. As part of establishment of E Class Rooms, Equipment supplied are: i) Video Conference Equipment, ii) LED TVs of different sizes, iii) Projector, Projector screens, microphones
The Initiative… 6 iv) Podiums equipped with audio visual systems v) Book reader etc, Complete range of equipment have been supplied so that a full-fledged E-Class Room is established in each of the Medical colleges/Institutes.
Project under NMCN –Present Status 8 Setting up of E-Classroom Infrastructure in 50 Medical Colleges for MoHFW The project is for managing and maintaining the Classroom Infrastructure for 5 years including provisioning of 2 manpower each. Medical Colleges/Institutes live on NMCN…. 15 45 Colleges + NRC live on NMCN. It has increased the capacity of the Institutes/Medical Colleges, as these are directly connected to the country wide network of 50 Medical Colleges NMCN Scheme has enabled the medical Colleges/Institutes to access the Professionals and learners at various institutions for delivering and gaining knowledge through Tele-Education mode.
Enabling Tele Education…. 16 As the Infrastructure in Medical Colleges/Institutes have been established, the institutes can demonstrate live surgery/Live Medical Procedures from Operation Theatre to the e-classroom by adding the only one or two equipment like camera in the OT.
Enabling Tele Education…. 17 All the Medical Colleges/Institutes can utilize the network for i) For Students for MBBS ii) Students perusing PG through and iii)continuous medical education for Doctors/Faculty Members/Students/ Paramedics etc.
Enabling Tele Education…. 18 Utilization of the network will increase the possibilities for better meeting of convenience, relevance, individualization, self-assessment, independent learning and systematic approach (CRISIS) criteria for effective continuous medical education.
Enabling Tele-Education…. 19 The Medical Students can improve themselves professionally and independently utilizing the services of Medical professionals at other medical colleges through the already implemented Information & Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure established by ERNET India under NMCN Scheme.
Enabling the Medical fraternity… 20 Tele-education plays significant role in imparting medical education especially in postgraduate and continuous medical education for doctors, students, paramedical staffs etc. Through the established e-classroom infrastructure, All the medical Colleges/Institutes could get the following advantages in terms of flexible education imparting and gaining.
Benefits of E-class Room.. 21 It is possible to distribute the educational contents uniformly. The new educational programs are available for fields outside of the medical institutions also. It enables the possibility of access to the educational resources to the various institutions; Superior quality of the knowledge gained through mutual interactions of the participating institutes.
Benefits of E-class Room.. 22 More efficiency and high educational standards to the students and teaching staffs. Increase capacity of the institution. Reducing the Costs of educational process. Making the resources available through Tele-education.
ERNET India’s role ahead- Preparing for the IT/ITS services for Continuous Education for the Medical Fraternity.. 23 ERNET India has imparted two days trainings at RRCs which has highly benefited the Senior level professionals and Nodal Officers and team identified by the institutes. Trainings programs for the Medical Colleges under all RRCs have already been completed.
ERNET India’s role ahead- Preparing for the 24 IT/ITS services… The dates for trainings in other RRCs are being finalized by RRCs in coordination with colleges/institutes. The Training program will cover the NMCN orientation, IT training, Process training and activity training.
Vision for the Immediate future: Extension 25 of Ideas…. Basic infrastructure for Tele-Education has been established. With additional one or two video equipment like camera etc, Live Surgery/Live Medical procedures can be streamed to the E-Class Room/to the network so that students/doctors can observe/understand the live surgery/Live medical procedures.
Tele-Educations for Live Surgeries /Live 26 Procedures Video streaming for Live surgery/Live Medical procedures can be very useful for Medical students who wish to see and understand live surgeries/Live procedures. It will be very helpful especially for any new procedures available for newer medical procedures for Zika Virus etc.

Moving on... Hosting in cloud 31 Once the basic infrastructure is established, the contents generated would be edited and uploaded in the servers in NRC/Cloud in the near future. The present storage capacity available for the lectures about 30T. Considering 10 Lectures session of 1 hr, storage available - 1 year. By the time, the storage is exhausted, we need to upgrade the infrastructure and at the same time migrate to Clouds.
Moving on... Accessing the Contents 32 Links are shared to the students/doctors for accessing the contents/lectures of the Professors/teachers concerned. The same infrastructure may be used for participations of the students in India to the lectures elsewhere in the country.

Factors affecting Success of the 34 project… Extent of success of the project will depend on utilization of the infrastructure by the colleges Co-ordination from National Resource Centre, Lucknow/RRCs/Medical Colleges/Institutes.
