From the Desk of: Maury Treleven Special Projects Consultant, Gonzales, Greenfield & Soledad Tri-Cities Disposal & Recycling 831-262-2156 mtr11@outlook.com City of Greenfield 2022 Reuse, Recycle & Cleanup Day #1 Report May 6, 2022 Submitted to: Mayor & City Council of the City of Greenfield through the Office of the City Manager On Saturday, April 30, 2022, the City of Greenfield, Tri-Cities Disposal & Recycling, and Salinas Valley Recycles hosted a “Reuse, Recycle & Cleanup Day” event at the City of Greenfield Corporation Yard from 8 AM-12 PM. This time window has proven optimum in serving the community and maximizing paid staff time. The City of Greenfield public works yard is an ideal location for these events. It has plenty of space to map out the dumpsters and maintain a safe traffic flow in and out of the event. These events provide an alternative to illegal dumping on the streets, alleyways, and backroads adjacent to the community while “lightening the load” of built-up trash for residents. The line of vehicles waiting for the event to open speaks to their continued need and popularity. Public Works staff provides feedback that these events keep alleyways and roadsides clean, allowing the department staff the opportunity to focus on other important work and community services. The event was able to achieve a high diversion rate through source separation. Salinas Valley Recycles collected clothing donations and delivered them to Goodwill. The Salinas Valley Recycles hazardous waste team offered the safe collection and disposal of antifreeze, batteries, oil, paint, and medical sharps. Monterey County Environmental Health coordinated and provided vouchers for an oil filter exchange. At the event this summer, we will work to pull out clean cardboard from loads and place it in public works recycling dumpsters already on site. The lack of clean rigid plastics coming to this location does not currently necessitate a dumpster for recycling.
Tri-Cities is grateful to the team at Greenfield Public Works for their enthusiastic support and their positive attitude in serving their community. These events continue to be successful due to the collaboration of a great team of professionals from Salinas Valley Recycles, Monterey County Environmental Health, and Tri-Cities Disposal & Recycling. 2022 Spring Event Diversion/Recycling: 11.4 tons Trash: 9.0 tons Total Collected: 20.4 tons Diversion Rate: 56% 2022 Events 2021 Events 2013-2019 Events Spring Fall Summer Avg Tons Tons Tons Tons Trash 9.0 7.19 11.79 8.68 Metal Recycling 5.75 3.84 5.74 4.57 Mattresses* 0.47 (17 pcs) 0.58 (21 pcs) 0.72 (26 pcs) -- Appliances (All)* 2.67 2.02 (24 pcs) 1.25 2.82 Mixed Recycling -- 1.12 -- 1.10 Electronic Waste 0.47 1.60 1.60 1.87 Donations* 1.13 0.34 0.34 0.74 0.88 Haz.
