Australian String Quartet
 Remember Tomorrow

Ross Edwards, Gallipoli* (World Premiere performances)
Shostakovich, String Quartet no 3 in F major, op 73

With guest artist Wilma Smith, violin I
Presented in association with Adelaide Festival

The Australian String Quartet begins its 30th Anniversary year with an homage to
the past and a view to the future. In 1985, the ASQ’s first public concert opened,
as this one does, with Haydn’s powerful Emperor quartet. Another landmark in
2015 is the centenary of the ANZAC landing in Gallipoli and for this occasion, an
evocative and moving work titled Gallipoli has been commissioned from one
of Australia’s best-known composers Ross Edwards. Shostakovich’s String
Quartet no 3 was written in response to the Second World War - full of emotion
and questioning – with despair yet passionate hopes for a better future.

Kegelstatt Ensemble
2015 is Kegelstatt’s tenth year of concert presentations. To mark this milestone, we
invited our audiences to help curate the year’s programs, choosing their favourites
from all our past concerts. Mailing list members took up this opportunity with great
care and enthusiasm, and between us all we have arrived at a beautiful selection
of music. Each concert will be presented in Adelaide and Melbourne, with Adelaide
concerts as follows:

The Divine
Sunday 23rd August, 3.00pm Elder Hall, North Terrace, Adelaide

Here we explore the music of composers who have yearned to break free of the
formal boundaries inherent in western art music, turning instead to the exotic and
the mystical for inspiration. Works by Holst, Lieberman, Debussy & Crumb.

The Human
Sunday 22nd November, 3.00pm St John’s, Halifax Street, Adelaide

In our dichotomy of human and divine, these giants of 20th century composition
speak eloquently and intelligently about humanity. They express the trouble, anxiety
and bewilderment brought about by the tumultuous world events they have
witnessed. They also portray the human need for order and structure, the need
for a place to call home and a cultural heritage, and the universal desire to dance.
Works by Mozart, Schnittke, Bartók & Penderecki.
