A number of highlights immediately catch the eye, with two new productions for The Playhouse Theatre & Peacebuilding Academy reflecting people’s first-hand experiences of The Troubles, plus visits from children’s favourites, the Paula Lambert Puppet Theatre, and a performance of her own moving story of ‘The Emigrant Woman’s Tale’ by a poet with a unique voice in Northern Ireland, Csilla Toldy. The Arts Council is proud to be the principal funder of The Playhouse through our Public and National Lottery funds. Booking essential. TRUE STORIES FROM THE FRONT LINE Devised by the Cast Directed by Ailin Conant Throat clenches. Palm sweats. Vision tunnels. Breath shallows. Stomach knots. We all share a nervous system designed to respond to crisis in a certain way. But what happens when your professional duty requires you to run towards the scene of the horror, at a time when every- one else is running away? First Response has been created and performed by Fire-fighters, Paramedics, Nurses, Journalists, Community Workers, and Counsellors who worked the front lines of some of the most difficult experiences of The Troubles. What secrets do these men and women hold in their physiology, and how can their story help us understand ourselves and the society we live in today? 7
THE EMIGRANT WOMAN’S TALE Friday 6th March, 8pm Tickets £12/ £10 (includes £1 development contribution) The Emigrant Woman’s Tale is a story told through poetry, song and spoken word. “An inspirational performance that is sometimes humorous, often moving and always thought provoking....highly recommended.” Colum Sands, BBC Radio Ulster The story describes poet Csilla Toldy’s growing up and escape from Communist Hungary to eventually living in Northern Ireland - juxtaposed with songwriter Fil Campbell’s story of growing up on the Irish border and staying in Northern Ireland throughout the conflict. A tale of two girls from opposite ends of Europe and when their paths crossed many common themes emerged.

Green Shoot Productions present IN THE NAME OF THE SON by Richard O’Rawe and Martin Lynch Friday 13th March, 8pm Tickets £14 (includes £1 development contribution) An exciting new play chronicling the extraordinary life of Gerry Conlon (The Guildford 4) following his release from prison in 1989. No one can forget the TV images of him outside The Old Bailey, proclaim- ing, “I am a totally innocent man!” This play charts Conlon’s journey into ‘freedom’ as he received over £1million pounds, became a cause-celebre running in the same circles as Johnny Depp and Daniel Day Lewis. He seemed to have it all but, fuelled by an addiction to crack-cocaine, his life was spiralling out of control. What emerges from the darkness is Conlon’s resilience and his eventual life-changing recovery to beat his demons to become a world-renowned Human Rights cam- paigner. Written by Gerry’s lifelong friend Richard O’Rawe and Martin Lynch the play explores tri- umph of the human spirit over extreme adversity.

EXPLORING THE PEACE: THEATRE OF WITNESS WORKSHOPS Free* What is Theatre of Witness? Theatre of Witness is an inspirational project al- lowing victims and survivors of the Troubles to re-tell their often harrowing experiences on-stage through theatre performance. Who are the performers in Theatre of Witness? Performers include former police officers, para- militaries and relatives of those killed or injured. Audiences witness performers from vastly different backgrounds who work together on-stage to give a message of understanding, empathy, reconcilia- tion and hope. Tell me about the workshops? Workshops enable performers (e.g. ex-police officer and ex-paramilitary) to screen video foot- age of their stories from the original Theatre of Witness production, and talk about their experi- ences.
