BRUSH FARM DOG TRAINING CLUB INC.
Established 1967. Affiliated RNSWCC (Dogs NSW) 1969

WHAT WE DO
❖ Brush Farm Dog Training Club is a non-profit organisation run by a dedicated team of volunteers, committed to serving
the local community and promoting responsible dog ownership. We teach people to train their dog to be socialised
and obedient, and promote participation in canine obedience sports.
❖ Each year our club delivers over 300 hours of training classes, trains over 500 dogs, & runs three trials, attracting
over 250 competitors from across Sydney
❖ Training provides a benefit to both dog owners and the wider community - dogs that have participated in obedience
training are less likely to be surrendered to pounds and animal shelters due to behavioural problems or aggression
  than dogs with no training.
❖ Attending training for just one hour each Sunday afternoon at Brush Farm Park will give you the skills to train your
dog to be a happy, well behaved member of your family.

CLUB NEWS

Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation with our COVID safety measures. It has been a strange
and unpredictable year and we want to say how grateful we are for our members’ continuing support this year, as
well as extending a big welcome to our many new members who have joined in recent months. Remember that
your current memberships are valid through to the end of 2021!

IMPORTANT DATES:
Sunday October 25th – NO TRAINING due to the running of our DOUBLE
RALLY O TRIAL
Sunday November 29th 2020 – LAST DAY OF TRAINING FOR 2020
Sunday January 31st – FIRST DAY OF TRAINING FOR 2021 (and new
member registrations)
Sunday February 7th – FIRST PUPPY CLASS STARTS FOR 2021

XMAS PARTY
Unfortunately, there will be no DOGS XMAS PARTY this year due to safety
considerations. But this event will hopefully return bigger and better than
ever next year. We will be including fun games (and perhaps doggy
presents!) in our final training classes on SUNDAY NOVEMBER 29th.

STEWARDS NEEDED FOR OCTOBER 25TH
If you would like to be a part of our Double Rally O Trial, please see Heidi
or Noel at the Clubhouse to register your interest. Stewards are needed to
help with the smooth running of the day. You will be assigned to a team
and given one or two simple tasks (organizing competitors, ring set-up,
assisting judges). It is a fantastic way to find out more about competitive
dog sports, as well as getting to know more of our members – it’s usually a
fun day out!

Note that no prior experience is necessary. We will teach you everything
you need to know on the day. (And if you are unavailable this time, keep in
mind we have another trial early next year in March!)

CONNECT WITH US ON FACEBOOK!
Facebook is a great way to stay in touch with us over the Dec/Jan Summer
Break. We will try to post regular content to help keep you engaged with
dog training. We also have a FB Group where you can post updates, ask
questions and stay connected. We like to post training challenges and
videos whenever we get a chance – there’s a lot of great info to be found
there!

ran out.

As Anne will tell you, you think you know someone until
you hear their life story read out at their funeral and what
a life Bettie had - especially being fostered out in her early
years, becoming attached to the lady in Newcastle where
her love of showing and breeding dogs began, and then
having her own family. Anne and I met many of Bettie’s
family on the day of her funeral and they were delighted to
see us there representing the club that Bettie was a part
of for many years .

Bettie in the years that we knew her bred Border Collies
and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and we all heard the
stories of their litters and their results in the showring .

Bettie lived just over the road from Brush Farm in the
house she helped build along with her husband in times
when things were not as easy as they are today.

A message from Instructor Peter Hewitt:

Lydia and I regret to advise that our much-loved dog Binzi
passed away mid-September after a long battle with
cancer. She was courageous and friendly to the end,
although the cancer medication slowed her down and
caused her to sleep a lot. In the end, she died peacefully
in her sleep. We miss her dreadfully. She made many
friends in and around Beecroft, and we thank all those
who have sent messages of condolence.

[Editor’s note: Binzi made many friends at Brush Farm as
well! She was a sweet girl and will be greatly missed.]

DANIELLE’S DOGGY DIARY
                                         by Danielle Leong (Instructor)

This time around I thought I would share with you some of my favourite doggy books, in case you needed a summer
reading list! So here we go…

The Other End of the Leash by Particia McConnell is the book that opened my eyes to the intricacies of dog
behaviour, and made me question what I thought I knew about traditional dog training “wisdom” – everything
Patricia writes is wonderful and this is a great book for anyone interested in dogs. Another great writer is Alexandra
Horowitz who loves to take you deep into the mind and experiences of dogs (all via science!) – Being a Dog explores
dogs’ amazing scenting abilities, which can make you appreciate the importance of sniffy walks to your dog! Dog is
Love by Clive Wynne is another fantastic science-based read about how completely awesome dogs are. And Don’t
Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor is a classic in dog training circles – give it a go!

Here are a few practical dog training books for you. Cooperative Care is a passion of mine – I love teaching dogs to
be happy with all things related to handling, grooming, cleaning and vet care. This book by Deb Jones is also a great
manual on how to break down complex behaviours into bite-size pieces. You’ll be a much better trainer for working
through it! Leslie McDevvitt has three Control Unleashed books and they are all worth reading. I use her principles
ALL THE TIME with my own dogs and clients’ dogs. She has lots of great choice-based training games to help
nervous, over-excited or reactive dogs. For all our competition/trialing dogs, I cannot recommend Hannah
Branigan’s Awesome Obedience book enough! If you want lovely heeling, precise positions and reliable trial
behaviours, GET THIS BOOK! And finally, Ken Ramirez’s book The Eye of the Trainer is on my own reading list for
this summer. Ken is simply a fantastic animal trainer who has a wealth of experience working with both domestic
animals and wildlife. I always enjoy what he has to say and I can’t wait to read his latest book.

{And for those of you who like podcasts! Have a listen to Cog-Dog Radio, Drinking From the Toilet, The Bitey End of
the Dog, Dog Talk with Nick Benger, and Everything Dog Training}
