The 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 17, 2021 A Letter from Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, Wishing you many blessings in 2021! I hope you all had a joyous Christmas. I am very thankful for everyone’s generosity not just at Christmas but throughout the year. We could not bring the message of Christ to everyone without your support. 2020 was a very unusual year for all of us due to Covid-19 but we remain hopeful & faithful, knowing God sees the bigger picture. At Visitation we have addressed the challenges that the pandemic has presented always with the attitude of making everyone feel welcome and safe as they come to praise our Lord. The generosity of the parishioners has helped us to offset some of the additional costs we are incurring, such as having a professional cleaning service sanitize the church after every Mass. This allows us to continue to offer 5 Masses each weekend. We also have been committed to reaching those who could not come to Mass and we began livestreaming the Masses. Our goal is to bring our parish family together as best we can under the current circumstances. Looking ahead to this year, I’m praying that the Covid-19 virus will be eradicated, and we all will once again be able to come together at church to worship. Until that happens, we will continue to do all that we can to reach out to all our parishioners and share the Good News. I miss your smiling faces! May God bless you & your families in 2021! Jesus I Trust in You, SANCTITY OF LIFE MASS ARMED FORCES PRAYER LIST We remember and pray for the protection Friday, January 22, 6 PM of our military as they serve in our Armed We will be celebrating a special Mass on Friday, Forces. January 22nd to pray for all of those affected by U.S. Air Force abortion. MSGT Kevin M. James (Andrews AFB, MD) Please join us as we pray for the healing all of the AMN Natalee Arbino (Wright Paterson, OH) women and men who have been hurt by abortion and AMN E2 Jacob Neimanas (Travis AFB, CA) for the souls of the innocent children. A1C Eric E. James (Dyess AFB, Abilene, TX) The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions U.S. Army of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with PFC Michael Perrone (Germany) heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a MAJ Patrick Leen (IL.) “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in 1 LT Joseph D. Frost (Ft. Knox, KY) God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in CPT Nicholas Keller (Ft. Knox, KY) Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, 1 LT Thomas J. Diwisch (Fort Bragg, NC) we believe that our prayers are heard. SPC Stephen J. Taylor (Ft. Riley, KS) 2 LT Francesca Cervone (Fairbanks, AK) “Babies are such a nice way to start people.” 1 LT Nathanial A. Greenberg (Ft Leonard Wood, MO) ~ Don Herold CPT Kathleen M. Donofrio (Afghanistan) U.S. Army National Guard People like our 106-year old Vis parishioner. Born in PVT Christopher J Slowinski (Ft. Leonard Wood, MO) Indiana to immigrant parents, she left home following high school in hopes of finding work in Chicago during MAJ Joseph Doyle (ID) the Great Depression. She has lived through two world CPL James Kotowski (Afghanistan) wars, the Korean War, the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan U.S. Coast Guard wars, and numerous other military conflicts. She has seen CPO Patrick Kirby (TX) 10 popes and 18 presidents hold office. Married once, she U.S. Marine Corps has six children, 14 grandchildren, and 17 great- PVT Nicholas Acevedo (CA) grandchildren. Wherever she is, she exudes love. CPT Kurt P. James (Okinawa) Some people think that pro-lifers are only interested in SGT David Byrne (Japan) saving babies. Not so. People start off as babies. It’s CPL Eric E. Gibas (Camp Pendleton, CA) God’s way. When we save babies, we save people. Like PVT Dominic Tosto (San Diego, CA) our parishioner. Like everyone else. The 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 17, 2021 MASS INTENTIONS GOSPEL REFLECTION January 17, 2021 MONDAY, JANUARY 18 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 6:15 AM +Richard and Carmella Kapraun Our faith is not just about ideas. It’s really about having an encounter with God and, in particular, the Risen Christ! 8:15 AM Once we give ourselves over to the notion of God’s +Claire Guistolise presence, we have to train ourselves to listen for God’s Intentions of Mary B. Flynn voice and be attentive to God’s call. Having companions on our faith journeys is so incredibly important as they can TUESDAY, JANUARY 19 help us fine-tune our listening skills and discern God’s 6:15 AM voice from others we may be hearing. Faith is all about +Winifred Micks having these profound encounters not only with God but 8:15 AM with our brothers and sisters, and creation itself. Anyone or +Belen Banuelos anything that is alive with God’s presence becomes an +Larry Theriopoulos occasion for God to speak and call us to deeper graces and +Maria Tracz-Sosna experiences. “Come, and you will see.” WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20 The example and teaching of Jesus, the lives of the saints, 6:15 AM those living among us and those glorified in heaven, and +Don Micks the wonder and beauty of creation can all serve to help us 8:15AM listen more clearly and assist in positioning ourselves for Intentions of Frank and Joseph Guistolise this profound God meeting. It is an encounter that can +Brenda Fetsch quickly and easily lead to a friendship and intimate intertwining of our souls to their Maker, making a claim on THURSDAY, JANUARY 21 us like no other. Then, the Word of God moves from being 6:15 AM just a body of ideas to something we simply accept and do. The person of Jesus Christ swiftly moves from being just a +Tom Fahey good prophet in word and deed to the incarnate presence of 8:15AM God Himself, the Lamb of God. The voice leads us to the Intentions of Leo Flynn Person behind it. FRIDAY, JANUARY 22 The Gospel is hard to follow. We can intellectually debate 6:15 AM whether what Jesus said is really what we are asked to do. +Anna David The Gospel ideas do not always make sense in our 8:15 AM practical, secular world. The person of God always does. +Joseph Sweeney We can debate the practicality and sense of ideas and SATURDAY, JANUARY 23 doing so often keeps the more difficult ones at a safe distance away from us. Jesus said to love our enemy, but 8:15AM we really don’t need to do that, our minds try to convince +Helen Gravante us. It just doesn’t make sense. Yet, if we are truly in love +Debra Stone with the God who is behind the voice of those words, they 4:00 PM make perfect sense. Our deep and intimate love of this God +Robert Murphy would even find us laying down our lives for Him if SUNDAY, JANUARY 24 necessary. Speak Lord, your servant is listening. 7:30AM Readings for the week of January 17, 2021 Intentions of Micks Family 9:30AM Sunday: 1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19/1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17-20/ People of Visitation Parish Jn 1:35-42 +Pete Carey Monday: Heb 5:1-10/Mk 2:18-22 11:30AM Tuesday: Heb 6:10-20/ Mk 2:23-28 +Betty Gore Wednesday: Heb 7:1-3, 15-17/Mk 3:1-6 +Francisco Vasquez Thursday: Heb 7:25—8:6/Mk 3:7-12 6:00 PM Friday: Heb 8:6-13/Mk 3:13-19 +Louise Talko Saturday: Heb 9:2-3, 11-14/Mk 3:20-21 +Charlotte Ronske Next Sunday: +Les Heavrin Jon 3:1-5, 10/1 Cor 7:29-31/Mk 1:14-20
