Pastoral Communications – Fr. Frank Alleluia, the LORD is Risen! Beloved Parishioners May the Peace and Joy of our Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ be with you! It gladdens my heart to wish you a Happy Easter and all the divine promises the Risen Lord bestows upon those who bless His Name. Our Christian faith informs us, that there is no day of the entire year that can compare with EASTER SUNDAY. No wonder St. Athanasius described the Easter Sunday as: “the Great Sunday of Sundays”, “the Great Feast of feasts”, “the Great Solemnity of solemnities.” If Christ had not risen from the dead on the Easter Sunday morning, and appeared to his disciples and empowered them with the Holy Spirit, the disciples would never have the courage to preach the Good News of the Resurrection to the ends of the earth. But they proclaimed Him because they had seen Him alive after His Resurrection. The Resurrection of Christ is a great testament that though evil, and Covid -19, and death, and all the other trials, still exist around us, these will not have the last word, but God alone who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will have the last word. As St. Paul testifies: “We now know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him.” (Romans 6:4, 9) So, knowing that we are Easter people saved through Christ’s sacrificial death and Resurrection, let us rejoice and be glad that we have a share in His triumphant victory and glory, at God’s right hand in the heavenly places. Alleluia! H appy Easter! God has truly conquered death. While I was preparing this year’s bulletin, I went back to the article I wrote last year. It is amazing how God has brought us through the dark days when our Church doors were physically closed. As I stated last year– God has shown us that as long as we have faith nothing can keep us from the love of Him. We are truly blessed that many of our families have returned to Masses, and our Religious Education programs. We need to continue to pray that soon, everyone will be able to come back to worship with us. I want to thank everyone who has helped with our Lent and Holy Week liturgies. There are so many people who have volunteered to create a beautiful sacred space for all the faithful. Thank you sacristans, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, ushers, music leaders: Elisa Hughes, Joan Naylor and Javier Dones and all of the music ministry members, altar servers, arts & environment and our PowerPoint crew. Your work shows all of us the love you have for our parish community. God bless, Kim Paczynski
Divine Mercy Sunday, April 11th with Adoration and Divine If you would like to have your child Baptized, please Mercy Chaplet. 1:00pm contact Kim in the church office. Because of the current Adoration restrictions, we will not have Baptisms during Mass until 2:30pm Chaplet further notice. We will be offering Baptisms on Saturday morning, or after the Spanish Mass (with permission 3:00pm Benediction. from the presiding priest). The Octave of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday The celebration of Our Lord’s Resurrection continues in the Church for eight days, called the Octave of Easter. Each day of the Octave is ranked as a Solemnity in the Church’s liturgical calendar, the highest ranking of liturgical feasts. At Masses during the Octave of Easter, as on Sundays, the Gloria, is recited or sung. And at the end of each Mass of the Octave, the double Alleluia is sung at the dismissal. The idea of an Octave of a great feast has its roots in the Old Testament. There are many Jewish feasts that lasted for eight days, for example, the feast of Passover and the feast of Tabernacles. In the Catholic Church, we celebrate eight days of Christmas as well as eight days of Easter. The Gospel readings at Masses during the Octave of Easter include passages from the Gospels that relate various appearances of the Risen Jesus. Reflecting on these Gospel texts is a wonderful way to prolong the celebration of Easter. Each day during the Octave, we proclaim in the Gospel Acclamation: This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. The Octave of Easter ends on the Second Sunday of Easter, the Sunday of Divine Mercy. In the Jubilee Year 2000, at the Mass in which he canonized the humble religious Sister Faustina Kowalska, Blessed John Paul II declared that from then on throughout the Church the Second Sunday of Easter would also be called the Sunday of Divine Mercy. This is entirely appropriate since, as Blessed John Paul II reminded us, “Divine Mercy is “the Easter gift that the Church receives from the risen Christ and offers to humanity… .” Mankind’s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the twentieth century, when civilization began to experience an “eclipse of the sense of God,” and therefore, to lose the understanding of the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life. In 1931, Jesus appeared to Sr. Faustina in Poland and expressed his desire for a feast celebrating his mercy. The Feast of Mercy was to be on the Sunday after Easter and was to include a public blessing and liturgical veneration of His image with the inscription “Jesus, I trust in You.” St. John Paul II explains the hope of the Divine Mercy message: This promise of mercy has been affirmed by the Church, which has made Divine Mercy Sunday an occasion for receiving a plenary indulgence, “the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sin whose guilt has already been forgiven” (CCC, no. 1471). The plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful under the usual conditions (Confession, Eucharist, prayer for the intentions of the pope, and complete detachment from sin, even venial sin). The faithful may either take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy in any church or chapel or recite the Our Father and Creed in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus. There are many aspects of the Divine Mercy devotion, including the Chaplet, the Divine Mercy image, and the “hour of great mercy” (3:00 p.m.). The popularity of these devotions, focused on the Lord’s infinite mercy, has grown rapidly in recent decades. Regarding the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, St. Faustina wrote that Jesus said to her, “At the hour of their death, I defend as My own glory every soul that will say this chaplet; or when others say it for a dying person “ (Divine Mercy in My Soul, no. 811).
