Divine Service Stories of God @ Work RECEIVING THE GOOD NEWS Opening Praise “O Christ, Our True and Only Light” [LSB 839] O Christ, our true and only light, Enlighten those who sit in night; Let those afar now hear Your voice And in Your fold with us rejoice. Fill with the radiance of Your grace The souls now lost in error’s maze; Enlighten those whose inmost minds Some dark delusion haunts and blinds. Shine on the darkened and the cold; Recall the wand’rers to Your fold. Unite all those who walk apart; Confirm the weak and doubting heart, That they with us may evermore Such grace with wond’ring thanks adore And endless praise to You be giv’n By all Your Church in earth and heav’n. Entering Prayers [Psalm 62] L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. L: God alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress so I shall not be greatly shaken. C: Wait in silence for God alone, O my soul, for our hope is from him. L: Trust in him at all times, O people and pour out your hearts before him. C: Power belongs to God, and to him belongs steadfast love. L: Almighty God, you sent your Son to proclaim your kingdom and to teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of your Spirit, that we, too, may bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. [1]
Hymn of Praise “To God on High Be Glory” [LSB 204] To God on high be glory and peace to all the earth; Good-will from God in heaven proclaimed at Jesus’ birth! We praise and bless You, Father; Your holy name we sing – Our thanks for Your great glory, Lord God, our heavenly King. To You, O sole-begotten, the Father’s Son, we pray; O Lamb of God, our Savior, You take our sins away. Have mercy on us, Jesus; receive our heartfelt cry, Where You in power are seated at God’s right hand on high. For You alone are holy; You only are the Lord. Forever and forever, be worshipped and adored; You with the Holy Spirit alone are Lord Most High, In God the Father’s glory. “Amen!” our glad reply. Scripture Reading 1 Corinthians 7:29-35 L: Today’s Scripture reading is from 1 Corinthian 7. 29This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, 30and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, 31and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. 32I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. 33But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, 34and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. 35I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord. L: This is the word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Announcements Children’s Sermon and Attendance Registration Please let us know you are watching by sending us a comment or an emoji. [2]
Hymn of the Day “Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus” [LSB 685] Let us ever walk with Jesus, Follow His example pure, Through a world that would deceive us And to sin our spirits lure. Onward in His footsteps treading, Pilgrims here, our home above, Full of faith and hope and love, Let us do the Father’s bidding. Faithful Lord, with me abide; I shall follow where You guide. Let us suffer here with Jesus And with patience bear our cross. Joy will follow all our sadness; Where He is, there is no loss. Though today we sow no laughter, We shall reap celestial joy; All discomforts that annoy Shall give way to mirth hereafter. Jesus, here I share Your woe; Help me there Your joy to know. Let us gladly die with Jesus. Since by death He conquered death, He will free us from destruction, Give to us immortal breath. Let us mortify all passion That would lead us into sin; And the grave that shuts us in Shall but prove the gate to heaven. Jesus, here with You I die, There to live with You on high. Let us also live with Jesus. He has risen from the dead That to life we may awaken. Jesus, You are now our head. We are Your own living members; Where You live, there we shall be In Your presence constantly, Living there with You forever. Jesus, let me faithful be, Life eternal grant to me. Text: © 1978 Lutheran Book of Worship. Sermon “Anxiety Free” 1 Corinthians 7:32-34 RESPONDING TO THE GOOD NEWS (see the back cover for this week’s prayer concerns) The Prayer of the Church L: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. (after each petition) L: Lord in your mercy: C: Hear our prayer. L: All these things and whatever else You know that we need, grant us, Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever. C: Amen. [3]
Our Primary Prayer focus for this week is on Christ’s work through his Word: Calming all hearts that are filled with fear, shame, pride, or grief. As we discover new ways to search the scripture together and care for our neighbor. As the Holy Spirit develops faith in children and youth – through family devotions and other means. For people and families to read from the Bible and pray together daily. And we pray for the safety and wellbeing all students and educators. And we remember those at both ends of life on this earth, the unborn and newly born, the elderly and those nearing life's end, remembering especially all pregnant mothers, those with COVID 19, those who are in hospice care. † In Our Thoughts and Prayers † For Loved Ones Called Home: For the family of Richard MacArthur (former member) who was called home on January 19th. KINGDOM THOUGHTS “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62.8) How often do other words replace him and God in your life? Offertory “Thy Works, Not Mine, O Christ [LSB 565, vs. 1 & 4] Thy works, not mine, O Christ, Speak gladness to this heart; They tell me all is done, They bid my fear depart. Refrain Refrain: To whom save Thee, Who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee? Thy death, not mine, O Christ, Has paid the ransom due; Ten thousand deaths like mine Would have been all too few. Refrain Confession and Absolution [Romans 10] L: The word is near you; in your mouth and in your heart, that is, the word of faith that we proclaim. C: If we declare with our mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. L: There is no difference between Jew and Gentile – the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him. C: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. L: Together as His people let us call upon the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, open our ears and our hearts to your Word, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. (silence for reflection and self-examination) L: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and by his blood we are made new. As a called and ordained servant of Jesus, I therefore forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. SENT TO THE MISSION FIELD The Holy Gospel Mark 1:14-20 L: The Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark, chapter 1. C: Glory to you, O Lord. [5]
14After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” 16Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord C: Praise to you, O Christ. We Profess our Faith “The Apostles Creed” I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Service of the Sacrament [Psalm 113] L: From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets the name of the Lord is to be praised. C: Let the name of the Lord be praised both now and forevermore. L: The Lord is exalted over all the nations, his glory is above the heavens. C: He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. L: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen The Words of Institution Private Prayer before Communing Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favor, and further us with your continual help that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you we may glorify your holy name and finally by your mercy obtain eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. The Distribution of the Sacrament [6]
The Canticle "O Savior, Precious Savior" [LSB 527, vs. 1 & 2] O Savior, precious Savior, Whom yet unseen we love; O name of might and favor, All other names above, We worship Thee, we bless Thee, To Thee, O Christ, we sing; We praise Thee and confess Thee, Our holy Lord and King. O bringer of salvation, Who wondrously hast wrought Thyself the revelation Of love beyond our thought, We worship Thee, we bless Thee, To Thee, O Christ, we sing; We praise Thee and confess Thee, Our gracious Lord and King. Distribution Hymn “O Christ, Who Called the Twelve” [LSB 856] O Christ, who called the Twelve To rise and follow You, Forsaking old, familiar ways For ventures bold and new: Grant us to hear Your call To risk security And, bound in heart and will to You, Find perfect liberty. O Christ, who taught the Twelve The truth for ages sealed, Whose words and works awakened faith, The ways of God revealed: Instruct us now, we pray, By Your empow’ring Word. True teacher, be for all who seek Their light, their life, their Lord. O Christ, who led the Twelve Among the desolate And broke as bread of life for all Your love compassionate: Lead us along the ways Where hope has nearly died And help us climb the lonely hills Where love is crucified. O Christ, who sent the Twelve On roads they’d never trod To serve, to suffer, teach, proclaim The nearer reign of God: Send us on ways where faith Transcends timidity, Where love informs and hope sustains Both life and ministry. O Christ, the_apostles’ Lord, The martyrs’ strength and song, The crucified and risen King To whom the saints belong: Though generations pass, Our tribute still we bring, Our hymns a sacrifice of praise, Our lives an offering. Text: © 1993 GIA Publications, Inc Prayer as you go home Almighty God give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness and put upon ourselves the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus came to visit us in great humility, that in the last day, when he shall come again in glory, we may rise to the life immortal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. [7]
