Dear Hernia Friends,
The next Joint Meeting of the European and American Hernia Societies (HERNIA2021)
takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden, where the pre-congress
courses will be held, in May 2021.

The Organizing Committee consists of 12 dedicated Danish and Swedish academic
hernia surgeons, who are committed to launch the first major international hernia
congress after the COVID-19 pandemic. The congress venue is the Bella Center in
Copenhagen, one of the biggest international congress sites in Scandinavia, with
perfect logistics for a successful meeting scientifically as well as socially.

We wish to highlight evidence in hernia surgery under the overall theme “Bridging
evidence and clinical practice”, focusing on “why I do it?” to a larger extent than
“how I do it?”. In up to four parallel sessions during the four-day congress, we aim
for presentations from key opinion leaders as well as rising young stars, favoring
the next generation of hernia specialists and researchers.

Sessions dealing with the same subject areas will be arranged from “basic to com-
plex” and be chaired by pairs of one “older” renowned and one young and eager her-
nia specialist. Presenting a mixture of key-note lectures, invited oral presentations,
pro-et-con presentations and case-based interactive sessions, we aim for enough
time allowing fruitful panel discussions and active participation of the audience.

As HERNIA2021 also offers an option for live streaming parts of the program, we
expect a huge international on-line audience outside Europe and North America.
HERNIA2021 promotes the opportunity for young researchers with the best abstracts
to present their work as oral presentations within thematic sessions or in dedicated
oral presentation sessions.

The congress will offer presentations of edited educative video recordings of surgical
procedures rather than traditional time-consuming live surgery. Furthermore, we
invite industry supported symposia offering ideal logistics in the large auditoriums
of the Bella Center.
